  • Santa Monica - UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital UCLA's Santa Monica Hospital Undergoes Makeover This fall, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital will officially debut its new campus to the community as the multiphase construction project initially launched to repair severe structural damage caused by the 1994 Northridge Earthquake reaches completion. The hospital, which has expanded from two buildings on a single city block to a campus spanning several city blocks, represents the best of an academic medical center combined with a community hospital, says the hospital's chief administrative officer, Posie Carpenter. "We will provide all of the benefits of a worldclass academic medical center in a setting that provides the comfort and convenience of a community hospital," Carpenter notes. The hospital was built in phases while remaining open to the community. The Tower building, which sustained the most damage from the earthquake, was retrofitted, recommissioned and licensed by the state to operate while construction of the campus continued. "This has been a very complex building project," Carpenter says. The main hospital facility includes a series of four new buildings, in addition to the existing Merle Norman Pavilion, organized in a horseshoe layout, with the main entrance on 16th Street. The number of licensed inpatient beds will be reduced from 315 to 266, but most of the beds in the new hospital will be in private rooms, which makes the available capacity similar between the old and new ...

  • Mars Landing 1962 - Alternative 3 For a copy of the entire show in high quality go to: In the late 1970s the UK's Anglia Television ran a weekly science series, Science Report. The final episode of the series was due to have been broadcast on April 1st, and as the series was not due to be recommissioned, the production team decided to produce a spoof edition for April Fool's Day, which was duly written by Chris Miles and David Ambrose but retained the series' format and presenter. Music was supplied by Brian Eno, a portion of his score being released on the 1978 album Music for Films. The episode began by detailing the so-called "brain drain:" a number of mysterious disappearances and deaths of physicists, engineers, astronomers, and others in related fields. Among the strange deaths reported was that of one "Professor Ballantine" of Jodrell Bank. Before his death, Ballantine delivers a videotape to an academic friend, but when viewed on an ordinary videotape machine the only result is radio static. According to the research presented in the episode, it was hypothesized that the missing scientists were involved in a secret American/Soviet plan in outer space, and further suggested that interplanetary space travel had been possible for much longer than was commonly accepted. The episode featured an Apollo astronaut — the fictional "Bob Grodin," played by Shane Rimmer — who claims to have stumbled on a ...
  • Recommissioning of A10 No.6 The oldest operating locomotive in Australia was recommissioned in 1991 after a dedicated restoration by volunteers. This was one of my first ever attempts at using a camcorder, so its a little shaky in places, but hope you will forgive this given the historic content of the video.

  • Return of SteamRanger's F Class 251 The re-commissioning of ex SAR suburban tank locomotive F251 not only marked an end for Steamranger at Dry Creek, but also marked an end for broad gauge steam tours originating out of the suburban area. Built in 1922, F251 served the railways of South Australia until 30th May 1963 when she was retired to an Elizabeth West shopping centre car park. On the 2nd September 1981 the locomotive was moved to Dry Creek depot by road, where it then lay dormant awaiting a miracle to return it to service. Four*** years later on 23rd July 1995, F251 was re-commissioned in front of a large crowd in the Adelaide Railway Yards under Morphett Street bridge. Having been re-commissioned, F251 pushed its train back into platform one and filled its cars with VIP's for her maiden run to Blackwood. Pouring rain didn't have any effect on the loco as she steamed uphill. On its return to Adelaide, she took up duties, operating two trains to different suburban locations each Sunday. I was lucky enough to travel behind her on a history making run - the first steam locomotive to run to Noarlunga centre. By the time that F251 was to be moved to Goolwa, it was found that standardization was complete and the loco was moved by road to Strathalbyn. The centenary cars also eventually being moved by road, and marking the end of an era for broad gauge steam in the suburbs. On its transferral to Goolwa, F251 took up duties as the only operational steam locomotive in the Steamranger fleet after both Rx207 and ...
  • Firecrackers jumprope team at OSU/Michigan basketball game The King's Firecrackers jumprope team perform at halftime of the Ohio State/Michigan womens basketball game, 1/3/10. Easily the best halftime entertainment OSU has. Here's their web site: and their schedule: Apologies for the shaky beginning, I eventually recommissioned my saxamaphone's lyre as a semi-tripod. Any other shaking after that was due to me clapping, which I couldn't help 'cause they were too awesome. Edit: Screw you, Sony. A terrible quality 65-second clip of an 18-year-old song is not reasonable grounds to block my video in Germany. Change your business model or slowly fade away while futilely fighting it.
