The political left's preoccupation with politicisation I always like it when the following steps take place: 1. I come to some conclusion on philosophy or politics 2. I mentally file that conclusion away 3. I read an article of Bill Vallicella's (which independently concludes the same thing as I did in step 1) 4. My conclusion is crystallised through Bill's written expressions. Like in this situation, when I read about a given news topic, and then I think "but that's the politicisation of [insert topic here]". Good examples are education, electricity pricing, poverty, and scientism. I say this as a recovering statist myself. But I might take it further than Bill. I say this because a woman was talking to me a few days ago, when she said the expression "every man and his dog". About two seconds later, she couldn't resist appending it with "and woman". I nearly had to bite my tongue. Her appendage was an unnecessary copout, since everybody knew what she meant to begin with. Thus, to interpret "man" literally is to accede to feminism and its faulty semantic presuppositions. I for one am going to resist that kind of coercion when I use that idiom.
Elected Police Commissioners, Avon & Somerset AGM angry & unanimously against - bristol Elected commissioners to get political advisers, minister suggests Elected police commissioners could get their own political advisers, costing £2million, raising fears of the politicisation of police work, it has emerged. The Daily Telegraph has learned that Nick Herbert, the Policing minister, made the pledge at a private meeting of 40 chairmen of police authorities at the Home Office on 9 November. According to one source Mr Herbert said: "It is my opinion that the first thing a directed elected individual will do is to appoint a political adviser." Hiring a political adviser for every new Police and Crime Commissioner for all 43 forces in England and Wales on around £40000 a year could be cost up to £2million. The news came after police authorities decided at their annual conference last week to fight the plans for elected police chiefs all the way. One source said: "At the end of the meeting it was unanimously decided to fight the imposition of these directly elected individuals. A campaign will start quickly. There will be a campaign to get this stopped." Police authority chairmen fear that putting too much power in the hands of one individual, will destroy the delicate tripartite responsibility for policing. The tripartite system gives control over the police to the Home Office, the Association of Chief Police Officers and police authorities. The source added that putting all this power in the hands of one person raised the risk of "corruption" at the top of forces ...
Review - Red Alert: The War Within Story: Suneil Shetty, a cook who delivers food to a band of Naxals holed up in a forest, is forced to join them, when the cops follow him and stage an encounter. Is this the initiation -- and politicisation -- of the apolitical simpleton into India's most violent and visible grassroot movements today? Movie Review: Now what could be more topical than a film on India's most burning issue of the moment: the Naxalite movement that has metamorphosed into a civil war that seems to be setting our nation on fire. Ananth Narayan's film, scripted by one of our finest women directors, Aruna Raje, is doubly important. First, it literally takes off from the headlines that have been glaring in your face in the last few years. Second, it dares to enter not only the geographical territory of the war within, but also explores the more tricky ideological terrain. Is there any justification at all for the maoist movement which has created heroes out of people who are allegedly responsible for unprecedented violence and death? More importantly an ideology which is gradually growing into a mass movement, resulting in an ever-growing Red corridor, running through the heart of India. Most of the drama is centred in a Maoist camp and witnessed through the eyes of Suneil Shetty, a humble cook who has no political leanings whatsoever. All he wants is to be left with his simple wife Bhagyashree and his two kids, after completing his job which entails delivering food for the fugitives. When one ...
Humanitarian Response Index 2010 Video In 2009, donors provided over 11.5 billion USD in aid to respond to needs of millions of people affected by conflicts and natural disasters around the world. Ensuring that aid is used correctly is no easy task, with humanitarian crises increasing in number and complexity. Today, humanitarian actors face daunting challenges to provide protection and assistance to those in need -- often entering into a complex interplay of competing national and international interests related to political, military, security or Development concerns. Add tighter budgets to this scenario, and the need for effective and efficient humanitarian assistance becomes more important than ever. The Humanitarian Response Index 2010 provides an objective overview of donor performance, which can assist governments in ensuring their humanitarian funding has the greatest posible impact for people in need. This year's report reveals the increasing politicization and militarization of humanitarian aid which compromises effective assistance to vulnerable populations and endangers humanitarian workers. The Humanitarian Response Index 2010 urges a principled approach by donor governments since respect of Good Humanitarian Donorship principles is essential to make humanitarian aid more effective.

