  • Przemysław Rudź - Summa Technologiae - Two Evolutions (excerpt) Summa Technologiae is Stanislaw Lem's (1921-2006) work which causes an enormous impression by its deep content and solid approach to the subject. This book shows addictive and fluent narration immersed in an ocean of erudition and the writers recognisable sense of humour. It is serious, idealistic and deeply philosophical. We can conclude that the book is timeless from the perspective of the decades which separate us from the first edition. Many of its ideas manifest themselves in today's reality, but we have to remember that they were formed inside the mind of the man living behind the iron curtain in a gloomy period of real socialism, mental stagnation and accumulating political, economic and social problems. This gives clear evidence of Lem's intellectual capacity and imagination. Music in this album is first and foremost a tribute dedicated to the great man. The titles of the composition refer to the original book chapters. They are my subjective attempt to translate their contents into a language of synthetic and mysterious sounds. They go beyond our terrestrial backyard to the wide world of stars, space flights and alien civilizations. As far as I was able to achieve this, I leave the assessment to my honourable listeners. I hope that slightly more than an hour spent with the music illustration to Summa Technologiae will let you step away from the problems of everyday life and embark on a journey to a land of sonic imagination. This would be for me the best reward ...

  • Challenge to Fundies: Moses wrote Genesis? I'm speaking of the Earthly author, not God. Verses: Abram and Sarai in Egypt: Genesis 12:10-20 Abraham and Sarah in Gerar: Genesis 20:1-18 This story (Genesis 20) is from the Elohist source and it combines elements found in two very similiar but distinct stories of the Yahwist accounts. Isaac and Abimelech in Gerar (the SAME location as the Genesis 20 account): Genesis 26:12-33 The first (1678) true Pentateuchal scholar was Richard Simon, who noticed that Genesis 1 and 2 seemed to differ in syle, and this was found elsewhere in Genesis. In the next century many others found that certain passages constantly called God 'Yahweh' and others 'Elohim'. These coul be be traced as two parallel stories interwoven throughout the Pentateuch all the way to Numbers. By the mid 19th century, it was commonly agreed that there had been three independent versions of the Pentateuch's basic story, which are the Yawhist source, the Elohist source, and the Priestly source. In 1878 Julius Wellhausen published the Prolegomena to the History of Israel, which he brought together all the arguments for the four-source theory, and also proposed dates for the writing of each source. Scholars accepting the Four Source Theory: William H. Propp Antony F. Campbell Mark A. O'Brien Richard Elliott Friedman Among others
  • Kant 2 - An informal Discussion of "Pure Mathematics" as a path to metaphysics in Kant's Prolegomena This is a conversation I had with two Linfield College Alums - Robin Cangie and Gad Perez - about the nature of "pure mathematics" as it's discussed in Kant's "Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics". In it, we discuss how "pure mathematics" is possible for Kant and whether or not this provides a possibility for doing Metaphysics as a science.

You can find the unabridged Kant podcast, along with dozens of others discussing philosophers from Plato to Hegel to Wittgenstein, at the Partially Examined Life website: About PEL The podcasters were all graduate students in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin back in the Clinton years. They all left the program at some point before getting their doctorates and have consequently since had time to get outside that whole weird world of academia and reflect on it and the various philosophical topics with a different, and probably much more lazy, perspective.

Here I try to give a brief recap of what we've talked about so far & then discuss 1) what "pure natural science" is for Kant, 2) why it's essential to us dealing with conceptualizing as perceiving beings, & 3) it's relationship to metaphysics as a science. We also discuss the limits of scientific knowledge in relation to absolute reality.
