- Virtual Kasparov (GBA) - Europe Run, Part 1 of 2 This is my first attempt at a run of Europe in the Game Boy Advance game "Virtual Kasparov". This is the first part of a 2-part video. Here's a rundown of the game details: Game #1 ------------ My opponent plays an offbeat defense that, if I remember correctly, is called the "Elephant Gambit". Since I don't remember the main line too well, I went for the most natural response of pinning the gambit pawn. Black should have retaken the pawn with the Queen but, after retaking with the Knight, I won a piece through the pin. A quick transition to a Queen-less middlegame made this an exercise in converting the win. Game #2 ------------ A failed irregular defense with an early blunder of a Queen, on my opponent's part, makes this a boring game. The only highlight was the Knight sacrifice on c6, which lead to interesting play. Be sure to check out Part 2!
- T McD's Bees bees - swarmed after honey harvest Aug. 22nd I was checking the hives and noticed that there was no honey above the queen excluder. As I was checking the brood boxes I noticed that there were only drone cells left so it was suggested to take some of the drones out to see if they were infested with varroa mites; they were not so I would conclude that shortly after I harvested the honey on Aug. 5th the hive swarmed. Now this hive is too small to live through the MN winter, they would starve, so I salvaged some of the honey frames and put them into other hives. For an experiment I put all of the bees into one brood box and took a frame with brood and eggs from a strong hive and put it in the center of that box to see if they would make another queen. I spelled Varroa mite wrong in the video sorry about that but I don't have time to change it now.

- Bees emerging from nuc box 2 The second of three nuc boxes my bee buddy and I prepared yesterday for a local school and a couple of new beekeepers. A frame of brood and a frame of stores from a healthy colony are placed in a five frame nuc box, along with a few bees from the original colony. The bees realise they are queenless and raise their own queen from the brood frame. In about 21 days they should have a laying queen. Once their numbers have built up they can be transferred into a full size hive. This morning, we opened up the entrances and placed grass in front so the bees have to push their way through. This slows down their first exit and encourages them to "scan" the front of the nuc box so they know where to come back to. Filmed in HD on iPhone 4.
- BEEKEEPING: Field Trip #10, Queenless Hive. In this video, I'm checking to see if this hive made a new queen, it doesn't appear that it did. I actually added 7 more frames of brood to the brood chamber with a combination of newly laid fertile eggs & heaps of sealed brood. This will enable the hive to make a new queen (if needed)& also strengthen the hive plus prevent the hives the brood came from swarming....That's my strategy.

The intent was to build up the strong hive so we could resplit the hive back into two in the next month or so as we raise a new queen - a future vlog. Problem is we now have a huge heavy hive with 4 brood boxes so we need to reduce the hive to make it manageable. Bees are predictable as to where they raise their young so it is easy to see what boxes to remove. Watch my vlog to find out how to do it.

- Lasius flavus queen affiliation - part 1 The affiliation of a Lasius flavus queen by a queenless group of workers. The experiment was prepared on July 23rd, when I collected the queen during nuptial flight and on August 2nd, when I collected a bunch of workers and brood from a Lasius flavus nest in nature. The nest and the location of collection of the queen are separated by app. 15 km. Will the queenless bunch of workers adopt the new queen? The plan for the experiment was like this: First, introduce dead workers to the test tube with the queen. Then, add a living worker, then another, and so on. The idea: The smell of the dead workers may be enough for the queenless colony to accept the new queen. I also read, that queenless colonies of Lasis flavus affilitate new queens under some conditions, so I was optimistic for the outcome. Still I was carefully watching. This video shows the first critical phase in the affilitation experiment: the first living worker is inserted into the test tube with the queen. Will she attack? Or accept? As you can see, she is quite nervous in the beginning - the smell doesn't seem to be too familiar to her. She runs away the first two times when she touches the queen with her antennas. After that, she gets more calm! See the next video for the continuation!

- How to play nice with Bees A central Nebraskas beekeeper continues to explain his operation and talks about the behavior and psycholgy of bees and constructing a home for them which best meets their needs. Mike asked that we include a couple of minor, informational corrections. He writes: "On How to Play Nice with Bees, I was inaccurate as to how soon the hive detects that it is queenless. Reading in Von Frisch, it is a matter of about a half hour for the bees to detect the drop in queen substance, and in a couple of hours they can be preparing a young larva to be queen. I also made some terminology mistakes. The eggs hatch in three days, the larvae grow and develop, pupate, then emerge, called eclosion in the entomology world. The whole process for a queen is 15 days, the workers 21, the drones 24."
- T McD's Bees Sept 6th combining hives with the newspaper method Sept. 6th I combined the red hive which had been queenless and so a few weeks ago or so I put a frame of brood and eggs into the hive, they made a queen and there was a lot of brood in the hive now. It was too small of a hive to winter over so I put all the bees in the red hive and combined them onto the yellow hive with the newspaper. In a few days they will have chewed the paper so they can slowly mix the two hives together. I'll be harvesting the honey in a few days and all the hives will have 3 deep for the winter.

- Checking Warnholz Mini Nuc's (Nucleus) - Queen Rearing Beekeeping Techniques A video showing a beekeeper checking a mini nucleus (nuc) for a fertilized honeybee queen. You put sugar syrup in one end of the nuc and a little bit of wax on each wood strip. Then you put a cupful of bees in the hive and seal them in for 48 hours in the dark. Release them early in the morning. They will build up the wax comb inside and start collecting stores of nectar & pollen. Put a sealed queen cell in the next day, leave and do not touch for a week. Check after that time to see if the queen has emerged and possibly laying. If not leave and check again after another five days. Once you see eggs you know she has been mated. The idea of a mini nuc is to breed queens without using large numbers of bees from the main colony. You can remove the queen and introduce her into another queenless hive and reunite the remaining bees with another hive or continue the process. - Queenless Hive This is a queenless hive--a hive that is about to die. Notice the dissonant sound. You can hear several different bees buzzing differently--not bees buzzing as a chorus creating a unified sound. There's no queen pheromone to hold them together, no eggs and larvae to go along with their age defined duties.
