It was a beautiful morning and we started the hike with around 200 other tourists (500 a day are allowed on the trail but now it is "slow" season, being rainy). The first day was good, challenging, but beautiful and our first campsite was halfway up a mountain in a little flat area with two tarantulas. It is only possible now to hike the Inca trail with a licensed guide and you obtain these through one of many travel companies. Unfortunately the porters are not paid very well. We found out that of the $80 the company charges, the porter receives $40 but has to pay $10 park entrance ($65 for tourists) and so receives only $30 for three days of hauling 25 kilos (about 60 pounds) up and down the steepest mountains you have ever seen for 4 days. I never saw one backpack among them, they tie their loads on with rope or torn cloth. I never saw one wearing hiking shoes either and tennis shoes were rare. Most wore these common cheap sandals that are made out of rubber. I bought acouple of peso sandwiches that turned out ot be vary tasty indeed. I think it was pork, a little fatty but full of flavour as I put my gastrointestinal system to the test again. I am in the upstairs room of a colonial house that has 20 foot ceilings. It is typical of where I have been staying with the exception of Julio's place that was much nicer but can still be considered very basic. I am right in the center of historical Trinidad with cobblestones outside the door and tourist stores all over the place. I took a walk as the sun was setting to see if I could get lost here. The answer is yes but I didn't venture too far because getting lost at night takes on a whole different perspective. I visited 3-4 artist studios and was very impressed with the work they do in oils. The oils of the old cars are very tempting but I will wait a bit because I am here for 5 days.
