  • AC Propulsion: Making Gas Cars Electric The talented Kristen Reeves produced this wonderful video segment on AC Propulsion and their world class electric vehicle drive technology. For the past 3 years AC Propulsion has been converting gasoline Scion xBs to 100% electric drive with their phenomenal AC150gen2 electric drive system. In her video, Kristen interviews AC Propulsion President & CEO Tom Gage, and legendary actor/director and longtime EV enthusiast Tom Hanks. Mr. Hanks purchased the very first consumer eBox back in 2006 and uses it as his primary vehicle for all SoCal commuting. Kristen writes: Imagine taking the car you drive now, and never having to stop at a gas station ever again. AC Propulsion, has been converting gas-fueled cars to electric for two decades. This is a piece profiling AC Propulsions car, the eBox, with a special interview with Tom Hanks who owns one of these cars. Is this the way of the future?

  • Mission to Mars: Orion nuclear propulsion - Orbiter Space Flight Simulator -- Original uploaded on September 2, 2009 -- Project Orion was the first serious attempt to design a nuclear pulse rocket. The design effort was carried out at General Atomics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The idea of Orion was to react small directional nuclear explosives against a large steel pusher plate attached to the spacecraft with shock absorbers. Efficient directional explosives maximized the momentum transfer, leading to specific impulses in the range of 6000 seconds. With refinements a theoretical maximum of 100000 seconds (1 MN·s/kg) might be possible. Thrusts were in the millions of short tonnes, allowing spacecraft larger than 8×106 short tonnes to be built with 1958 materials. The reference design was to be constructed of steel using submarine-style construction with a crew of more than 200 and a vehicle takeoff weight of several thousand tonnes. This low-tech single-stage reference design would reach Mars and back in four weeks from the Earth's surface (compare to 12 months for NASA's current chemically-powered reference mission). The same craft could visit Saturn's moons in a seven-month mission (compare to chemically-powered missions of about nine years). A number of engineering problems were found and solved over the course of the project, notably related to crew shielding and pusher-plate lifetime. The system appeared to be entirely workable when the project was shut down in 1965, the main reason being given that the Partial Test Ban Treaty made ...

New From AlienScientist! Barium Titanate is a type of metamaterial that is added to the paint of stealth aircraft to make them more radar absorbant, because the compound is meta-active (has a negative permittivity and permeability) for frequencies in the radar range. Some compounds such as Gold have a negative permeability but a positive permittivity. This property gives gold it's yellowish metallic hue. • Exploring Inertial Propulsion Using Gyroscopic Motion info: We are told by the scientific establishment we live in a universe governed by Newtonian mechanics. NEWTON'S THIRD LAW: For every action, there's an equal and opposition reaction. So, according to Georgia State University hyperphysics website: "... All forces in the universe occur in equal but oppositely directed pairs. There are no isolated forces; for every external force that acts on an object there is a force of equal magnitude but opposite direction which acts back on the object which exerted that external force. In the case of internal forces, a force on one part of a system will be countered by a reaction force on another part of the system so that an isolated system cannot by any means exert a net force on the system as a whole. A system cannot "bootstrap" itself into motion with purely internal forces - to achieve a net force and an acceleration, it must interact with an object external to itself. ..." But is this true? Are we being told the truth? What would break the symmetry of oppositely directed pairs of forces? How would we do it? The correct answer is given a closed system that exhibits an imbalance of internal isolated forces in three dimensional space, the same system exhibits a balance of forces in four dimensional space. Could it be that the opposing reacting force component is directed as a torque or moment producing a torsion field that acts antigravitationally? Is the torsion field effect caused by a change in angular momentum ...

  • LightCraft Launch Oct 2000 - laserbeam powered propulsion Prior to liftoff, a jet of compressed air is used to spin the lightcraft to about 10000 revolutions per minute (RPMs). The spin is needed to stabilize the craft gyroscopically. Once the lightcraft is spinning at an optimal speed, the laser is turned on, blasting the lightcraft into the air. The 10-kilowatt laser pulses at a rate of 25-28 times per second. By pulsing, the laser continues to push the craft upward. The light beam is focused by the parabolic mirror on the bottom of the lightcraft, which heats the air to between 18000 and 54000 degrees Fahrenheit (9982 and 29982 degrees Celsius) -- that's several times hotter than the surface of the sun. When you heat air to these high temperatures, it is converted to a plasma state -- this plasma then explodes to propel the craft upward. (note: the Lightcraft here actually employed a plastic ablative propellant. So the "it burns air" statement is not entirely correct - the laser is igniting air AND PROPELLANT) Lightcraft Technologies uses a Pulsed Laser Vulnerability Test System (PLVTS), an offspring of the Star Wars defense program. The 10 kw Carbon-dioxide pulsed laser being used for the experimental lightcraft is among the most powerful in the world. more info: Wondering what's currently happening with Laser Launch Technology? • Ion Propulsion Ion Propulsion - Transport System to the Planets The efficiency of a rocket engine can be described by its specific impulse, which is the change of momentum gained from a 1 kilogram weight of propellent. The Space Shuttle main engines have a specific impulse of 453 seconds which is typical of a liquid fuelled rocket engine. An Ion thruster has a specific impulse of more than 3000 seconds and so requires less than a sixth of the fuel of a liquid fuelled engine. Gridded electrostatic ion thrusters commonly utilize Xenon gas. The gas is first ionized by bombarding it with electrons. The positively charged ions then diffuse through the positive grid and enter a potential difference between the positive and negative grids. The potential difference accelerates the ions to high velocities, which then leave the engine to create thrust. An electron emitter, on the exterior of the engine, neutralizes the ion beam to prevent charge build-up. The typical thrust of an ion engine is equivalent to a weight of 10 grams - about the weight of a sheet of paper. This means ion thrusters need to provide continuous thrust for a very long time in order to achieve a reasonable change in velocity. Electrostatic ion engines have been tested for 3.5 years of continuous thrust at full power. Collision of ions with the charged grids causes their erosion and will lead to eventual failure. Ion engines consume more than 2 kilowatts of electrical power, which may be generated by solar arrays or nuclear ...
