However, their hair, if allowed to accumulate, can cause un-cleanliness, so vacuum, clean up more often and purchase a HEPA air filter. When doing your exchanges, it is a good idea not to have your pets in the same room. Ask your medical professionals to seek out and share success stories with you! It is a scientifically proven fact that when ill people have something to love, they feel better and healthier. There are lots of people currently doing PD that have pets and have not experienced any infections.

  • Does Pancho have non-effusive Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)? Pancho was a 5 year old domestic shorthair cat who was referred to Dr Diane D. Addie as a cat already being treated for FIP. His referring veterinary surgeon wanted to know if there was a better treatment than just prednisolone that he could be given to extend his life. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is one of the main infectious causes of death in the cat, especially affecting purebred cats and cats in rescue environments -- anywhere a lot of cats are kept indoors. No matter what any laboratory or manufacturer of test kits claims, there is no single test for FIP -- diagnosis is a challenge to even the most competent veterinary clinician and involves following a series of steps on an algorithm (free to download from ). FIP can present as effusive (wet) or non-effusive (dry). This film is a case report of a suspect non-effusive case, taking the viewer step by step through the FIP diagnostic algorithm. The free FIP diagnostic algorithm and worksheet can be downloaded at: www.dr-/downloads.html I apologise for the poor sound on this video -- I'm afraid I haven't quite mastered that technical aspect yet. I am very grateful to Pancho himself, and to his guardian Danièlle Merian, for allowing their story to help others. • Cat with FIP or Feline Infectious Peritonitis Casper the persian cat was eating ok, but had fluid in the belly. Xrays and surgery revealed the problem to be a tumor in the intestine and feline infectious periotonitis or FIP. Surgery revealed fluid in the belly, and a tumor in the intestines. FIP is a virus that infects young cats or cats with poor immunity, especially in dense cat populations like catteries or feral cat colonies.
  • Child abuse and murder - where is the justice? A 23-month-old baby boy (Seong-Min Lee) was beaten to death at daycare (Ul-San-City, S.Korea) owned by Chae (director) and Nam (her husband). They asserted that the baby was treated well, but he fell down from a 75-cm-high piano bench a couple of days before his death. Kyung-Ju police officers investigated the case based on their claim. Postmortem examination revealed that the direct cause of his death was peritonitis due to intestinal transection. Medical Examiner's Office reported child abuse is strongly suspected from the existence of multiple bruises of various stages over his body, tear in the roof of his mouth, and defense injuries. Although peritonitis can be cured if it is treated promptly, Chae and Nam did not take the baby to the hospital to conceal their crime, and put him in agony for 2-3 days and eventually death. Despite the medical and strong circumstantial evidences supporting child abuse and murder, the judge (Chae-Hae Kim, Kyung-Ju Prosecutor's Office) dismissed their charges on the ground of insufficient evidence. Chae was sentenced to only a misdemeanor on neglect of duty with 1-year-in-jail and Nam received a 2-year-probation. The general public of S. Korea was outraged over the verdict and calls for a thorough investigation into the death of the 23-month-old baby boy. More than 10000 people registered as a member of the website ( to support the bereaved family and advocate for child health and safety in S. Korea.

  • Peritonitis Can Be Avoided Protect Your Catheter! You are most at risk when doing a cap exchange. Here is a technique that I used when I was doing PD. I believe this technique helped me avoid getting peritonitis in the 5 years that I did PD. Step one: With a new cap or drain tube in your left or right hand, whichever you are most comfortable with, twist the cap off and in the reverse motion twist a new cap on. Remember, the quicker you can do your cap exchange, the less exposure your catheter is to the open elements in the air, thus avoiding infections Please consult with your medical team before implementing any of the tips and techniques presented here on our website and videos and discuss the best way to sanitize your environment while doing your exchange.
  • FIP Rivalta test.wmv Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a leading infectious cause of death in the cat, especially affecting purebred cats and cats in rescue environments anywhere a lot of cats are kept indoors. No matter what any laboratory or manufacturer of test kits claims, there is no single test for FIP diagnosis is a challenge to even the most competent veterinary clinician and involves following a series of steps on an algorithm (free to download from ). FIP can present as effusive (wet) or non-effusive (dry). This film shows one step in the work up of an effusion in a suspect wet FIP case. To perform a Rivalta test, take 10 mls of water (must be at room temperature), add 2-3 drops of 8% acetic acid (ordinary clear/white vinegar) and carefully layer a drop of the effusion into it. If the effusion dissipates like a wisp of smoke in air the Rivalta test is negative and the cat is 97% not likely to have FIP. If, however, the effusion hangs from the surface in a globule, then slowly floats down like a jellyfish, the Rivalta test is positive. A positive Rivalta test means that the cat is 86% likely to have FIP (ie 5 of 6 cats with a positive Rivalta test do have FIP, so clearly other tests need to be performed to be more certain of the diagnosis). • Pathogenesis of Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) - the infection of the monocyte The key event in the development of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is the infection of the monocyte (a white blood cell) by feline coronavirus (FCoV). From the moment of infection of the monocyte, the cat's fate hangs on whether or not that monocyte can contain the virus and eventually defeat it, or whether the virus wins, and begins replicating within the monocyte. In this animation, we depict the latter. We show how the virus hijacks the immune system, leading to an inflammatory sequence of events which results in a pyogranuloma forming around a blood vessel. In the film we show the development of acute FIP, where there is a lot of virus, many blood vessels affected, and the resulting leakage from damaged blood vessels causes the clinical signs of effusive FIP -- ascites, thoracic effusion, pericardial effusion. In non-effusive FIP the course is more chronic: fewer blood vessels are affected, the cat's immune system tries harder to contain the infection, leading to larger pyogranulomata and the clinical signs of chronic inflammation and relating to the organ(s) containing the pyogranulomas. The website and You Tube channel are mainly aimed at postgraduate veterinarians and undergraduate veterinary students, to supply information which is difficult to source elsewhere and to enable free online continuing professional development. • Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) Is treatment available? FIP is one of the conronaviruses and can, in its initial stages, look like a routine cold, mild fever or diarrhea. Its insidious and comes in several forms. The most common form is the wet form in which the cats abdomen fills up with a sticky, yellow honey like fluid. Young kittens may look like they have a full belly after eating too much or it could be chalked up to roundworms
