  • Preparing Students for Ubiquitous Parallelism Pt. 1 of 6 Current trends in microprocessor design are fundamentally changing the way that performance is extracted from computer systems. The previous programming model for sequential uniprocessor execution is being replaced quickly with a need to write software for tightly-coupled shared memory multiprocessor systems. Both academicians and business leaders have challenged programmers to update their skill sets and their tools to effectively tackle software development for these newer platforms [1]. In addition, the availability of cheap processor cycles has created an explosion in capability for large data set computation. Applications in this category require programmers to strongly grasp the concepts of scaling parallelism. This new tack in computing towards ubiquitous parallelism raises several questions for computer science educators: How do we best prepare students for a world where parallel resources are always available? What role should parallel programming play in our curricula? What parallel programming concepts and skills are most important? What are the best ways in which to get students to learn them? Which are the most difficult for students to grasp? In this panel, we will discuss our experiences engaging with students, teachers, and researchers on the topic of parallel programming.   • Efficient System-Enforced Deterministic Parallelism Presented at the 9th USENIX Symposium on Operating Systems Design and Implementation (OSDI '10) held in Vancouver, BC, Canada, October 4-6, 2010. Paper authors: Amittai Aviram, Shu-Chun Weng, Sen Hu, and Bryan Ford, Yale University Abstract: Deterministic execution offers many benefits for debugging, fault tolerance, and security. Current methods of executing parallel programs deterministically, however, often incur high costs, allow misbehaved software to defeat repeatability, and transform time-dependent races into input- or path-dependent races without eliminating them. We introduce a new parallel programming model addressing these issues, and use Determinator, a proof-of-concept OS, to demonstrate the model's practicality. Determinator's microkernel API provides only "shared-nothing" address spaces and deterministic interprocess communication primitives to make execution of all unprivileged code—well-behaved or not—precisely repeatable. Atop this microkernel, Determinator's user-level runtime adapts optimistic replication techniques to offer a private workspace model for both thread-level and process-level parallel programing. This model avoids the introduction of read/write data races, and converts write/write races into reliably-detected conflicts. Coarse-grained parallel benchmarks perform and scale comparably to nondeterministic systems, on both multicore PCs and across nodes in a distributed cluster.

  • Preparing Students for Ubiquitous Parallelism Pt. 2 of 6 Prompted by the changing landscape and by active encouragement from our corporate partners, the Purdue University Department of Computer Sciences has created a Multicore Initiative to substantially increase the multicore content in our curriculum. The most innovative element of the Multicore Initiative is a course for first or second semester freshmen designed to teach the fundamentals of programming with concurrency integrated into as many topics as possible. The course fulfills our CS1 requirement but ranges a little beyond a typical CS1 course in difficulty. Students are eligible to enroll with either a strong high school background in programming or successful completion of our CS0 course. Our course is taught in Java, and all concurrency is based on threading. We have faced challenges in fitting both the traditional CS1 material and concurrent topics into our course. Because some programming experience is a prerequisite, we have accelerated the first month of Java fundamentals and left out some of the more obscure features of the language. Having no textbook which unites introductory programming with concurrency, we were forced to write our own. We are excited to share our experiences of wrestling with the design of this course for over a year and the results of teaching the course for the first time in fall 2008. The previous bottleneck can cause performance problems under certain circumstances: On systems with many CPUs, if the table schema has less partitions than there are CPUs, then not all the CPUs will be used to process the query. Some examples: On a 32-way box, a query over a 12-partition table (eg a sales table partitioned by month) will only use 12 threads (one on each of 12 CPUs). This means 20 CPUs are potentially idle. On a 4-way box, a query over a 12-partition table only accesses a single partition so will only use one thread (on one CPU). This means 3 CPUs are potentially idle. On tables that have skewed data such that one partition is much larger than another, the length of time the query takes to complete will be bounded by the single thread processing the largest partition. Google Tech Talks October 28, 2008 ABSTRACT This talk will begin with an overview of the Computer Systems group within the College of Engineering and IT at The Australian National University. These fall under the Themes of Bio-Engineering, Robotics, Advanced Runtime Systems, Performance ***ysis, Parallel Processing, Operating Systems. Depending on audience interest, projects under the latter three themes will be discussed in detail. These include: OpenMP for Contemporary Clusters: state-of-the-art for distributed shared memory based systems, the handling of heterogeneity and utilization of advanced networking technologies (Infinband). High Performance Numerical Computing on Service-Oriented Architectures: this work involves the extension of the Symphony programming paradigm (Platform Computing), originally developed for financial applications running on enterprise grids. The desirable properties of this model include inherent load balancing in a heterogeneous environment, fault tolerance and relative simplicity of programming. The challenge arises in enabling compute tasks to effectively communicate with low overheads, while retaining most of these advantages.
