Ahmad Jamal Trio - Poinciana Ahmad Jamal (born July 2, 1930) is a noted American jazz pianist. Jamal was one of Miles Davis's favorite pianists and was a key influence on the trumpeter's "First Great Quintet" (featuring John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums). Davis had long admired Jamal's use of space and dynamics, and had asked Wynton Kelly to "sound more like Ahmad Jamal" on the track "Freddie Freeloader" on the landmark album Kind of Blue. Since the 1980s Jamal has been regularly touring the major clubs of the United States and the large European jazz festivals. He is generally accompanied by bassist James Cammack and drummer Idris Muhammad. He has also performed regularly with saxophonist George Coleman. Ahmad Jamal is an acclaimed virtuoso jazz pianist and keyboardist, composer, and innovative trio leader. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jamal attended George Westinghouse High School. He began playing piano at the age of three, when his uncle Lawrence challenged him to duplicate what he was playing on the piano. Jamal began formal piano training at the age of seven with Mary Cardwell Dawson, whom he describes as greatly influencing him. He converted to Ahmadiyya Islam in 1952, officially changing his name at that time. Poinciana - Jazz piano &. . . . . "Poinciana" 1936 song written by Nat Simon and Buddy Bernier, gained popularity in 1943, and has since become a standard. Ahmad Jamal scored a major popular "hit" in his version of Poinciana, recorded while live on tour from The Pershing Hotel's nightclub (southwest corner of 64th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, now demolished) in Chicago. In this my version the backing track I have done them with sequencer Logic Audio, and a sample of high-fidelity Gigastudio, bass and drums with brushes. Sorry for the bad sync of the video. However, it seems that at least the sound and the keyboard with the keys more or less works well :-)

Poinciana HUGE thanks to Doug McKenzie for the backing track, and for making the recording of this that inspired me to do my version. I have never actually played this tune before, but I am familiar with it. I learned the tune today, so there are some rough spots. Doug's version was so sweet and the backing track was grooving so badass that I was *compelled* to do this. But for sure go check out Doug's version. I'm afraid I'm nowhere near as laid back as he is, and my version may suffer as a result. Also, it appears to be time to get my piano tuned.

Poinciana transcription "Poiniciana", as originally and most beautifully performed by Ahmad Jamal Trio on the "Cross Country Tour 1958-1961" cd, and transcribed and played by me. Both piano and bass (played on piano as well) parts are reasonably transcribed, and drums kind of drag around trying to keep this somewhat tricky pattern used in the original version-- I'm not a drummer. I've used multi takes (obviously), with the original version in my ear (but in 80% speed), and this is my first experimental game in multi camera (actually multi take) video (and audio) editing. Performance is not flawless, but if ever decided to spend more time on this then I'll spend it on improving the written transcription.

Poinciana This was in the old days before I purchased my Roland FP-4 (please see my more recent videos to see that keyboard in action). I'm trying to get my audio/video sync problems worked out using an unweighted Roland A-37 controller keyboard. Boy am I glad I finally got my FP-4! Anyway, I heard McCoy do a version of this that kills. Sorry I was moving around so much but I had to lean over to start the backing tracks and my piano bench was in the wrong spot and I kept trying to shift to get myself into proper playing position. I know it's distracting to me, so don't watch, just listen. I wasn't sure if my sync problems were worked out - you can hear my remarks at the end, "I don't think so, but we'll give it a try", and so that's what this is...a try. Also, sorry if it sounds sloppy, but that's what I get for trying to do this on the A-37 instead of a fully weighted keyboard. Band-in-a-Box is providing the backing.

Performing with bassist Jamil Sulieman Nasser and drummer Frank Gant, Jamal shows that his basic style has evolved since the 1950s but is still quite recognizable. He uses the electric piano as a double for color and stretches out on three numbers (including a remake of his hit "Poinciana") in addition to playing a five minute version of Herbie Han***'s "Dolphin Dance." Producers Henry Cosby and Phil Jones gave Herb Jimmerson and his wife and lead vocalist, Vi Ann their break on the disco scene. But it was not long after when they caught onto the formula that was necessary for dance floors and came forth with the second LP, Lets Fly. Both LPs are winners. They contain Jimmersons magic keyboards and Vi Anns fabulous vocals. On this first LP Poinciana was my choice for one of the loveliest tracks recorded for a cover song recorded by Bing Crosby in 1944 and charted at the time. The backing vocals on the first LP were performed magnificently by Two Tons O Fun (Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash) and Sharon Hymes giving the songs a touch of magic. I had the privilege of seeing Paradise Express here in San Diego back in 1979 at a local club when You Set Me On Fire and Lets Fly were on top of the dance charts. It was an incredible experience Vi Ann truly brought the house down and Herb was right by her side. Not much is known about them and where they are now, but these LPs and this song will live on forever in many disco enthusiasts minds and feet. My ReStructure gives Poinciana a chance to reach some new listeners and dancers.
