We compare and contrast the behavior of Newtonian and a viscoelastic fluid (polymeric solution) breaking in an oil continuous phase. All fluids (oil, Newtonian, and polymeric) have the same shear viscosity of approximately 0.24 Pa s. When a viscous solution is stretched by an external immiscible fluid (oil), a low 100 ppm polymer concentration strongly affects the breakup process, compared to the Newtonian case. At late times when viscoelastic stresses become important, polymer filaments show much slower evolution, longer filaments, and morphology featuring multiple connected drops. Measurements of filament thickness show two main temporal regimes: a flow- and capillary-driven. This means that such a material must yield, ie, undergo a transition from elastic deformation to flow (irrecoverable deformation) upon a startup of external deformation. The central question to address is whether this yielding would lead to strain localization, ie, inhomogeneous deformation, contrary to the textbook assumption of homogeneous deformation. Five years after the initial discoveries in Phys. Rev. Lett., 96, 016001; 196001; 97, 187801 (2006), we have now a pretty good idea of what to expect and why entangled polymers (over 100 million tons consumed yearly worldwide) respond to large deformation in manners different from the textbook description. The work is, in part, supported by the US National Science Foundation under grants DMR-0821697, CMMI-0926522 and DMR-1105135.

Single-chain polymeric nanoparticles by stepwise folding In an effort to mimic the folding of natural polymers, well-defined nanometer-sized objects formed by the folding of a single-chain polymer have been developed. These polymers are functionalized in the side chains with recognition units and can, after folding into a well-defined object, express specific functions, such as sensing or catalysis. The recognition unit of choice is the chiral benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) motif equipped with a photo-labile protecting group, which prevents aggregation. Upon the irradiation of ultraviolet light, BTAs self-assemble into helical stacks stabilized by threefold intermolecular hydrogen bonding (highlighted with a purple glow). The cooperative self-assembly of dangling BTAs as side chains offered detailed information on the folding behavior and the inner structure of the polymeric nanoparticles as revealed by CD spectroscopy. Controlled folding was obtained by photo-deprotection and with the aid of heating/cooling steps (red/blue background). At room temperature, the system resides in a kinetically trapped or collapsed state; a unimolecular glass or "molten globule" state. The more thermodynamically favorable folded state was achieved by an additional heating/cooling step. At high temperatures, the polymer backbone is more flexible. Slowly reducing the temperature induces BTA aggregation because there is sufficient mobility within the polymer to adopt an optimal conformation for self-assembly to occur. Solid Polymer Electrolytes Solid Polymer ElectrolytesMost often, the term "electrolyte" refers to liquid solutions and melts of substances, although a lot of solid substances with ionic conductivity have been known for a long time. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) are substances with a polymeric structure. Polymers also comprise functional groups able to dissociate with formation of cations or anions. Their directed movement within the polymer structure determines its ionic conductivity. This phenomenon was discovered by Peter Wright, a chemist from Sheffield, in 1975. He proved that ethylene polyoxies (EPO) can serve as a basis for sodium and potassium salts, which leads to formation of solid polymer electrolytes. Michel Armand suggested using intercalated graphite compounds for electrodes, because lithium-polymer complexes can be used as solid electrolytes in electrodes structure. Lithium salt can be dissolved in a solvating polymer matrix for the direct interaction of cations and electron pairs. The complex is formed (as a result of favorable competition between the solvation energy and lattice salt energy) and becomes a good conductor at temperatures of 60-80° C.Nevertheless, the notion of the formation of a salt complex and the nature of the charge transport mechanism was not the same as in other solid electrolytes.
