  • Plastic Recycling in Bangladesh WONG: One man's garbage is another man's fortune. In Bangladesh, used plastic bottles that are found in garbage dumps and litter drains and roadside dishes are providing much-needed income to impoverished people. They're also creating a new export commodity for the country. Here's a closer look. STORY: Over the past five years, the recycling of the Poly Ethylene Terephthalate or PET bottles has steadily grown into an industry in Bangladesh. The extremely poor and street children scavenge the used packaging for food products, beverages and edible oils sell them to factory owners. The factories sort the bottles and containers into different colors before crushing them into pieces to make plastic flakes, which are in high demand from many Southeast Asian countries. Most of the work is done manually. [Parveen Begum, Recycling Worker]: "We have been working in this factory for five long years, we separate colored and white bottles from the dump. Four members of our family are working here and earning our livelihood out of this and living fine by the grace of God." The flakes are made into fibers and are a base material for clothing, pillows, carpets and polyester sheets. [Sarwar Wadud Chowdhury, Flake Exporters Assoc.]: "Poor people collect these non-traditional items from garbage and the roadside and supply them to our factories. In our factory we sort and recycle them to make PET flakes. These PET flakes are exported to China, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Our importers make ...

What you need to know, from Cornell University What you can do: Learn the names of environmental estrogens Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental estrogen found in polycarbonate plastics (recycle symbol 7). It is also used in the epoxy lining of metal cans (food cans). Minimize leaching from polycarbonate sports or baby bottles -Wear and tear, harsh detergents, or heat can cause bisphenol A to leach out. -Hand-wash bottles in mild detergent. -Don't leave bottles where they can heat up (hot car, hot sand, etc.). -Don't use bottles that are worn or scratched; recycle or reuse. -Microwave food or beverages in glass or lead-free ceramic containers. Make alternative choices -Consider using food-grade stainless steel water bottles or glass baby bottles. -Minimize use of canned foods; eat more fresh produce or dried products instead. • Plastic Plague Far out at sea and deep in the nation's heartland, experts are discovering the disturbing consequences of a hitchhiker in our waters---plastic. On the remote islands in the Pacific, a team of researchers is trying to solve the mystery of why albatross chicks with full bellies are starving. Many miles away another team is finding more plastic than plankton in giant garbage patch of ocean called the North Pacific Gyre. Could these two events be related? What's equally worrisome, is the menacing wake plastic pollution leaves on fresh water and consequently, our health. Scientists in Missouri are finding a gender-bending chemical called bisphenol A in local streams who's source may be plastics. They are also finding this nasty compound leaching out of commonly used plastic products (including baby bottles).

  • Plastics...too valuable to throw away Plastics have changed the world, and they continue to do so but the innovative potential of plastics is far from exhausted. Plastics are eco-efficient in many ways. For example, they efficiently insulate buildings, they provide light-weight and safe packaging, they reduce the weight of cars and make them quieter; and they help us to harness the sun and wind as energy sources. But at some point, every product comes to the end of its useful life. Energy recovery is the incineration of plastic waste, while simultaneously using the energy for generating electricity or steam or for providing process heat. Energy recovery is particularly suitable for mixed or contaminated fractions of plastic waste. The high calorific value of plastics is actually similar to that of fuel oil. Therefore, plastics can partly substitute fuel oil as primary raw material, immediately conserving primary resources. In the early years of the European Packaging Directive entering into force, the primary goal of the plastics industry was its contribution to ensuring the recovery of used plastics and creating the necessary recovery capacities. Today's goal is eco-efficiency, which means recovery that is efficient both in ecological and economic terms.
  • World Oceans Day Statement on Plastic Pollution Following a presentation to Google employees by Captain Charles Moore, an oceanographer who pioneered the study of plastic debris, the Strategic Council on Plastic Pollution convened at the Google Campus in Mountain View, California on June 4, 2009. It was the first meeting for the council on plastic pollution, which was recently formed to raise awareness of this rising threat to the world's oceans. Said council member and marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, We are finding plastic in the stomachs of sea turtles, birds, and fish all over the world. I find this extremely disturbing." In honor of World Oceans Day, the council has issued the following statement regarding this increasingly urgent threat to wildlife and human health: Do you know where our plastic goes? Did you know that our oceans are filling up with plastic pollution? Plastic fragments contaminate even the most remote locations on earth, and harmful chemicals leached by plastics are present in the bloodstream and tissues of almost every one of us. Plastic pollution harms people, animals, and the environment. Plastic is not biodegradable. In the marine environment, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller particles that absorb toxic chemicals, are ingested by wildlife, and enter the food chain that we depend on. Consumption of throwaway plastics, such as bottles, containers, bags, and packaging, has spiraled out of control. Recycling is not a sustainable solution. The reality is that most of our ...

  • Our Today Is Forever Video mashup by Steve Thomson of Plomomedia. Music by Queen. Plastic is forever Plastic is a material that the Earth cannot digest. Every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists, except the small amount that has been incinerated, and has become toxic air and particulate pollution. Plastic is poisoning our food chain In the environment, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller particles that attract toxic chemicals. These particles are ingested by wildlife on land and in the ocean, and contaminate our food chain. Plastic affects human health Harmful chemicals leached by plastics are already present in the bloodstream and tissues of almost every one of us, including newborns. Single Use plastics and Disposable plastics are the main source of plastic pollution Consumption of single use and disposable plastics has spiraled out of control. They are used for seconds, hours, or days, but their remains will last hundreds of years. Recycling is not a sustainable solution Unlike glass and metal, recycling plastic is costly and does not stem the production of virgin plastic product. Most of our plastic waste is landfilled, downcycled or exported to other countries. More information:
  • Why Is Plastic Packaging Toxic? Learn more and download a free health report on toxins at ! In this segment, Dr. Isaac Eliaz exposes the growing dangers of plastic packaging. Each year in the United States, nearly 90 million plastic bottles are purchased, burdening both the environment and your health. Certain chemicals contained in these plastic containers—including bisphenol-A (BPA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)—act as xenoestrogens, or substances that mimic estrogen in the body. They seep into your beverages during normal use, and are especially potent at high temperatures. These substances can disrupt crucial antioxidant and DNA activity, as well as interrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system. This influence has dangerous consequences, ultimately heightening the risk of cancer in adults, and contributing to developmental problems in infants and young children. To minimize damage to both the planet and your health, you should switch to glass or stainless steel bottles and containers, which can be safely re-used by everyone in the family.
