  • THE ROOM a gestalt musical monologue PART 2 (OF 3) part 2 (of 3) of "THE ROOM": A GESTALT MONOLOGUE BASED ON CHAGALL'S "THE BIRTHDAY". see the commentary: "BACON, HAMANN & NACHMAN" at my website, . in spring 1991 a young man i used to know (who surprisingly has the same name that i have) improvised this monologue while living in a small rented room in brooklyn, new york. the original tape included music which he improvised simultaneously with the text. that tape with the original music is lost, but fortunately the text which i typed up based on that tape is still here in 2012, 21 years later in israel. so we have, first of all, the interesting situation of a stodgy 70 year old israeli recreating the work of a lusty 50 year old new yorker. during those 20 years the stodgy 70 year old has written loads of essays about the same process that the lusty 50 year old was probing rather naively. and so at the risk of making a mountain out of a mole hill i am referring you to an essay i wrote recently about section 4 of nachman of breslav's "collected essays" ("likutei moharan"), entitled: "bacon, hamann & nachman". if the video is itself borders on the limits of acceptable free expression on the net - even for secular folk - likewise this essay is sure to raise a few dozen red flags among the faithful of the breslaver sect. how dare i compare their beloved nachman to the likes of gestalt therapists, renaissance scientists and christian theologians! my justification is that for those who wish to get beyond the ...

  • 4. Fiddling while Rome Burns? - Learning in War-Time First preached in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford, on 22 December 1939, two months after the start of World War II. A University is a society for the pursuit of learning. As students, you will be expected to make yourselves, or to start making yourselves, in to what the Middle Ages called clerks: into philosophers, scientists, scholars, critics, or historians. And at first sight this seems to be an odd thing to do during a great war. What is the use of beginning a task which we have so little chance of finishing? Or, even if we ourselves should happen not to be interrupted by death or military service, why should we - indeed how can we - continue to take an interest in these placid occupations when the lives of our friends and the liberties of Europe are in the balance? Is it not like fiddling while Rome burns? Now it seems to me that we shall not be able to answer these questions until we have put them by the side of certain other questions which every Christian ought to have asked himself in peacetime. I spoke just now of fiddling while Rome burns. But to a Christian the true tragedy of Nero must be not that he fiddles while the city was on fire but that he fiddles on the brink of hell. You must forgive me for the crude monosyllable. I know that many wiser and better Christians than I in these days do not like to mention heaven and hell even in a pulpit. I know, too, that nearly all the references to this subject in the New Testament come from a single source ...

  • Tim Crouch - I, Malvolio Described as 'one of the smartest artists making theatre in Britain now' by Kulturflash, Tim Crouch made his debut at the Edinburgh Showcase in 2003 with his solo show An Arm. Since then he has gone on to make the award-winning productions An Oak Tree and England -- and perhaps his most radical work to date, The Author. He has rightfully established a reputation as one of the UK's most progressive and thought provoking writer/performers and has toured extensively in the UK and internationally. Crouch returns to Edinburgh with I, Malvolio, the fourth in a series of solo Shakespeare plays for young audiences commissioned by Brighton Festival. The series started in 2003 with I, Caliban, a re-telling of The Tempest, followed by I, Peaseblossom and I, Banquo. In I, Malvolio, Crouch re-imagines Twelfth Night through the eyes of one of Shakespeare's most misunderstood characters. I, Malvolio is a charged, hilarious and often unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience, a man 'notoriously abused'. A story of prudery and practical jokes, Malvolio draws you into the madness of Shakespeare's classic comedy and makes it his own. Written and performed by Tim Crouch, this one-man show is a tour de force. The writing is razor sharp and the fresh take on the Shakespeare theme will appeal to young people and hardened Shakespeare devotees alike. It is co-commissioned by the Brighton Festival and Singapore Arts Festival (2010). 'A by turns hysterical and harrowing study ...

