  • Pontine Islands - Italy The Pontine Islands are an archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the west coast of Italy. The islands were collectively named after the largest island in the group, Ponza. The other islands in the archipelago are Palmarola, Zannone, and Gavi to the northwest, Ventotene and Santo Stefano to the southeast. These two groups are separed by 22 nautical miles. From Sabaudia-Cape Circeo peninsula to Zannone the distance is 12 nautical miles, while Ventotene faces Gaeta (21 miles). The minimum distance between Santo Stefano and the isle of Ischia is 22 nautical miles. The archipelago is the result of volcanic activity and has been inhabited for thousands of years. Neolithic artifacts and Bronze Age obsidians have been excavated on the islands. The islands were used by the Etruscans who carved the "Blue Grottos". The earliest recorded history of the islands occurs with the Roman victory over the Volsci at 338 BC. According to a local legend, this was once the lost Kingdom of Tyrrhenia which sank with a narrow strip connected to mainland Italy. During the reign of Rome's Caesar Augustus, residential expansion on the islands was encouraged and people spread from Ponza to Ventotene. Rome used the two islands as a retreat and a place to exile politically troubling citizens. Some two thousands years later the islands were used for the same reason by the Fascist regime. The Pontine were abandoned during the Middle Ages due to constant raids by Saracens and pirates. During the 18th ...

  • La del Pinion La del Piñón, a history of New Mexico by Roy E. Howard, Ph.D. Each wave of conquest brought a leader who is long gone, along with men who stayed and became a long term part of New Mexico history by starting families who are still here today. More information: This version of history is a New Mexico love story. In each verse, the soldier or worker quits his job, declares he has found what he came for, and lives happily ever after with the girl of his dreams: the girl he found by the pinion tree. In this ballad, the true treasure of New Mexico is characterized as the people who continue to live here generation after generation. Many stories are missing from this sampling of history. This tradition continues to the current generations, as my father found his bride in New Mexico in 1938, I found my New Mexico gal in 1970, and both my sons married New Mexico women in the 1990s. As I write this history, I am surrounded by a vast pinion forest in the Zuni Mountains of my New Mexico home. This is a love song to my wife and an honor song to all the New Mexico women. The true treasure we seek for is not possession and power, but acceptance and relationships. Take time to get to know the people of New Mexico, and you will discover the reason that so many visitors have stayed. Stories of romance missing from this New Mexico timeline: Sandia People, 25000 BC; Clovis hunters, 10000-9000 BC; Folsom People, 9000-8000 BC; Cochise People, 10000-500 BC ...
  • Mount St Helens_1979-2009_ In mid-March 1980, a series of small earthquakes began shaking the ground at Mt. St. Helens in southern Washington. Over the next two months, the northern flank of the mountain was deformed by a large bulge—a sign that upwelling magma was pushing up on the rock from below. On the morning of May 18, an earthquake caused the entire north flank of the volcano to collapse in a massive avalanche. Relieved of the overlying pressure, the volcano ejected a blast of rocks, ash, gas, and steam that blew down and buried several hundred square miles of forest. This trio of false-color Landsat satellite images is part of a 30-year time series documenting the destruction and recovery at Mt. St. Helens. Vegetation is red, bare rock and volcanic debris are gray, and clear water is dark blue. (In the complete time series, images from 1984 onward are in photo-like natural color.) The 1979 view shows the snow-covered summit of the perfectly shaped stratovolcano, and the mixture of protected forest (darkest red, north of the volcano), agricultural land (lighter reds), and logging clear cuts (patchwork of squares at image right) that surrounded the mountain. The image from September 24, 1980, shows the devastation of the May 18 eruption. The northern flank of the mountain collapsed, producing the largest landslide in recorded history. The avalanche buried 14 miles (23 kilometers) of the North Fork Toutle River with an average of 150 feet (46 meters)—but in places up to 600 feet (180 meters ...
  • Lords of Nature - Trailer Available from: Narrated by Peter Coyote For centuries, humans have feared wolves, cougars and other top predators, driving them to the edge of extinction in our wildlands and prairies. But in recent years, scientists are learning that top predators play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, a critical reminder of the importance of preserving biodiversity. Shot in high definition, LORDS OF NATURE presents the science behind the findings that the great carnivores are revitalizing forces of nature, and introduces us to people learning to live with the beasts they once banished. The film follows biologists Bill Ripple and Bob Beschta, two leading pioneers in the quest to decipher the role of great predators in the web of life. Ripple and Beschta have found that without these predators, ecosystems are seriously degraded, and when returned to places like Yellowstone, they have a positive impact, restoring a lost balance. In Yellowstone, the film shows a chain of life flourishing once again since the return of wolves after a 70 year absence -- stream banks cloaked with willow and re-colonized by beavers and songbirds. Ripple and Beschtas research echoes a mounting body of evidence that reveals predators are essential to maintaining the diversity of life. But these finding have also raised a critical question is it possible to incorporate top predators back into societies that once feared them? To answer that question, LORDS OF NATURE visits with ...
