- Herculaneum, House of the Corinthian Atrium This house lies at the far east end of the most southerly east-west street in Herculaneum. The fauces entrance corridor leads to a hybrid atrium which has a hugely disproportionate impluvium surrounded by columns. In short, this is really a small peristyle and serves as a kind of hybrid atrium-peristyle. In this respect it resembles the House of Apuleius at Ostia (see a film of that house under my user-name) and shows that in a constrained setting this was a convenient solution. Scarcely noticed by most visitors its hybrid nature is also largely ignored in textbooks.

The house begins with a conventional atrium but soon leads into a tiny peristyle and adjacent dining room which overlook the garden with its two c***s, paintings, pergolae, fountains and tanks. - Herculaneum. The Samnite House The 'Samnite House' at Herculaneum is one of the 'old' houses. It went through many phases, all of which saw its original size being cut down. The peristyle was sold off and abosrbed into a new house next door. An upstairs level was created with a balcony to look down over the huge atrium (hall) but the balcony and its columns were filled in so that the new level could be partitioned off as a separate apartment. The house ended up with its huge original hall but only a few small rooms around it. The Samnite House is prescribed content for the UK-based OCR examination board's A-level paper Cities of Roman Italy (CC6).
- Pompeii. House of Venus in a Seashell Pompeii's House of Venus in a Seashell (Region II, Insula 3). This was once a standard atrium house but the tablinum was removed to allow greater emphasis on the peristyle. The main feature of the house is its paintings, climaxing in the lurid mural of Venus lounging in a seashell on the south wall of the peristyle. Because it's Roman people often seem very impressed by this painting but to modern tastes it is not only garish but actually not particularly well-executed. Venus's right leg, for example, looks like a Jurassic sauropod's neck and head - this would explain why one of the cupids is looking at it in a rather perplexed fashion. Nevertheless, the house provides a good opportunity to experience the Pompeian house's colourful and heavy decor so much in vogue at the time Vesuvius erupted.

- Split In Your Pocket - Diocletian's Palace (Dioklecijanova palača) Split In Your Pocket editor Kristina Kovač explores the palace of Roman emperor Diocletian, Split's most important landmark. Construction began in 293 and was completed in ten years and utilized a variety of materials from all around the region, including white stone shipped from the island of Brač to sphinxes transported all the way from Egypt. Diocletian's palace has become the quintessential 'living museum,' as modern shops and citizens live and work inside the walls of the ancient palace complex. The part of the palace known as "the basement" was built during the reign of Diocletian to support the apartments placed above it and, until 1956, was unexplored and cluttered up with the detritus of thousands of years of history. Now, it's been cleaned and opened for visitors. Because it mirrors the floor plan of the original imperial living quarters, a visit to the basement can help visitors envision the layout of the palace. And, because exploring the depths of ancient palaces is difficult work, the steps leading up and out of the northern end of the basement to the Peristyle can be a perfect escape. - LA Coliseum The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a large outdoor sports stadium in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California at Exposition Park that has hosted two Olympics and is home to the University of Southern California Trojans football team. It is located next to the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena adjacent to the campus of the University of Southern California (USC). The stadium is owned by the State of California and is currently being leased (and managed) by the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission. The Coliseum was declared a National Historic Landmark on July 27, 1984, the day before the opening ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games Coliseum is now primarily the home of the USC Trojan football team. During the recent stretch of its success in football, most of USC's regular home games, especially the alternating games with rivals UCLA and Notre Dame, attract a capacity 92000 person crowd, although they regularly drew far less during the 1990s. The current official capacity of the Coliseum is 92516. The Coliseum Commission also rents the Coliseum to various events, including international soccer games, musical concerts and other large outdoor events. Concurrently, the commission is negotiating a new lease with the state after the 48-year lease expired in December 2005. - Rick Johnson's Epic Speech -- World Supercross Finals In the 1985 World Supercross Finals at the LA Coliseum, the top two finishers in each heat race were supposed to start the Main Event in a second row behind the slower qualifiers. This led to faster riders sandbagging to get a front row start. Into this controversy stepped a young Ricky Johnson who summoned the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. and Rocky Balboa to deliver one of the greatest speeches in human (or at least motocross) history. I didn't include what happened in the final heat race between RJ's interview and his speech when Jeff Ward hid behind the peristyle, out of sight from the fans, to go from 1st to 3rd.

- The Central Courtyard or Peristyle at Villa Kerylos, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer Villa Kerylos is a recreation of a noble dwelling from the 2nd century BC on the Greek island of Delos. The work Kerylos means halcyon or Kingfisher (a bird of good omen) in Greek. Théodore Reinach (1860-1928), a distinguished scholar and Hellenist, built the villa which was designed by the Italian architect Emmanuel Pontremoli. The villa was built around a central courtyard and surrounded by a garden with a selection of plants found in Greece including olive, carob and pine trees, cypresses, irises and myrtle. The central courtyard was an essential part of an ancient Greek dwelling as it was a place where air and light circulated freely. A water basin found in the center is a sign of life while the surrounding walls are filled with frescoes depicting mythological scenes and shell designs.

- Pompeii. House of the Menander I.10.4 The House of the Menander at Pompeii is so-called because of a painting of the Greek playwright. The house lies close to the theatre in central southern Pompeii and is one of the town's biggest though you would never guess from the outside. It is built round key visual axes, one of which is the view from the fauces entrance passageway right through the house and across the peristyle. The house was modified and enlarged over a long period of time and has been the subject of a recent massive programme of ***ysis and restoration. Despite this, it is still not open to the public and has to be accessed through a special permit from the Soprintendenza. The house is part of the prescribed content for the UK-based OCR examination board's A-level paper in Classical Civilisation called Cities of Roman Italy (CC6). A huge silver treasure hoard was found here by excavators, and this is now in Naples Museum. Circumstantial evidence has linked the house to the family of Nero's wife Poppaea but this is uncertain. However, there can be no question that the house was owned at the very least by one of Pompeii's most prominent citizens, either a man of the decurial class or an extremely wealthy freedman.
- Herculaneum, House of the Grand Portal This house in Herculaneum lies immediately next to the Samnite House. It seems that at some point in the latter house's life, its peristyle garden area was sold or partitioned off to create another property. The House of the Grand or Great Portal was built there, complete with its extravagant entrance. The Samnite House's peristyle wasn't demolished but absorbed into the walls of the new house. The columns can be clearly seen today, embedded in the walls.
- 5. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous: Houses and Villas at Pompeii Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner discusses domestic architecture at Pompeii from its beginnings in the fourth and third centuries BC to the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. She describes the plan of the ideal domus italica and features two residences that conform to that layout. She then presents the so-called Hellenized domus that incorporates elements of Greek domestic architecture, especially the peristyle court with columns. The primary example is the famous House of the Faun with its tetrastyle atrium, double peristyles, and floor mosaic of the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius of Persia at Issus, a Roman copy of an original Greek painting. She concludes by highlighting the suburban Villa of the Mysteries and notes the distinction between plans of Roman houses and those of Roman villas. Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2009.
