OIL PASTEL DEMO MARSH LANDSCAPE - GARY GARRETT PAINTING This one is an 11x14 Oil Pastel drawing using Cray-Pas, Mungyo, and Loew Cornell oil pastels on Canson acid free paper #501 "Tobacco" color paper. This drawing was made from sketches made last summer around St. Augustine's marshlands off the intracoastal waterway south of the fort, and north of Matanzas. It was a nice change of pace from my other recent paintings. I use a technique that layers color on color, then smeared together... usually I would use a paper shading taper (tortillon) to smear it... but not having any right now, i had to use my "built-in" smear stick (my finger) LOL. It was fun to do a pastel again. The music is one of my originals, named "Timuquana" in honor and respect for the indians who first settled this area. I used my home-made cedar acoustic guitar and multitrack recorded on my GNX4 then downloaded to my computer. Hope you like it. It was time-lapsed using a Sony TRV25 in INTERVAL mode (1/2 second every 30 seconds). Speed painting - hens in pastel **best viewed in HD/HQ mode** Here are four of the hens that free range outside my studio, having a good old gossip. I just painted this for fun - how could I not, they're such great characters..............................It took 7 hours to complete. I used pastel pencils (all sorts of brands) on Fisher 400 sanded paper....................... To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. The background is in soft pastel sticks, the 'brush' looking thing I use on it at the start is a silicon 'colour shaper' tool: it blends the colours. The hens are done entirely with pastel pencils. The stick you can see some of the time is a Mahl stick, as used by signwriters. It's just to lean my hand on without smudging the work. I do sell my work and take portrait commissions in the UK (it's my living, so please don't ask for freebies!), more about that on my website for anyone interested.