China angry as Google stops censoring search results BEIJING, CHINA - Google's decision to shut down its internet search site for mainland China and stop censoring search results is "totally wrong" and represents a politicisation of business issues, China has said. In an immediate and sharply critical response to Google's announcement, China said the California-based internet giant had "violated the written promise" it made when it entered the Chinese market. "We firmly oppose politicising commercial issues, and express our dissatisfaction and anger at Google Inc's unreasonable accusations and practices," the state-run Xinhua news agency quoted an unnamed official from China's State Council Information Office as saying. The backlash followed an announcement from Google on Monday that it was shutting down its China-based site, , and redirecting search requests to Google's Hong Kong-based portal, .hk. The Hong Kong site is not subject to the same censorship rules as in mainland China. "Users visiting are now being redirected to .hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong," David Drummond, Google's chief legal officer, said on the company's blog. The switch throws the burden on China to use its own internet filters to prevent Chinese users from seeing images and sites it deems politically or socially undesirable. In January Google stunned many in the ...

5/7 Joel Kovel - Holocaust & Israeli Ethnic Cleansing In 1948, not long after the terrible events of the second world war around 750000 Palestinians were driven from their homes and refused the right to return afforded them (and all human beings) under International Law. 60 years later this process of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians is still going on, with Israel's immiseration of them aimed at forcing them to capitulate, accepting Israel's racist terms for their existence in the region, or to leave. Many Jewish people are extremely angry at what first Zionists and then Israel have done in their name and Joel Kovel, Jewish American scholar, activist and author of 'Overcoming Zionism', is one of them. Here he looks at the relationship between the terrible European crime of the Holocaust and its subsequent politicisation and use as the 'trump card' of Israel and her supporters in silencing effective criticism (at the political level) of Israel's crimes. Joel gives his thoughts on a number of the absurd claims those involved make to defend the indefensible: the idea that the holocaust was a wholly unique and terrible event bearing no relationships to other terrible events, and that this somehow takes away the right of anyone--particularly Europeans--to tell Israel what she may or may not do; and that anti-semitism is a wholly unique and innate hatred, unrelated to any other form of racism or bigotry, for which there is no solution other than for 'Jews' to live apart. MANIC STREET PREACHERS - IT'S NOT WAR - JOOLS HOLLAND 250th birthday show They are set to release their tenth studio album Postcards from a Young Man on 20 September 2010. It is preceded by the single "(It's Not War) Just the End of Love". Manic Street Preachers are an alternative rock band from Blackwood, Wales, formed in 1986. They are James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitars), Nicky Wire (bass, occasional vocals) and Sean Moore (drums, backing vocals, occasional trumpet). The band is part of the Cardiff music scene, most prominently during the 1990s. The Manics released their debut album Generation Terrorists in 1992. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery, outspoken invective and songs about "culture, alienation, boredom and despair" soon gained them a loyal following and cult status.[4][5][6] The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style, while adopting a broader alternative rock sound. Enigmatic lyricist Richey Edwards gained early notoriety by carving the words "4REAL" into his arm with a razor blade (narrowly missing an artery and requiring seven*** stitches) in response to the suggestion that the band were less than authentic. The dark nature of 1994's The Holy Bible reflected the culmination of Edwards' instability. Following Edwards' disappearance, Bradfield, Moore, and Wire persisted with the Manic Street Preachers and went on to gain critical and commercial success, becoming one of Britain's premier rock bands. They have had eight top ten albums and ...

