Dixie Cups 1971 ad "Vishniac" :30, from Georgia-Pacific In 1971, this ad for sanitary, disposable Dixie bathroom cups used photomicrography by Russian-American photographer and biologist Roman Vishniac to show viewers the kind of germs that might be living on their shared bathroom glass. The ad quite literally brings into focus one of the main arguments Dixie ads had made since 1960 for using Dixie cups - that harmful germs can grow on unrinsed, shared glasses ( ) Though Vishniac is perhaps best known for his candid and portrait photography in Central and Eastern European Jewish shtetls from 1935 to 1939, he did extensive work in photomicography (that is, pictures and film taken through microscopes) of insects and microorganisms, was a professor of biological education at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and was the project director and filmmaker for the National Science Foundation's series of educational films, Living Biology.

Soil Effects in a Canadian Circle BLT Research have a study on the soil in a crop formation which was found in Sept 1999 EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA The fact that the field was infested with Canadian thistle, which made it almost impossible to walk in the field without high protective boots, tended to further rule out the possibility that this formation had been mechanically produced. The full study is available online, Clay minerals (illite/smectites) extracted from surface soils taken at the same sampling locations as the plants, were submitted to X-ray diffraction ***ysis. The results were submitted to Dr Robert C.Reynolds, Jr. In Reynold's words, "the possibility of crystal growth seems remote." The degree of pressure known to be involved in causing crystal growth in sedimentary deposits would have, had it been present, completely obliterated the plants. And the 600-800°C temperatures, over a period several hours, known to be necessary to promote such crystal growth in the laboratory would have, in the crop circle field, incinerated any plant material present. Additionally, the very brief bursts of possibly intense microwave radiation thought to be the cause of node-elongation and the creation of expulsion cavities (through heating and expansion of internal stem moisture) could not account for crystal growth. Microscopy Art Wonders MICROSCOPY ART WONDERS This is where I integrate Science and Visual Arts... I made this fascinating discovery of crystalized patterns during a slide preparation, where the stain solution (tincture of iodine) dried up together with the live specimen of human sperm. I almost discard the slides, but gave it a second look under the microscope. And behold, the new form of modern microscope art!
