  • The Brothers Quay. The Roots of Filmmaking. 2009. 1/7 www.egs.edu The Brothers Quay discussing the roots of filmmaking and presenting a history of animated films from middle Europe at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. They spoke of their own germination as filmmakers, and their interactions with the magnificent works of Jan Svankmajer, Walerian Borowcyk, Alenxander Alexieff, as well as with the writings of Sigmund Freud, Ernst Jentsch, and ETA Hoffman. The Quay Brothers lectured about the interactions between Europe and Hollywood, examining film clips of Buster Keaton and Fred Astaire. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland. 2009 Quay Brothers The Brothers Quay are two of the most remarkable film makers of our time. Working in collaboration since at least 1969 when they first moved to London from the United States, their stop-action films have introduced a generation of viewers to a lyrical darkness not often associated with animation. Influenced heavily by Middle European writers and artists—especially Bruno Schultz, on whose story Street of Crocodiles is based, as well as the painter Max Ernst and the puppeteer and filomaker Jan Svankmajer—their work reflects the dark psychology resulting from a century of industrial warfare, surrealist art and dialectical politics. As a piece of unsurpassed film-making, Street of Crocodiles evokes pre-war Poland, provincial and mystical, connected to ...
  • Weymouth Harbour Branch a film by Fred Ivey On December 29th 1994 33109 Capt. Bill Smith RN took the Ocean Liner Express along the Weymouth Quay line much to the surprise of motorists, especially those who had their cars moved and even towed away. In January 2009 it was reported that Weymouth and Portland Borough Council wanted the tramway removed. The following month the council agreed to purchase the line from Network Rail for £50000, prior to a final decision on its future. Supporters of public transport want to make use of the tramway to carry spectators to the seafront for the 2012 Olympic sailing events held in Weymouth. However, the council has stated that any decision on the future of the line depends on the amount of funding available, which in view of the current economic climate is unlikely to materise before 2012. • 2006 Brothers Quay Interview : PART 2 Stephen and Timothy Quay (born 17 June 1947 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, United States), are American identical twin brothers better known as the Brothers Quay or Quay Brothers. They are influential stop-motion animators. They reside and work in England where they moved in the late 1960s (after studying illustration in Philadelphia) to study at the Royal College of Art[1] There, they made their first short films, which no longer exist after the only print was irreparably damaged.[citation needed] They spent some time in the Netherlands in the 1970s and then returned to England where they teamed up with another Royal College student, Keith Griffiths, who produced all of their films. The trio formed Koninck Studios in 1980, which is currently based in Southwark, south London. The Quays' works (1979-present) show a wide range of often esoteric influences, starting with the Polish animators Walerian Borowczyk and Jan Lenica and continuing with the writers Franz Kafka, Bruno Schulz, Robert Walser and Michel de Ghelderode, puppeteers Wladyslaw Starewicz and Richard Teschner and composers Leoš Janáček, Zdeněk Liška and Leszek Jankowski, the last of whom has created many original scores for their work. Czech animator Jan Švankmajer, for whom they named one of their films (The Cabinet of Jan Švankmajer), is also frequently cited as a major influence, but they actually discovered his work relatively late, in 1983, by which time their characteristic style and preoccupations had been ...
  • Kilmore Quay, County Wexford KILMORE QUAY is an attractive fishing village famous for its traditional whitewashed and thatched cottages. Its harbour is a safe haven for working fishing boats and pleasure craft and in summer is the point of departure for daytrippers to Great Saltee Island bird sanctuary nearby. This part of the Wexford coast is known as the graveyard of a thousand ships and appropriately a memorial garden to those lost to the unforgiving sea was dedicated in 2001. It names all those lost along this coast and on nearby lakes and rivers, the Wexford sailors lost on all the worlds oceans, sailors tor***ed during the First World War, the crew and passengers of Aer Lingus Flight 712 which was lost near Tuskar Rock Lighthouse in 1968 and also the Air Corps helicopter crew killed during a search and rescue operation in County Waterford in 1999. Sadly additional names have been placed on the memorial due to local tragedies since its dedication. Also featured in the video is The Guillemot , a retired Lightship which served as a Maritime Museum for many years on the quays at Wexford town. It was moved to Kilmore Quay in the late 1980s and it still serves as a museum. During a storm in January 1990 (which wrecked the old harbour), The Guillemot broke from her new moorings and as a consequence is now set in concrete! • Sydney Skies | Circular Quay This is the third entry of the Sydney Skies Series. The song heard is called Surfin, and it is from an album called Hello Waveforms, which from the artist named William Orbit. Find out more about his work at Seen in this movie are many time-lapse recordings of both the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Both of these prominent landmarks are situated on the grounds of Sydney City's ultra bustling transportation hub, Circular Quay. Circular Quay serves as an important public transit interchange for the city's bus lines, ferry routes, and passenger train network. There are also a host of hotels, restaurants, and shops on the premisses as well. Moreover, on a busy day you can also expect to find one or two street performers there too. Furthermore, Circular Quay is also the home of both the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art and the City of Sydney Library. As a rail station Circular Quay is distinct because it is the only station on the City Circle Line that is above ground. As a ferry station it houses five commuter ferry wharfs, and is the end point all public ferry routes in Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River. Historically, Circular Quay was called "Semi-Circular Quay", this because the original curvature of the bay was of approximate circular shape. The common name has now been reduced in length out of amenity, but it's also true that the quay is now rectangular because the entire perimeter is now etched man made in brick and concrete ...
