Elimination of Near Misses in Newborn Prophylaxis In 2009, a baby born at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth was discharged before results of tests on the mother were complete. The mother had tested positive for Hepatitis B, but staff were unable to get the baby's prophylaxis before they went home. They were able to get them to return for medication, but it was quickly identified as a risk. Working with both the laboratory and physicians, new steps were taken to develop rapid cycle testing to prevent a similar occurrence from happening. "We're real proud of the culture of safety that we've created at Texas Health Southwest," said Brett McClung, hospital president. The Phlebostep is an air cushion that is positioned between the patients foot and the end of the bed. It has an integrated sound and counter device allowing feed-back to patient and medical staff. A preliminary study in post-operative patients following orthopedic surgery showed an increase in venous blood flow of 99.9% in the Phlebostep exercised leg. The Phlebostep is the brain child of assoc. Prof. Dr. Olivier, Director of the Dept. of Orthopedic, Trauma and Hand Surgery at St.-Josefs-Hospital, Cloppenburg, Germany.

It is about the changes that are being made in Woodruff Park in Atlanta soon, and how they will affect the people who use the park currently. Among our cast of interesting individuals is Cooper Holland (the senior project manager), Allen Mullins (a homeless man who is running for mayor), Vincent Stringer (a former store-owner, playwright, and now near-homeless man), and many others. Current and Emerging Trends in DVT Prophylaxis Highlights from a Clinical Roundtable Important Safety Information for LOVENOX® WARNING: SPINAL/EPIDURAL HEMATOMA Epidural or spinal hematomas may occur in patients who are anticoagulated with low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) or heparinoids and are receiving neuraxial anesthesia or undergoing spinal puncture. These hematomas may result in long-term or permanent paralysis. Consider these risks when scheduling patients for spinal procedures. Factors that can increase the risk of developing epidural or spinal hematomas in these patients include: •Use of indwelling epidural catheters •Concomitant use of other drugs that affect hemostasis, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), platelet inhibitors, other anticoagulants. •A history of traumatic or repeated epidural or spinal punctures •A history of spinal deformity or spinal surgery Monitor patients frequently for signs and symptoms of neurological impairment. If neurological compromise is noted, urgent treatment is necessary. Consider the benefits and risks before neuraxial intervention in patients anticoagulated or to be anticoagulated for thromboprophylaxis. LOVENOX® cannot be used interchangeably with other low-molecular weight heparins or unfractionated heparin, as they differ in their manufacturing process, molecular weight distribution, and anti-Xa and anti-IIa activities, units and dosages.
