Due to their low boiling point, these drops levitate on a cushion of their own vapour. This property gives them a high mobility, as known more generally in such Leidenfrost situations. But liquid oxygen is also paramagnetic, and thus likely to be manipulated using a magnet. It is first shown that the shape of the drop can be modified by changing the drop/magnet distance; approaching the magnet acts as reinforcing gravity, so that the drops get flattened by this action. The transformation is of course reversible: as the magnet is withdrawn, the liquid recovers its quasi-spherical shape. Magnets can also be used to trap the oxygen drops. As they pass above a magnet, they slow down significantly, a consequence of their deformation: despite a very low friction, the vibrations induced by the drop deformations represent an important source of dissipation: below a well-defined velocity, drops can even be stopped in the magnetic trap. Quicker ones can be decelerated and then captured by series of magnets. Oberving the same events from the top reveals the complex shapes adopted by the liquid as it crosses the traps.

  • proslier_part2.mp4 The presence of magnetic impurities in native niobium oxides have been confirmed by Point contact spectroscopy (PCT), SQUID magnetometry and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). All niobium (Nb) samples displayed a small impurity contribution to the magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures which exhibited Curie-Weiss behavior, indicative of weakly coupled localized paramagnetic moments. By examining Nb samples with widely varying surface-to-volume ratios (rods, foils, wires, powders) it was found that the impurity contribution is correlated with surface area. Tunneling measurements which utilize the native oxide layers as barriers exhibit a zero-bias conductance peak which splits in a magnetic field more than 4T, consistent with the Appelbaum-Anderson model for spin flip tunneling. Viewed together, the experiments strongly suggest that the native oxides of Nb are intrinsically defective, and consistently exhibit localized paramagnetic moments, likely caused by oxygen vacancies in Nb2O5. The computation of the surface impedance (RS) in presence of magnetic impurities in the Shiba approximation reveals the saturation at low temperature of Rs, suggesting that magnetic impurities are responsible for the so-called residual resistance.

  • Liquid oxygen attracted by levitating magnet spheres In this video you can see two 8mm NdFeB N52 gold plated magnet spheres floating over a high temperature superconductor made of Yttrium-Barium-Copper-Oxide (YBCO). The superconductor was cooled down to -196°C with liquid nitrogen and is covered with ice and mist. To hold the magnet spheres absolutely upward an additional lifter magnet was used which is not visible in the images. It can be observed that droplets of liquid oxygen, which is paramagnetic, are attracted by the magnet spheres and evaporate abruptly on the surface of the lower sphere. The liquid oxygen accumulated on the surface of the superconductor while experimenting and was not additionally added. Furthermore you can see the mist vortexes which built up on the lower side of the magnet sphere. These vortexes consist mainly of water mist and evaporating nitrogen. This experiment shows a complex combination of superconduction, paramagnetism, diamagnetism, magnetism, thermo-dynamics and fluid dynamics. More at or http

  • Paramagnetism ParamagnetismParamagnetism is a property of objects exposed to the external magnetic field to magnetize acquiring a magnetic moment in the direction of the field. Thus, in any paramagnetic object (paramagnet) the effect of the magnetic field is supplemented by acquired magnetization. In this aspect, the paramagnetism is the opposite of the diamagnetism, where the magnetic moment acquired by the object under the effect of the magnetic field is oriented in the direction of the magnetic field strength. The term "paramagnetism" was introduced by Faraday in 1845. The scientist divided all the substances, apart from ferromagnetic ones into diamagnets and paramagnets. The paramagnetism is observed in substances, the particles of which, be it atoms, molecules, ions, or atom nuclei, posses their own magnetic moment. But when they are not exposed to the external magnetic field, such moments are chaotic, which is why the magnetization is equal to zero. When exposed to the external magnetic field, the magnetic moments of the paramagnet atoms are oriented towards the field, which results in a field surpassing the external one. The paramagnets are drawn into the magnetic field. When there is no external magnetic field, the paramagnetic is non-magnetized, because due to the heat motion the magnetic moments of the atoms are chaotic. Abstract The presence of magnetic impurities in native niobium oxides have been confirmed by Point contact spectroscopy (PCT), SQUID magnetometry and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). All niobium (Nb) samples displayed a small impurity contribution to the magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures which exhibited Curie-Weiss behavior, indicative of weakly coupled localized paramagnetic moments. By examining Nb samples with widely varying surface-to-volume ratios (rods, foils, wires, powders) it was found that the impurity contribution is correlated with surface area. Tunneling measurements which utilize the native oxide layers as barriers exhibit a zero-bias conductance peak which splits in a magnetic field more than 4T, consistent with the Appelbaum-Anderson model for spin flip tunneling. Viewed together, the experiments strongly suggest that the native oxides of Nb are intrinsically defective, and consistently exhibit localized paramagnetic moments, likely caused by oxygen vacancies in Nb2O5. The computation of the surface impedance (RS) in presence of magnetic impurities in the Shiba approximation reveals the saturation at low temperature of Rs, suggesting that magnetic impurities are responsible for the so-called residual resistance.
