  • Greek tourism crisis could precipitate default or more austerity A senior Greek government official has told the BBC that domestic terrorism and strikes have had a devastating impact on tourism, a key industry which generates 20 percent of the country's income. Experts on Crete, Greece's largest island, say that earnings from tourism this year are likely to fall by thirty percent, that's three times more than government estimates. Economists warn that such figures could force the Greek government to introduce new austerity measures to avoid defaulting on its debt. Our Athens correspondent Malcolm Brabant has been to Crete to assess the state of Greek tourism

  • Update on Precipitate Formation with Ceftriaxone and Calcium containing Products (July 2009) FDA is updating earlier recommendations about the interaction between the antibiotic ceftriaxone and intravenous products that contain calcium. In certain circumstances, this interaction can cause dangerous precipitates to form. Ceftriaxone is sold as Rocephin and also as a generic. Products that contain calcium include Ringer's solution, Hartmann's solution and parenteral nutrition formulations that contain calcium. FDA had previously recommended that ceftriaxone and calcium-containing IV products not be administered within 48 hours of one another for patients of all ages. This has now changed. It is no longer necessary to wait 48 hours in patients over 28 days old, provided that certain precautions are followed. And FDA is still stressing that ceftriaxone must not be used in neonates if they are receiving or will receive calcium-containing IV products. Ceftriaxone and products that contain calcium may now be administered sequentially to patients older than 28 days of age, as long as the infusion lines are thoroughly flushed between infusions with a compatible fluid. However, ceftriaxone must not be administered simultaneously with intravenous calcium-containing solutions through a Y-site. FDA also continues to advise practitioners not to reconstitute or mix ceftriaxone with products that contain calcium. There are no data on whether ceftriaxone might interact with calcium-containing products that are given orally. It's also not clear whether intramuscular ceftriaxone ...

  • Elementary Productions: Potassium Iodide and Lead Nitrate A petri dish is filled with a small amount of water. Potassium Iodide is added to the petri dish in one end, and Lead Nitrate in the other end. As the two salts diffuse, Lead Iodide is precipitated as a "barrier" surrounding the place where the Lead Nitrate was placed. This is because of a substance with a high molecular weight diffuses more slowly than a substance with a lower molecular weight. This rule applies for any medium used, in this case water. Another good example of diffusion is why flatulence is able to smell up a room in seconds. Hydrogen sulfide (the substance responsible for the smell) has a pretty low molecular weight, and therefore diffuses faster. This experiment serves as a good demonstration on diffusion, because of the difference in molecular weights, the insolubility of Lead Iodide in water, and the color of the precipitate.

  • MAKING A COPPER HYDROXIDE PRECIPITATE.wmv Good morning, in this video I'm going to show you how to make copper(II) hydroxide in a very simple way. Warning, sodium hydroxide which we will use is corrosive and copper hydroxide is irritant, please wear gloves during the experiment. Te raction we will perform is the following: two molecule of sodium hydroxide plus copper sulphate pentahydrate produce sodium sulphate and copper two hydroxide. Now let's get started. Put some water in a beaker or in a glass container. I'm using distilled water. Now add about eight grams of copper suphate penthydrate. Mix until they will be completely dissolved. Now take a larger container and do the same thing, adding water and four grams of sodium hydroxide. Solve them like you've already done for the copper solution, Now with a siringe take a little bit of water from the light blue solution and add it to the second one. A blue precipitate of copper (II) hydroxide is forming istantly: infact while the sodium sulphate which forms is soluble into water the copper hydroxide is not soluble at all. If you want to separate the two compounds it is necessary to philtrate the solution. And now you have copper(II) hydroxide. As you can see it is a pale blue gelatinous solid and it's used especially in organic chemistry, like fungicide and occasionally as ceramic colorant. Plaese suscribe, rate and comment.

  • Precipitating Platinum Precipitating Platinum ammonium chloride from Aqua Regia Solution. The source of the Platinum was 16.7 grams of 90/10 Pt/Ir thermocouples. The alloy took 7 hours to completely dissolve in hot diluted AR. I used zinc to precipitate the Pt and Ir together, then treated the resulting black powder with diluted AR again. After the two additional AR digestions, 1.2 grams of black powder remained. I filtered the solution then denoxxed the resulting solution and filmed the video. The Pt salt still has a scarlet tint indicating it still has some Ir in the salt. I'll have to calcine the salt and redissolve the resulting sponge in diluted AR, then precipitate again with ammonium chloride to get the nice canary yellow salt I'm looking for.

  • Selective Precipitation This General Chemistry lecture covers the selective precipitation of ionic salts as a result of adding acids, bases or common ions to solution. We discuss the effects of pH on the solubility of hydroxide salts, as well as salts that contain other bases such as carbonate anion. We discuss how to calculate the precipitation that occurs when two soluble salts cross-combine to precipitate an insoluble salt. Finally, we talk about the equilibria for formation of complex ions in solution, which can increase the solubility of some salts by decreasing the concentration of free metal ions in solution.