  • Gore Vidal Dies aged 86 First Hitch now Gore Vidal, irreplaceable losses. Gore Vidal, the author, playwright, politician and commentator whose novels, essays, plays and opinions were stamped by his immodest wit and unconventional wisdom, died Tuesday, his nephew said Tuesday. Vidal died at his home in the Hollywood Hills at about 6:45 pm of complications from pneumonia, Burr Steers said. Vidal had been living alone in the home and had been sick for 'quite a while,' he said. Along with such contemporaries as Norman Mailer and Truman Capote, Vidal was among the last generation of literary writers who were also genuine celebrities - fixtures on talk shows and in gossip columns, personalities of such size and appeal that even those who hadn't read their books knew who they were. His works included hundreds of essays; the best-selling novels 'Lincoln' and 'Myra Breckenridge'; the ground-breaking 'The City and the Pillar,' among the first novels about openly gay characters; and the Tony-nominated play 'The Best Man,' revived on Broadway in 2012. Tall and distinguished looking, with a haughty baritone not unlike that of his conservative arch-enemy William F. Buckley, Vidal appeared cold and cynical on the surface. But he bore a melancholy regard for lost worlds, for the primacy of the written word, for 'the ancient American sense that whatever is wrong with human society can be put right by human action.' Vidal was uncomfortable with the literary and political establishment, and the feeling was mutual ...
  • Mario, Mario, Mario... Qual occhio al mondo Dorothy Kirsten as Tosca Daniele Barioni as Cavaradossi from Tosca by Puccini, libretto by Giacosa and Illica Edizioni Ricordi One of the most beautiful duets in opera sung by two rare, but gorgeous, voices. Barioni is 26 at date of recording, and had already made his Met debut! He wasn't the subtlest singer, but that voice, my God. And he's so passionate. He's got that warm Italian sun in his singing. Metropolitan Opera Record Club, 1956 Tosca, is about love that flourishes in one sense, but has gone terribly wrong in another. Puccini gives us three different characterizations of how love can go wrong in each of the three lead roles, Tosca, Scarpia, and Cavaradossi. Tosca loves quite deeply, but is proud and jealous: her love has turned into a possession, rather than a passion. Scarpia is perhaps the most obviously twisted portrait of love, but certainly not a simple one. While he may be a vile monster who lusts after any pretty thing that catches his eye, he at least knows what he is. He has no delusion of innocence as does Tosca: he states quite clearly that when he wants something he takes it. The cavalier Cavaradossi is perhaps the most innocent seeming character of the three: he endures torture to save his friend, he is faithful to Tosca, and he is a liberal fighting for freedom from tyrants like Scarpia. However, when he has lost everything, he gives away the game: his aria E lucevan le stelle is basically a memory of a ***ual encounter with Tosca. That's what goes ...

XIX se denominó "Poetas malditos" a los decadentistas como Verlain, Rimbaud o Baudelaire por ser enemigos públicos de las buenas costumbres. • The World Is Turned Upside Down "The World Is Turned Upside Down" performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band on the album "Hang Up Sorrow and Care" (Park Records, 1995, posted with permission). In the 17th century, Cromwell and the Puritans seized power in England. Offended by singing and dancing and drinking, they banned the celebration of Christmas for years in Britain and its colonies. Something of a folk music scholar, Maddy Prior unearthed this historic song to share with us. It is intriguing to read Puritan literature referring to Christmas as "humbug" and then to see Scrooge, two centuries later, observing conventional Puritan prudery toward Christmas while neglecting all its charity.

  • Average American Trans***ual Girl People think because I'm a trans***ual woman, they know all about me. They'd be wrong. I'm a software engineer, an honorably discharged veteran, a published writer and a successful woman, so you might not guess I began life in a male body. You might also wrongly guess a trans***ual woman like me doesn't believe in God. Play this video to learn what else you might not know. Please note I do not purport to speak for any trans***ual women other than myself. ------ To those few who criticize my outfit, I'm not ashamed of my body so I'll wear what I like. Go sell your prudery (or your envy) elsewhere; I'm not interested. Instead of lecturing me about Christians, how about reminding your bretheren about Jesus' message of LOVE? ------ Everybody: PLEASE DON'T reply to the haters in these comments. Most importantly, I'm trying to keep this video as PG-13 as possible, including the comments, so: ANY COMMENTS WITH PROFANITY, EVEN SUPPORTIVE ONES, WILL BE DELETED.
