  • Day 192 (The Flower of the Quern) Fiddle Tune a Day is my ambitious project to post a new fiddle tune on the web every day for the next year, using both youtube and tumblr. Day192: The Flower of the Quern: This beautiful slow air was composed by Scot Skinner. Originally this was a song, published in Gordon Phillips, Elgin (Scotland), whose words were written as a tribute to a young woman, Mary Morrison. Mary, who lived in Forres in the latter half of the 19th century, was described as "the bonniest lass from Inverness to Aberdeen", but was widowed at an early age. She remarried David Flyslop who was the chauffeur to the Earl of Moray, and lived in a lodge at the end of one of the driveways to Darnaway Castle. The music was composed by J. Scott Skinner as a tune for the song, but the melody also became popular as a slow air.

  • Hole 11 - Quern Stone. This straight par 5 which playing slightly downhill and feeling slightly shorter than the yardage suggests. The centre of the fairway is your desired position from the tee as traps lie in wait to the left and right for any wayward driver. For the more powerful this is your chance to hit the green in two to set up a possible eagle. The approach to the green should be treated with caution as the green itself is long and narrow. Any shots too far left will kick even further left due to the steep slope and any shot missing right will be swallowed up by two of the most cavernoust bunkers on the course.

  • mill stone rotary quern this is a short video of a quern stone that i picked up at a yard sale .... it is shaped from solid granite .. and i would estimate its age at somewhere round the 1840s.. at about that time it was illegal to own one!-- you were expected to buy your flour from the company mill ,,(thirlage ) and company men would break peoples querns to effect the monopoly ... it is hard to find any left in countrys like scotland just on a green organic note fresh milled grain contains the wheat germ ... whereas factory produced flour the wheat germ , part is removed (the most healthy part ).. because it becomes rancid after 2 or three days ... therefore fresh milled grain is far more healthy ps you woudnt want a mill stone round your neck
