  • How the Body Works : Movement and the Cerebellum Movement and the Cerebellum The cerebellum, part of the hindbrain, is concerned with the regulation of coordination and balance. It is an oval-shaped structure with a central furrow, which is flanked on either side by a bulbous lobe. The furrow is called the vermis and the expanded lobes the hemispheres. The surface is covered with folds, or folia. In the illustration presented, a section through a folium has been drawn out and cut through to show its internal structure. The outer region of the cerebellum is known as the cortex, or gray matter. It contains two distinct layers of nerve cells, the molecular layer-containing stellate and basket cells, which process information within the cortex, and the granular layer-containing small granule cells and Golgi cells, which sift incoming information. The layers are separated from each other by a layer of purknje cells, which carry information concerning body movement out of the cerebellum. Beneath the cortex lies the white matter, which is composed of nerve fibers, mossy fibers and climbing fibers that pass in and out of the cerebellum. The Mossy fibers are a major route for information entering the cerebellum, while the climbing fibers carry information to the cells in the molecular layer of the cerebellar cortex. The cerebellum lies below the occipital lobes of the brain's cerebral hemispheres.

  • Purkinje This was for my film module, obviously not amazing but still. Too much stuff going on really, little bits kept adding along the way. Started off looking at Purkinje cells and saw a pretty strong visual link between them and that of plant roots... so I decided to grow myself a brain. Which was fun. And annoying. Played around with a track from the film 'All About Lily Chou Chou' and overlayed it with two tracks of white noise which osculate, and travel between ears at different rates, which the track also does... minimalistic music being of a fair amount of inspiration of course :) best listened to with headphones, kept it all in black and white purposefully - when I was watching it I felt a great sense of synaesthesia (sensing colour through means other than sight) due to the audio... and... well, yeah, that's about it :) still very new to film and sonic arts but I'll get there :)

  • Cerebellar abiotrophy Cerebellar abiotrophy is a genetic recessive disease in Arabian horses. It is also called Cerebellar cortical abiotrophy, cerebellar hypoplasia, or cerebellar ataxia. It is characterized by head tremors, lack of coordination and inability to gauge distance. Most are hyperreactive and startle easily. Many affected horses also move with an odd head-bobbing motion and have exaggerated leg movements. In short, horses with this condition do not have a sense of depth perception or of spatial relationships. They literally don't know where they are. They can see and learn, so they begin to use other senses to compensate. This filly has "memorized" where things are located, but when excited, she still miscalculates (as seen in the video where she almost collides with a fence) Its cause is the atrophy of purkinje cells in the cerebellum, beginning at or shortly after the birth of the horse. Why the gene triggers this condition is not known. This filly was two years old at the time the video was taken. She has learned to compensate somewhat for her condition, but many foals are so severly affected that they are euthanized before they are a year old. However, even though she has learned to avoid hurting herself most of the time, she will never be safe to ride. There is no cure for this condition. Little can be done to treat it, other than to keep the horse in a calm environment where they experience very little change. The only hope is for researchers to develop a DNA carrier test to ...
  • The Mysteries of Guadalupe. The ayate fibers used by the Aztecs at that time deteriorated after 20 years. Richard Kuhn (1900--1967), a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, stated in his report of the tilma that it had not been painted with natural, animal, or mineral colorings. THE MYSTERY OF HER EYES. In January 2001, Dr. Jose Aste Tonsmann, now with the Mexican Center of Guadalupan Studies, revealed at a conference at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome that advances in digital photography now revealed that the images in the Virgin's eyes were those assembled with Bishop Juan de Zumarraga, when Juan Diego first unfurled his tilma and displayed the miraculous image. By magnifying the iris of the Virgin's eyes 2500 times and, through mathematical and optical procedures, Aste Tonsmann feels that he is able to identify all the people imprinted in the eyes. In other words, the Virgin's eyes bear a kind of instant photograph of what occurred the moment the image was unveiled before the bishop. On March 27, 1956, Dr. Javier Torroella Bueno, a prestigious ophthalmologist, certified the presence of the triple reflection (Samson-Purkinje effect) characteristic of all live human eyes and stated that the resulting images of the bearded man were located precisely where they should be according to such an effect. Bueno also pointed out that the distortion of the images agreed with the normal curvature of the cornea. In that same year, another experienced ophthalmologist, Dr. Rafael Torrija Lavoignet ...
  • Structure Of Neuron Check us out at Structural classification Most neurons can be anatomically characterized as: •Unipolar or pseudounipolar: dendrite and axon emerging from same process. •Bipolar: axon and single dendrite on opposite ends of the soma. •Multipolar: more than two dendrites: oGolgi I: neurons with long-projecting axonal processes; examples are pyramidal cells, Purkinje cells, and anterior horn cells. oGolgi II: neurons whose axonal process projects locally; the best example is the granule cell. Furthermore, some unique neuronal types can be identified according to their location in the nervous system and distinct shape. Some examples are: •Basket cells, interneurons that form a dense plexus of terminals around the soma of target cells, found in the cortex and cerebellum. •Betz cells, large motor neurons. •Medium spiny neurons, most neurons in the corpus striatum. •Purkinje cells, huge neurons in the cerebellum, a type of Golgi I multipolar neuron. •Pyramidal cells, neurons with triangular soma, a type of Golgi I. •Renshaw cells, neurons with both ends linked to alpha motor neurons. •Granule cells, a type of Golgi II neuron. •anterior horn cells, motoneurons located in the spinal cord.

  • 2nd Degree AV Block Type I, Mobitz I, Wenckebach PR Interval lengthens progressively and drops a QRS. It is caused by conduction delay in the AV node in 70% of patients and by conduction delay in the His-Purkinje system in the remaining 30%. The presence of a narrow QRS complex suggests the site of the delay is more likely to be in the AV node. However, a wide QRS complex may be observed with either AV nodal or infranodal conduction delay. Can occur in individuals with high vagal tone, such as athletes or young children, patients with structural heart disease (eg, tetralogy of Fallot), valvular surgery (especially mitral valve), MI (especially inferior wall), and drug induced (including Beta-blockers, Calcium channel blockers, Amiodarone, Digoxin, and possibly Pentamidine). It can also be seen if patients with Lyme Disease.
