Cat in a tree Wiki: Cats have excellent night vision and can see at only one-sixth the light level required for human vision. This is partly the result of cat eyes having a tapetum lucidum, which reflects any light that passes through the retina back into the eye, thereby increasing the eye's sensitivity to dim light. Another adaptation to dim light is the large pupils of cats' eyes. Unlike some big cats, such as tigers, domestic cats have slit pupils. These slit pupils can focus bright light without chromatic aberration, and are needed since the domestic cat's pupils are much larger, relative to their eyes, than the pupils of the big cats. Indeed, at low light levels a cat's pupils will expand to cover most of the exposed surface of its eyes. However, domestic cats have rather poor color vision and can only see two colors: blue and green, and are less able to distinguish between red and green, although they can achieve this in some conditions. Cats' whiskers are highly sensitive to touch. Cats have excellent hearing and can detect an extremely broad range of frequencies. They can hear higher-pitched sounds than either dogs or humans, detecting frequencies from 55 Hz up to 79 kHz, a range of 10.5 octaves; while humans can only hear from 31 Hz up to 18 kHz, and dogs hear from 67 Hz to 44 kHz, which are both ranges of about 9 octaves. Cats do not use this ability to hear ultrasound for communication but it is probably important in hunting, since many species of rodents make ultrasonic ...

Recent genetic evidence, however, suggests that Callorhinus is more closely related to some sea lion species, and the fur seal/sealion subfamily distinction has been eliminated from most taxonomies. For these reasons, the distinction remains useful. [edit] Physical appearance Fur seals share with other ...

Hardy Evergreen Ferns - Millie Davenport Hi, I amMillie Davenport, a horticulture extension agent with the Clemson University Home and Garden Information Center. Today we are looking at Hardy Evergreen Ferns. We are here in the South Carolina Botanical Gardens and we are going to look at a few evergreen ferns. Now, when we think of evergreen, we think of plants usually like our trees and shrubs that hold their foliage for 2 to 3 years. Well, with evergreen ferns it is a little different. They actually will hold their foliage through the winter months and then that foliage will actually die back as spring comes on and that is when the new foliage will come on. Now, the first fern we are going to look at is a native fern and it is the Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). The Christmas Fern gets its common name from a couple of different stories. There are three different stories that I have heard about this common name. The first one is if you look at the pinnae or the actual leaflets on the frond, they look like a Christmas stocking or a winter sleigh. The other story is that this is one of the few things that is green at the time of Christmas. And the other story, which I preferred and liked the reason for this name, is that the early settlers of North America used the Christmas Fern to decorate during the holiday season. The Christmas Fern has a classic fern shape with these really nice, arching branches. And the fronds themselves will reach about 1 to 2 feet long and the widest parts of the frond is in ...

Barn owls locating and capturing prey solely by sound Barn Owls have a disk-shaped face that is said to resemble a heart. This disk is not decorative—it performs an important function. The owl's ears are placed asymetrically on the sides of its head. The disk around the face helps to funnel sound into the owl's ears and allows it to zero in on the exact location of prey - even in total darkness. They have the best hearing of any animal tested. The Barn Owl's face can be thought of as the outer part called pinnae) of its ears with the sole purpose of directing sound into the ear openings. Barn owls are capable of locating and capturing prey solely by sound, although they also have excellent night vision. This "satellite dish" on the Barn Owl's face is so important it has a unique accessory that no other owl has: a special "comb" on one toe of each foot, which is used to comb the disk and keep it in good shape.

Northern Fur Seals Grooming See these nothern fur seals up close filmed in HD quality! The Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is an eared seal found along the north Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the largest member of the fur seal subfamily (Arctocephalinae) and the only species in the genus Callorhinus. Northern fur seals have extreme ***ual dimorphism, with males being 30--40% longer and more than 4.5 times heavier than adult females. The head is foreshortened in both ***es because of the very short down-curved muzzle, and small nose, which extends slightly beyond the mouth in females and moderately in males. The pelage is thick and luxuriant, with a dense underfur that is a creamy color. The underfur is obscured by the longer guard hairs, although it is partially-visible when the animals are wet. Features of both fore and hind flippers are unique and diagnostic of the species. Fur is absent on the top of the fored flippers and there is an abrupt "clean shaven line" across the wrist where the fur ends. The hind flippers are proportionately the longest in any otariid because of extremely long, cartilaginous extensions on all of the toes. There are small claws on digits 2--4, well back from the flap-like end of each digit. The ear pinnae are long and conspicuous, and *** of dark fur at the tips in older animals. The mystacial vibrissae can be very long, and regularly extend beyond the ears. Adults have all white vibrissae, juveniles and subadults have a mixture of ...
