Since 1994, they have been in a declared war "against the Mexican state," though this war has been primarily nonviolent and defensive against military, paramilitary, and corporate incursions on their territory. Their social base is mostly indigenous but they have some supporters in urban areas as well as an international web of support. Their main spokesperson is Subcomandante Marcos (currently aka Delegate Zero in relation to the "Other Campaign"). Unlike other Zapatista spokespeople, Marcos is not an indigenous Mayan. The group takes its name from Emiliano Zapata, the agrarian reformer and commander of the Liberation Army of the South during the Mexican Revolution and sees itself as his ideological heir. In reference to inspirational figures, in nearly all EZLN villages exist murals accompanying images of Zapata, Che Guevara, and Subcomandante Marcos. Their ideology combines libertarian socialism, libertarian municipalism, libertarian Marxism, and indigenous Mayan political thought. They align themselves with the wider anti-globalization, anti-neoliberal social movement and seek indigenous control over their local resources, especially land. • re: Placing Community Support video submitted to Prix Ars Electronic 2010, Category: Digital Communities Richard W. Goldin, Ph.D. Marco A. Larsen Description of Project: Our work utilizes current video and sound technology to reconceptualize community in the social realm and open up new avenues of investigation into the intertwined workings of politics, community and power. This work does not rely on a replicative nominalism mapping existing political and social theories of community onto the virtual but instead places community within the contested spaces of discourse/power traversed by theorists such as Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard. Our contention is that the primary effects of the virtual in terms of community is not located in the singular, bounded dimensions of an internet page or blog but, rather, in the complex, heterogeneous relations fostered within the social folds of seemingly political events. It is the increasing ability of the virtual to construct these momentary social folds which links the virtual to an ongoing investigation of the nature of community. Since the events of 2001, groups have used the internet to organize actions against the war in Iraq. Our mapping of these actions is enabled by digital video and audio devices which allow continuous and unrestricted recording. These recordings display discursive sub-texts which remain hidden by a singular focus on, and recording of, interactions which have been designated as political marches, meetings, etc. The marches ...

  • Truth Matters Interview Interview with Lambert Zuidervaart about the interdisciplinary conference August 18-20, 2010 www.icscanada.edu We live in an age of skepticism about the idea of truth. Contemporary skeptics question the nature and value of truth and the concomitant virtue of truthfulness. Skepticism about truth is not restricted to popular culture. It occurs within the academic world, where deflationists have argued that the idea of truth is not a substantive notion and some poststructuralists have portrayed it as primarily the scene of struggles for power. Such skepticism is surprising, for truth and truthfulness have been central to Western civilization and the academic enterprise. Given both contemporary skepticism and the centrality of truth, we believe it is time to reconceptualize truth and to reclaim truthfulness for the academic enterprise. The conference organizers have undertaken an interdisciplinary philosophical effort to develop a new model of truth. Now we wish to expand the scope of our work by engaging with discussion partners from other schools and from across the disciplines. The Truth Matters conference will be an occasion for international dialogue and debate. The conference is co-sponsored by ICS (Toronto), Calvin College (Grand Rapids), Dordt College (Sioux Center) and the Free University (Amsterdam), and supported by a generous grant from the Priscilla and Stanford Reid Trust.
  • Heidegger and Climate Change "Bush said he's addressing global warming through new technologies. "I think there needs to be time for some of these technologies to kick in, to give them a chance to work," he said." Technology, before it is something we use to alter the physical world around us (to get the world to do what we want), is first expressed as a mode of being-in-the-world. As Heidegger has said, the essence of technology is itself not technological. The essence, instead, is what Heidegger calls enframing. Our tendency to enframe the Being of the world, to conceptualize and organize it, to define and, in effect, conquer it is the basis of our technology. It may become clear now that our primary (and most powerful) technological device is language. This is so because the grammatical structures of our language enframe the world, making it an object, before it even comes before what we call our perception. In other words, built into the structure of our language are certain preconceptual assumptions about the nature of Being that the language-user implicitly assumes whenever they speak. We may comment, now, on the quotation above, taken from a recent New York Times article concerning the prospects of climate change. The material success brought about by the industrial revolution highlighted man's ability to alter and control his environment. But his success has come at a price, as now that the dust has settled and revealed the post-industrial future that looms on the horizon, the tremendous cost ...
