The Professor is also an accomplished author and broadcaster who has presented TV documentaries for the BBC. He has been granted an Honorary Fellowship of the British Science Association - one of only 80 people to receive that honour in the last 200 years. In this interview, Professor Al-Khalili discusses his interest in science and his personal scientific heroes. He also outlines how discoveries about the achievements of scientists in Muslim civilisation (Ibn Sina, Al-Khwarizmi, Ibn Al-Haytham etc) had a huge influence on Western giants of science. --------- 1001Inventions is a global educational initiative that promotes awareness of the scientific and cultural achievements of Muslim civilisation during the Middle Ages and how those contributions helped build the foundations of our modern world. Working with worlds leading academics, 1001 Inventions engages with the public through educational media and interactive global exhibitions, in order to highlight the shared cultural and technological inheritance of humanity. Launched in the United Kingdom in March 2006, 1001 Inventions has successfully educated more than a million people, promoted cross-cultural understanding and strengthened social cohesion. 1001 Inventions was created by the academic Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC) with support ...

Susskind discusses the story behind the black hole conflict and how it has led to a better idea of how our universe works - The Commonwealth Club of California Leonard Susskind is a theoretical physics professor at Stanford University in the field of string theory and quantum field theory. Susskind is widely regarded as one of the fathers of string theory for his early contributions to the String Theory model of particle physics.

  • Can group meditation bring World Peace? Quantum Physicist, John Hagelin explains. For more information visit - Can group meditation bring World Peace? World renowned Quantum Physicist, John Hagelin Ph.D explains. Dr John Hagelin I am going to show you very quickly some of the early research, this is the first study and I won't go into great detail except to say that this experiment was performed in the Middle East during the peak of the Lebanon War in the early 1980's. It was hypothesized, based on many different smaller experiments that if enough people were collectively experiencing and stimulating this fundamental powerful field of peace within that there would be radiated influence of peace that would effect the behavior of people throughout society, people would wake up in the morning a decide "hey I don't think I'll kill anybody today." What a novel thought, that you know with some expanded comprehension and less narrowly cramped, narrowly self centered, acutely stressed vision that the desperate acts of terrorism simply don't really have a fertile field to fall on. A thousand people on average practiced Transcendental Meditation in Jerusalem to see whether they could influence neighboring Lebanon in reducing war and terrorism and eventually World Peace. John Hagelin is a world renowned quantum physicist who has been involved in the research on group meditation for improving the quality of life in society.
  • Why Physicists Need the Large Hadron Collider Google Tech Talks October 17, 2008 ABSTRACT The LHC is the biggest (27 kilometers around) scientific instrument ever built and it is now ramping up to start taking data. It smashes together protons at enormous energy in order to create new forms of matter. Physicists hope to find the Higgs Boson which is the missing link in our current theory. Hopefully unanticipated discoveries will be made. I will explain why physicists need this expensive tool in order to understand nature at the smallest distance scales. Speaker: Edward Farhi Edward Farhi was trained as a theoretical particle physicist but has also worked on astrophysics, general relativity, and the foundations of quantum mechanics. His present interest is the theory of quantum computation. As a graduate student, Farhi invented the jet variable "Thrust," which is used to describe how particles in high energy accelerator collisions come out in collimated streams. He then worked with Leonard Susskind on grand unified theories with electro-weak dynamical symmetry breaking. He and Larry Abbott proposed an (almost viable) model in which quarks, leptons, and massive gauge bosons are composite. With Robert Jaffe, he worked out many of the properties of a possibly stable super dense form of matter called "Strange Matter" and with Charles Al*** and Angela Olinto he studied the properties of "Strange Stars." His interest then shifted to general relativity and he and Alan Guth studied the classical and quantum prospects of ...

  • The Uncertainty Principle, Light Particles In quantum physics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle is the statement that locating a particle in a small region of space makes the momentum of the particle uncertain; and conversely, that measuring the momentum of a particle precisely makes the position uncertain. In quantum mechanics, the position and momentum of particles do not have precise values, but have a probability distribution. There are no states in which a particle has both a definite position and a definite momentum. The narrower the probability distribution is in position, the wider it is in momentum. Physically, the uncertainty principle requires that when the position of an atom is measured with a photon, the reflected photon will change the momentum of the atom by an uncertain amount inversely proportional to the accuracy of the position measurement. The amount of uncertainty can never be reduced below the limit set by the principle, regardless of the experimental setup. A mathematical statement of the principle is that every quantum state has the property that the root-mean-square (RMS) deviation of the position from its mean (the standard deviation of the X-distribution) \Delta X = \sqrt{\langle X^2 \rangle-\langle X \rangle ^2 } \, times the RMS deviation of the momentum from its mean (the standard deviation of P): \Delta P = \sqrt{\langle P^2 \rangle-\langle P \rangle ^2} \, can never be smaller than a small fixed multiple of Planck's constant: \Delta X \Delta P \ge {\hbar ...
