True granite contains both plagioclase and alkali feldspars. When a granitoid is devoid or nearly devoid of plagioclase the rock is referred to as alkali granite. When a granitoid contains less than 10% orthoclase it is called tonalite. A granite containing both muscovite and biotite mica is called a binary or two-mica granite. Two-mica granites are typically high in potassium and low in plagioclase, and are usually S-type granites or A-type granites. The volcanic equivalent of plutonic granite is rhyolite.   • Hayabusa claims first dust from asteroid (Japan) November 16, 2010 Success! The Hayabusa space explorer has picked up dust from the Itokawa asteroid, from which it returned in June after a seven-year mission. The grains are the first materials ever returned to Earth from an asteroid. Researchers at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced on 16 November that ***ysis of the mineral compositions of around 1500 micrometre-sized grains from Hayabusa's recovery capsule showed that almost all the dust was extra-terrestrial. Tell-tale signs came from the composition of the minerals olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase in the grains, which were very different to the compositions seen on Earth, explained Trevor Ireland, an Australian scientist who was involved in the preliminary investigation of Hayabusa's returned sample after its capsule was recovered in Woomera in June (pictured right). The mineral troilite (iron sulfide) was also spotted -- which is not seen on Earth, but is common in chondrites (ancient stony meteorites). Researchers had hoped for larger peanut-sized asteroid rocks. But after the US$230 million probe's troubled journey to and from Itokawa, the presence of even tiny asteroid particles is a triumph for Hayabusa, which has inspired further near-Earth asteroid exploration efforts. Vesta is heavily cratered with a surface covered by impact debris, a regolith. One important goal of the Dawn mission is to develop an understanding of regolith processes that are affecting this surface debris. Regolith characteristics are a record of interaction with the environment (eg, impactors, dust, solar wind, galactic cosmic-rays) and give evidence of surface processes (down-gravity movement, etc.). Regolith mineralogy and composition reflect the local bedrock, with influences from regional and global mixing. Understanding regolith processes will aid in determining the lithology of underlying crust. Vesta is most likely the parent asteroid of the howardite, eucrite and diogenite meteorites.   • Orbicular Rocks Granito Orbicular Caldera Atacama Chile Orbicular Rocks or Granito Orbicular next to Caldera, Atacama, Chile, Southamerica. Orbicular rocks have been reported in few places of the world: Chile, Finland, Australia, New Zeland, Sweden and Southafrica. They are rare textural varieties of magmatic (plutonic) rocks, in Chile, made out of granite. They occur from granitic to mafic, ultramafic and carbonatic types of rocks. Most of them made out mainly of : K-feldspar and plagioclase, quartz, dark minerals like hornblende or biotite. Round bodies called "orbicules" or just "orbs". Some are elongated due to deformation by exposure to very high pressure and temperature. All of them contain a core in the middle surrounded by radially grown crystals. The outer part of an orbicule shows concentric lines - called "shells". Some rocks have only got one single shell, but most of the rocks contain a lot of concentric shells.   • MoonFaker: Moon Rocks Revisited. Episode 6, Oxidation, Micas & Ferric Iron in Apollo Samples. PART 2 One of the most frequent objections raised by propagandists and for that matter Wikipedia vandals is the supposed absence of oxidation in the Apollo samples. It is argued that if these samples was derived from terrestrial rocks or meteorites, their exposure to the atmosphere would have created secondary oxides and minerals. A favorite example of such secondary materials is ferric iron oxide or rust or Fe3+, whichever you prefer to call it. Sadly for the propagandists, such ferric iron is indeed in these samples. And not simply in trace amounts. Schürmann & Hafner (1973) for example discovered that the ferric iron to total iron ratios of plagioclases in various Apollo basalts are the same as those for terrestrial anorthosites after being heated for two days in evacuated quartz tubes. And later in 1981, Hunter & Taylor found that a lot of the Apollo 16 rocks contain abundant rust. The samples that contain such ferric iron include not only the rusty rocks 66095 and 67455, but also the famous sample 61016 or "Big Muley". This sample has frequently been cited by propagandists as evidence for Apollo, and yet it contains the copious amounts of ferric iron they claim is absent! Classification and mineralogy: Predominantly opyroxene (Fs24.9Wo3.3, FeO/MnO = 34.9) with minor chromite (some as relatively large grains), calcic plagioclase, olivine (Fa26.5, FeO/MnO = 40.8), troilite and altered Ni-poor metal. Partly cataclasized metamorphic texture with ~120° triple grain junctions among compositionally homogeneous orthopyroxene grains. The overall pale orange color of this sample appears to be the result of mild staining by iron hydroxides.

