These termites or white ants as they are commonly known were found in a small mound nest in the garden of a home in suburban Sydney.   • Natural Insecticide Pyrethroids Word "Natural" is very popular today. Every advertisement tries to use it to attract consumers. The average consumer misguided by wording, thinking that it is safe, starts using the insecticides inaccurately as in the example of Amber Nickol published in "'Safe' Insecticides Now First in Poisoning" article by MB Pell and Jim Morris. The purpose of this project to stop the careless profit makers and to open the eyes of the average consumers showing that "natural" does not nessecerally means safe or harmless. Dose makes the poison even in case of the safest household products. Pyrethroids are a group of synthesized insecticides similar to the natural pesticide pyrethrum, which is produced by chrysanthemum flowers. There is no doubt that pyrethroids are safer than the organophosphate insecticides, but they are not "natural" as media advertises it everywhere and has its own health risks. Modified pyrethroids have the longer half-life compared to the naturally produced pyrethrins and tend to accumulate in the body leading to different health problems. Our task was to search the information about so-called "natural" household insecticides, to interview someone who does the research with pyrethroids in the department of biochemistry and to write the legislative bill including all pros and cons of the topic.

  • Cat Bifenthrin (Pyrethroid) poisoning After our house was treated for White Tail Spiders, our cat started being too hyperactive with ears twitching. We found out that it was caused by insecticide poisoning. The chemical used was Bifenthrin. It belongs to a group called Pyrethroid. The chemical attacks nervous system. It is highly toxic and carcinogenic and is forbiden in European Union, but not in Australia. I took the cat to a Vet, but there was nothing they could do. The simptoms disappeared after a few days. So, do not panic. However, I am not aware of any long term consequences. A guy who did spraying told us that the cat would not be affected by the spraying. So, people, please avoid this chemical and remove your pets if treating house for insects.

Carpenter bees look very similar to bumble bees. With your bumble bees, they have more yellow on their abdomen. Now, however, the carpenter bee, one way youre definitely going to know it is a carpenter bee is that it has a very dark, shiny, black abdomen on the back section. The male, however, has a white head, so you can definitely tell which is male and which is female. The good news is that carpenter bees are not very aggressive. The male doesnt even have a stinger. He is very territorial however and he may even come up and buzz you. But you will definitely see the white on his face and you will know its a male and not to fear. The female however, she does have a stinger, but since they are solitary insects, they are not social like honey bees.
