Unusual Sights: The Life of a Railroader I would like to recount one or two short stories that happened to me during my forty-two year employment as a locomotive engineer with the Southern Pacific Railroad which in later years became the Union Pacific Railroad. One story I would like to recount is that of handling one freight train from Roseville, California to my out of town destination of Dunsmuir. This was during the flood of 1986 after a bridge had completely washed out. This particular bridge, which is located about two miles south of the town of Wheatland over the waterway which is named the Bear River, had been lost due to the high waters and flood conditions that were all about the general area that year. So, traffic for both north and southbound freight trains via Roseville was being redirected to travel via Davis, California and then northwards. I would like to add at this time the name of this particular north-south route is what we railroaders called “the west side line.” Prior to the loss of this particular bridge, one many of the strange sights that I witnessed during the temporary tragedy that was the flood of `86 was that of seeing snakes piled high at one end of a trestle, while at the opposite end of the bridge were many rabbits and birds nestled about each other in an attempt to weather the terrific storms. Both I and my conductor found it odd that during these terrible storms, the many incidents of flood and other distresses, animals and birds that are so often at odds ...