Sinhala Message on the Occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture In this video Mr. Basil Fernando of the Asian Human Rights Commission discusses the widespread use of torture as a product of the collapse of the hierarchical control from the IGP down to the ASPs as a result of the politicisation of the police which, in turn, is a result of the 1978 Constitution. Prior to 1978 the Police Departmental Orders were better observed. Under the Departmental Orders the ASPs had the direct responsibility for the day-to-day supervision of the police stations under their charge. This supervision has practically ceased to exist and today ASPs also encourage and connive with the use of torture and ill-treatment as a method of criminal justice investigations. The failure of supervision is clearly manifest by the cases reported. What has happened within the Sri Lankan police is a failure of the leadership from the IGP down to the ASPs. The system is controlled from outside, that is, by the politicians. more; www.humanrights.asia
Zimbabwe education in steady decline Venue: Manicaland; Mashonaland Central Date: 16/08/2012 Context: With a former literacy rate of over 90% after gaining independence (CIA World Fact Book: 1990), Zimbabwe's standard of national education has seen a steady decline since the 2008 elections with a variety of politically motivated factors contributing to this impending crisis. This piece highlights various facets of the education problem. The current government, under ruling party Zanu-PF, has provided limited support and infrastructure to teachers and learners as various community members testify to. These include shortages of basic shelter and facilities. The politicisation of education by the ruling party also plays a role. Indoctrination of an autocratic regime's youth is the first step to maintaining power through fear and oppression learned at a young age. The children in an Independence Day celebration play re-enacts dramatic bush warfare scenes of dissidents being gunned down between party slogans damning any opposition, in this case, the MDC. In the case of Zimbabwe, the political aspirations of the ruling party threaten the education of many of Zimbabwe's youth as a concerned father testifies to. This is evident with a UNICEF survey estimating that primary school attendance has dropped from 80% to 20% in the last few years following the 2008 elections. While these factors worsen the country's education situation, various unions have recently taken to the streets striking for pay increases, something ...

Rethink Refugees - Rev. Elenie Poulos' story As an ordained Minister of the Uniting Church in Australia and the Director of the Church's national agency, UnitingJustice Australia, Elenie Poulos is a dedicated campaigner for human rights. She believes that the right to seek asylum is a basic human right and consistently speaks out against unfair treatment of asylum seekers especially those arriving by boats. "The level of attention and the shrillness of the debate have been out of all proportion to the numbers of arrivals which are, relative to other countries in the world, almost miniscule..." she says. "The slogan, 'Stop the Boats', was one of the worst examples of the politicisation of vulnerable people we have ever seen in this country." Elenie believes that asylum seekers are one of the most vulnerable and marginalised groups in Australian society. They are often torture and trauma survivors, and detaining them in remote detention centres for indefinite periods of time is a breach of human rights and only exacerbates their trauma. Her Christian faith drives her to work for justice and the compassionate treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. .au Produced by Visual Domain
Peaceful agitation after Eid in Bangladesh (শাহরিয়ারের স্বপ্নবিলাস) Dhaka, July 13 (bdnews24.com) — The main opposition will launch peaceful movement like the one in the Middle East to oust the government after Eid-ul-Fitr, party chairperson has announced. Addressing the gathering at the Wednesday's mass hunger strike programme, Khaleda Zia also asked people to prepare for that movement. "The fascist government will be ousted not through the politics of arson, vandalism or shutdown, but a peaceful movement like the one taking place in the Middle East." She said the movement would begin after the Eid, to be observed in the beginning of September. She told the audience, "You've to bring all including your family members with you." In her hour-long speech, the two-time former prime minister also said that the 15th amendment to the constitution would be annulled once BNP comes in power. The mass hunger strike, organised to protest the government's 'violent repression' on the opposition, ended with her speech. The eight-hour programme was held on the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh premises amid tight security. Khaleda also spoke of the government's failure, politicisation, treaties with India, and the excessive use of power by the administration, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Around 6 Dhaka University teacher Tajmery S Islam, Prof Tahmina and singer Baby Naznin formally urged her to end the strike. Apart from representatives from its allies, like-minded parties ...

The Politicisation of International Institutions Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn (Dean, Hertie School of Governance)
autonomy and political action 02 The film present a field research dealing with informal artist's networks in Japan. The goal is the preparation of points of reference and the mapping of an exemplary case study. Thesis 1 Growing Pressures on social relations to economise lead to greater solidarity and to the formation of informal artist's networks. In this way, resources for production and infrastructure (spaces, technology, relationships) can be supported. Public relations work can also be organised, target groups sought and profiles developed. An interdisciplinary dialogue makes possible the construction of international relationships and networks. Temporary forms of transitional production elude official politicisation. Economic forms in non-profit areas (volunteer work, self-exploitation, barter economies) must be critically interrogated. Thesis 2 The formation of group identities has effects on artistic contents. Politicisation and economisation are prolonged down into the small-scale structures of the artistic networks. It is virtually impossible to tell whether this occurs by compulsion or voluntarily. The organisational structure is based on voluntary work, but is also dependent on public assistance, donations, and sponsorship. Thesis 3 Spheres of artistic action consciously choose society as a system of references for their own production. In this sense, no autonomy actually exists. Moreover, the innovative potentialities of alternative forms of life and of production are assimilated and ...
