  • Pumice Desert The pumice deposits you are now standing on are the product of Mt. Mazama, an explosive volcano that collapsed to form the Crater Lake caldera. Mazama stood about 6 miles (9.7km) south of here (to your left). About 7700 years ago Mt. Mazama erupted torrents of seething, red-hot pumice and other volcanic rocks. These glowing avalanches raced down the slopes and flooded the valley that lay here with deposits over 100 feet (30m) deep. Even after thousands of years, few trees have become established on the Pumice Desert. There is ample water under the surface, but deficiencies in the soil limit plant growth. Many more years will pass before the surrounding logdepole pines transform the desert to a forest. Pumice Desert is composed chiefly of pumice and scoria ejected by Mt. Mazama. Pumice is light-colored, porous, and extremely lightiweight. Scoria is often reddish, and noticeably darker and heavier.

  • PUMICE DESERT AT CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK OREGON OR MAZAMA A VIEW OF THE LAKE NATIONAL PARK OREGON. The Pumice Desert is a flat, open area that conspicuously contrasts with the surrounding forest of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). A wedge-shaped opening about 5-1/2 square miles in size, the Pumice Desert is covered with material ejected from ancient Mount Mazama. Gaseous materials filled the valleys and depressions surrounding the flanks of the mountain. The depths of deposits covering the Pumice Desert may be some 200 feet thick. Although it appears flat, small washes are scattered throughout. The two benchmarks probably represent the highest and lowest elevations: 6010 and 5962 feet, respectively. Why has it remained virtually treeless? That was the question posed to me by park staff who suggested that it would be a good project for my masters' thesis. I therefore initiated an ecological study of the Pumice Desert's vegetation in 1965. Nine strip plots or transects were marked for future observation. A larger 100-acre plot for tabulating the number of lodgepole pine was also established.

  • volcanic pumice mass adrift off New Zealand (VIDEO, PHOTOS)--August 10, 2012 A gigantic raft of volcanic pumice pebbles has been spotted floating off the coast of New Zealand. The brilliant white rock mass is made of thousands of golf-ball-sized stones, believed to have been belched forth from an underwater volcano. Tim Oscar, a lieutenant with the New Zealand navy who was one of the first to set eyes on the volcanic phenomenon said it was the "weirdest thing" he had seen in 18 years at sea. HMNZS Canterbury was the first to discover the pebbly mass 85 nautical miles south-west of Raoul Island on Thursday night. The ship's lookout reported a strange shadow on the ocean's surface and called for the ship's spotlight to be trained in the area. It illuminated a brilliant white sheet that stretched as far as the eye could see. "It looked exactly like the edge of an ice shelf," said Oscar. The nautical wonder measures 250 nautical miles in length and 30 nautical miles wide is roughly the size of Belgium. HMNZS Canterbury is currently ferrying scientists to the roiling raft to carry out tests on the rocks to ascertain which volcano they were expelled from. Despite the raft's enormous size, New Zealand officials have assured that it poses no threat to ships in the area. satellite image of the floating pumice earthobservatory.nasa.gov Mt. • Formica fusca Duo with Larvae in New Pumice Nest August 21st, 2009 -Moving the Formica fusca Duo into New Pumice Nest I found another pumice stone, this time one shaped like a foot LOL, so I couldn't help but create another pumice nest. I used the unique shape of the pumice stone to create one that would house and distribute water well. I truly wanted to play with the design with this nest so I tried a few new things. First, I carved the chambers deeper into the pumice stone. This was a smaller stone so I resolved to create more depth/space for the ants that would be moving into the nest. Second, I tried something really neat with the water reservoir. Not only did I make the water reservoir deeper (hence holding more water), but I also carved a thin line which lead upwards to the floor of one of the chambers. Through capillary action the water would travel upwards and come to the surface to create a sort of tiny line of water for the ants to drink. Totally experimental once again, but worked wonderfully! Third, because the chambers were carved deeper, I knew visibility might be a challenge due to darkness, so I resolved to install a skylight in the deepest chamber using clear silicon. Light now enters the chamber from the top without any ants being able to escape. Last night it took me a good hour to decide which of my test tube ants I wanted to move. I decided to move the Formica fusca duo (the former quad... I have one more formica fusca duo in a test tube, as well) because their water had almost dried out. The move ...

  • 2012-08-10 - NZ HERALD - OUR NEW ISLAND? PUMICE FLOAT STUNS NAVY A mass of small volcanic rocks nearly the size of Belgium has been discovered floating off the coast. The stretch of golf-ball-size pumice rocks was first spotted this week by a New Zealand air force plane about 1000 kilometres northwest of Auckland. The rocks stretch for about 26000 square kilometres. A navy ship took scientists to the rocks Thursday night. Naval Lt. Tim Oscar says the rocks appeared a brilliant white under a spotlight, like a giant ice shelf. He says it's the "weirdest thing'' he's seen in 18 years at sea. "The rock looked to be sitting two feet above the surface of the waves, and lit up a brilliant white colour in the spotlight. It looked exactly like the edge of an ice shelf," he said. Lt. Oscar said he had been briefed by GNS Volcanologist Helen Bostock the previous day when the ship first encountered an area of pumice from an undersea volcano. "I knew the pumice was lightweight and posed no danger to the ship. None the less it was quite daunting to be moving toward it at 14 knots. It took about 3 - 4 minutes to travel through the raft of pumice and as predicted there was no damage. As we moved through the raft of pumice we used the spotlights to try and find the edge - but it extended as far as we could see." Scientists say the rocks likely spewed up in an eruption by an underwater volcano. They don't believe the eruption is connected to the onshore ash eruption this week of another volcano, Mount Tongariro. Officials say the small rocks pose no ...

  • Max and the Pumice stone. This film features our dog Max. I have a pumice stone from Lake Taupo (New Zealand) that I scrub my feet with. If you dont know what pumice is, its a volcanic rock similar to a sponge - many small air compartments make the rock buoyant. Max gained a fascination with the stone - possibly because it floats - and did nothing but try to get it out of the bathroom. A few times he fell into the bath, but I didnt get those times on camera unfortunately. Once he fell in with me in the bath at the time - dog hair all over me. This film features my wife and I playing with our dog Max. Just another pet moment - excuse the "gay" laughter - I had no idea I laughed that effeminately. I havent laughed since I saw this video, just to be sure I dont do it again. ***Disclaimer*** "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the US Copyright Law, allowance is made for "fair use" Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. • Density Demo: Pumice Pumice rock, also known as volcanic bomb, is the only rock that can float on water, because it has a low enough density. When the magma that forms pumice rock erupts it does so violently which causes it to fly up high, cool quickly, and have a lot of gas dissolve in it and escape again. This results in a rock that is very porous and so it has a lot of empty space in its volume which causes it to have a low enough density to float on water.
