  • Cancer Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellow Diego Acosta-Alvear on Multiple Myeloma Research Cancer Research Institute postdoctoral fellow Diego Acosta-Alvear, Ph.D., in the laboratory of Peter Walter, Ph.D., at the University of California, San Francisco - Howard Hughes Medical Institute in San Francisco, CA, is helping to conquer blood cancers by studying the regulation of the unfolded protein response in multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is an aggressive, incurable blood disease with poor survival rates and approximately 20000 cases per year in the United States. While therapeutic improvements have been made in the last decade, the disease remains incurable and the patients eventually succumb after becoming refractory to currently available treatments. Moreover, the biological cause(s) of the disease remain poorly understood. It is known that an essential mechanism called the unfolded protein response (UPR) is involved in protein synthesis for normal cellular functions, such as growth, communication, and survival. Therefore, a tight regulation of the UPR is a critical part of normal cell physiology. Accumulating evidence posits that some UPR components promote the survival of cancer cells and thus may contribute to myeloma progression. Dr. Acosta-Alvear is investigating the activation and regulation of UPR in multiple myeloma cells. He aims to establish molecular signatures associated with aberrant regulation of the UPR in multiple myeloma and to develop biochemical tools to manipulate the UPR to restrain tumor progression. By demonstrating that the UPR is ...

  • Decayed MCMC for probabilistic filtering Google Tech Talks March, 28 2008 ABSTRACT Bhaskara M. Marthi - Research Scientist I will describe an algorithm for probabilistic filtering, the problem of maintaining a probability distribution over the hidden state of a dynamical system given periodic noisy observations. This problem appears in various guises in practice, such as activity monitoring, state estimation, visual tracking, and fault diagnosis. Our algorithm, known as decayed MCMC, scales better than exact methods on many problems, and is less susceptible to losing track of the mode than the popular sequential Monte Carlo or particle filtering methods. Standard Markov chain Monte-Carlo mixing time ***yses are insufficient to bound the complexity of our algorithm, and so we extend them to the setting of convergence of a marginal distribution. Speaker: Dr. Bhaskara M. Marthi - Research Scientist Dr. Bhaskara Marthi is currently a postdoctoral research associate at MIT, working with Leslie Kaelbling and Tomas Lozano Perez on hierarchical planning and robotic manipulation. He received his PhD in 2006 from the University of California, Berkeley, working with Stuart Russell on reinforcement learning with partial programs, and its application to AI design for large real-time strategy video games. His other interests include probabilistic reasoning, relational and first-order models, and Monte Carlo algorithms.

  • TEDxWaterloo - Raymond Laflamme - 2/25/10 Raymond Laflamme is originally from Québec City, where he studied Physics as an undergraduate at the Université Laval. After surviving Part III of the Mathematical Tripos at the University of Cambridge, he completed his PhD on aspects of general relativity and quantum cosmology in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) under the direction of Stephen Hawking. Laflamme and his colleague Don Page are responsible for having changed Hawkings mind on the reversal of the direction of time in a contracting universe (see Hawkings book, A Brief History of Time). From 1988-1992, Laflamme held a Killam post-doctoral fellowship at UBC, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Peterhouse College, University of Cambridge. From 1992-2001, Dr. Laflamme worked as a research scientist at Los Alamos Research Laboratory, where his interests shifted from cosmology to quantum computing. Since the mid-1990s, Laflamme has developed theoretical approaches to quantum error correction, and has given experimental demonstrations of these techniques. In collaboration with Emmanuel Knill, Laflamme gave conditions for quantum error correcting codes, and established the fault-tolerance threshold, thereby showing that quantum computing systems could be practically useful. He went on to perform the first experimental demonstration of quantum error correction. With colleagues, he has developed a blueprint for a quantum information processor using linear optics, and devised and ...
  • Discursive Tactics of Resistance against the 'War on Terror' Narrative Adam Hodges, AW Mellon Postdoctoral Humanities Fellow at Carnegie Mellon, explores how the "war on terror" narrative has been retooled in recent years. How have political figures adopted or adapted that "war" as an explicit or implicit frame of reference? How have activists and artists appropriated elements of its rhetoric or images as they make their own critical interventions? The Center for the Arts in Society is a collaborative effort of scholars and artists affiliated with the College of Fine Arts and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Center aims to explore the role of the arts in society--the place and impact of the arts both in the workings of social power and in processes of social change. At the same time, it is dedicated to the exploration of the place of society in the arts--the ways in which diverse forms of social and political engagement have shaped the history of the arts, and might drive their transformation in the future.