  • Granite! The Versatile Igneous Rock The minerals that are found in granite are primarily quartz, plagioclase feldspars, potassium or K-feldspars, hornblende and micas. Quartz is usually the last mineral to crystallize and fills in the extra space between the other minerals. Quartz's hardness, lack of chemical reactivity and near lack of cleavage give granite a significant amount of its desirable durable properties. The quartz will appear gray, but is actually colorless and is reflecting and fusing the colors of the white and black minerals surrounding it. The plagioclase feldspars are generally white with a porcelaneous luster. The K-feldspars are generally the ones that give granite its color variations from yellow to orange to pink or blue. Dark K-feldspars can give granite its black varieties as well. The micas are generally muscovite (silver), biotite (black or brown) or lepidolite (violet or pink) and provide the sparkle that some granites possess. The hornblende and biotite provide granite with the black pepper portion of the famous and distinctive "salt and pepper" look to classic granite. As an igneous rock, granite forms from melted or molten rock called magma. As an intrusive rock, granite forms from molten rock that never reaches the surface of the Earth. Here, volcanic rock composes neat arrays of giant polygonal joint columns along the shore. Amongst these the hexagonal rock columns are most typical examples. Catching your eyes with striking angular facets, these giants are rare natural prodigies and invaluable geo-tourism resources that draw great interest. Around High Island Reservoir, especially the East Dam, you can observe the most typical hexagonal columnar joints from different angles. There is also a chance to examine the rock composition and structure at close range. Looking down from the East Dam rock cliff, you have a clear view of buckles in the hexagonal columnar joints. Judging by the s-shape section, we know the rock columns buckled under gravity before it could cool down completely and solidify, and thus the scene we see today. With such evidence, it is easy to trace the formation of volcanic extrusive rock. At the observation point for the hexagonal columnar joints, you can also find outcropped basic lamprophyre veins. Lamprophyre is a dark dyke comprising mainly biotite, amphibolite, augite and light minerals like plagioclase and orthoclase. It is usually in vein attitude and wide distribution. Dinosaur Rock, Lebanon County on State Game Lands 145; The boulder area covers about an acre. Geology: This outcrop is an erosional remant of an igneous rock called diabase. During the Jurassic period in southeastern Pennsylvania, a large mass of molten rock cut upward into Triassic sedimentary rocks. Subsequent erosion of rocks allowed these resistant rocks to form some of the highlands of the piedmont. The diabase is composed mostly of minerals plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. Crystals of plagioclase are enclosed with pyroxene crystals, which give it a texture called "ophitic." The boulders are spheroidally weathered. A profile of the rocks from the north or south reveals a form that gives the outcrop its name—"Dinosaur Rock." The outcrop is said to date from the Triassic Period, 208-245 million years ago, when the first dinosaurs appeared on Earth.

One of the episodes covered the overwhelming similarities between earth rocks and moon rocks and the alleged absence of water in the latter, and how it led to the Giant Impact Theory. The similarities discussed in the BBC source are as follows: a) The moon rock was almost identical to the most basic kind of rock on earth. b) The isotopes of oxygen in the lunar rocks were exactly the same as on the earth. c) It was as old as the earth, 4.5billion years. d) Geologists knew the only way this rock could have formed was if the moon was once completely molten. Good point, except, oxidation is not the only way to produce metallic oxides. The oxides present in moon rocks were formed at extremely high temperatures during the moon's infancy by a process called fractional crystallization, not as a result of oxidation.
