  • Firefly sets high target with the unveiling of latest fleet FIREFLY, Malaysia's first community airline, aims to fly some three million passengers in and out of the Subang Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang this year. FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Eddy Leong said the airline was confident of handling some two million passengers at the SkyPark Terminal in Subang. It handled slightly more than one million passengers there last year. "As for the KLIA airport, we may just start our operation there but with seven new B737-800 aircraft coming in stages this year, I think we can surpass the one million passenger mark there," Leong told reporters after the launch of Firefly's ticketing counter at KLIA's main terminal building in Sepang yesterday. • Janice (don't be so blind to love) Skip Mahoney Mahoney's surname, similar to Leo Gorcey's character in the Bowery Boys, is actually spelled Mahoaney; he dropped the "a" when the group signed with Nashboro Records. They were known as the Casuals until their debut recording on DC International Records appeared with the name Skip Mahoaney & the Casuals on the label, causing a riff between Skip and the other guys. The Casuals emerged on the Washington/Baltimore scene during the same era as the Choice Four, Dynamic Superiors, Frankie & the Spindells, the Whatnauts, Terry Huff & Special Delivery, the Vandals, the Softones, etc. Unlike those groups, the Casuals fame never spread regionally or nationally. Skip grew up in Washington DC, but his parents "moved on up" to Seat Pleasant, Maryland, while he was still attending Cardoza High in the District. He started singing with street corner stars in Washington before the move and returned to Washington every weekend--staying with a sister--to continue his harmonizing. He assembled the first Casuals after transferring to Central High in Maryland, and they took second place in a school talent show. A White band doing R&B covers took first, the two entities merged to do after school and weekend gigs, the only mixed outfit in the area. They drifted apart after graduation leaving Skip to assemble new Casuals from guys' he first sang with on the Districts' streets and alleyways. George Norris, Billy Jones, and Roger Chapman, are known as the original Casuals, though Skip actually sung ...

  • The Orbans - "Like a Liar": SXSW 2011 Showcasing Artist Formed in 2008, The Orbans from Fort Worth, TX have combined a "do it yourself" indie attitude with a very unique style of pop music that is not afraid to show a little twang. That year, the band released a well received debut EP titled Switchblade Waterpistol and began touring regionally in support of the release. With their debut full length album produced by Adam Lasus, The Orbans moved into 2011 with a firm answer for all of their efforts. Recording "When We Were Wild" was an intense experience for The Orbans. The initial attempt to record in the spring of 2009 seemed to be missing something and the recordings were set aside. The band regrouped and contacted Producer Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo, Clem Snide). The band first met Lasus when he helped mix the Switchblade Waterpistol EP in 2008. After discussing the goals and expectations for the record, it was collectively decided to record the album live. They began looking at studios and found the perfect spot in Austin, Tx at Cedar Creek Recording. The large space allowed for the isolation required to have the band play together and record live. Adam and the band were also drawn to the vintage gear housed at Cedar Creek and it didn't hurt that Uncle Tupelo had recorded Anoydyne there in the same manner, with the band all playing at once. From the pre-production days spent at a house around Lake Austin to the playback of the first takes on tape at Cedar Creek, the entire team realized that ...

This video is is one of a collection that resulted from this project. The intent of NAWB and CSW is to share the individual clips with our partners, stakeholders, and communities as we advance a work, learning, and sustainable prosperity agenda. We will also be developing subject ...
