  • Barefoot Kajira - Teasing Tarmac "Indeed, teasing occupies a fine and fleeting line between aggression and play. The aggressive aspect of it consists of criticism that threatens a person's 'face' or desired social identity. But since the driving force behind teasing is a yearning to maintain harmonious social relationships, teasers engage in regressive action—they deploy humorous or playful tactics signaling that the criticism should not be taken as a condemnation. Exaggerated tone of voice, elongated vowels, unusual facial expressions, a little laugh just before or after the tease—a range of more or less subtle 'paralinguistic' markers remind the teasee that they are loved despite the flaw—and maybe even more for it." Humans send and interpret such signals almost entirely subconsciously. John Borg attests that human communication consists of 93 percent body language and paralinguistic cues, while only 7% of communication consists of words themselves;[1] however, Albert Mehrabian, the researcher whose 1960s work is the source of these statistics, has stated that this is a misunderstanding of the findings[2] (see Misinterpretation of Mehrabian's rule). Others assert that "Research has suggested that between 60 and 70 percent of all meaning is derived from nonverbal behavior."[3] Body language may provide clues as to the attitude or state of mind of a person. For example, it may indicate aggression, attentiveness, boredom, relaxed state, pleasure, amusement, and intoxication, among many other cues.

  • ***s Sorry if the title is misleading, I'm thinking about how the visual image and and other paralinguistic effects modify the way in which I/we engage with the conceptual content of videos. The most obvious example would, I guess, be way that women are looked at and how this looking is very evidently felt (and read) as a distraction to the main conceptual event. I suspect there are complementary effects happening with other presentations but that the effects aren't so obvious. For example, I tend to find myself affected by the authority that some (usually male) presenters exhibit to the extent that I am more inclined to accept the content. In this case there is still a distraction going on but it is more covert and unconscious. Rather than my conscious attention being drawn south away from the words under the influence of mammary gravity it is my critical faculty that is diverted away from the content. Zizek
