  • Managing Oxidative Stress with Dietary Antioxidants My name is Wendell Knehans. I work in the Product Management area focused on antioxidants, enzymes, and a few other products. Dietary antioxidants are a very important cog in a multi-product solution to solve oxidative stress in the animals' systems. Taking a human ***ogy, high performance athletes, or people exposed to extreme conditions, can develop oxidative stress in their system, which is an imbalance between antioxidants and the level of free radicals in a human system. We know today that various antioxidants in our food, like blueberries and green tea, can be part of a very healthy diet to get the most performance out of our bodies. I use high performance athlete because we're, many times, trying to reach the physical limits as high performance athletes. The same could be true for animals operating in various situations. They could be in oxidative stress because we're challenging the limits of their productive capability. Also, they could be exposed to heat, from a temperature perspective, in certain climates. Also, it could be triggered off by disease or by dietary deficiencies. So a number of things can cause the body to get out of balance between free radicals and the amount of antioxidants in the system to keep that in balance. That's the state we call oxidative stress. When you have oxidative stress, what that causes the body to do is invest energy in solving that for maintenance and resolving that issue as opposed to having that extra energy in the feed go ...

  • Ammonium nitrate and oxidative properties of nitrous oxide Ammonium nitrate was isolated by several purification methods from Florin 6 fertilizer, dried and placed in a small Erlenmeyer flask. It was carefully heated over a steel mesh and melted to produce nitrous oxide which was then washed with regular water and collected in beakers. Oxidative properties of nitrous oxide were shown on a glowing wooden stick, burning sulphur, ethanol and propanone applied on cotton, and steel wool. If you lack laboratory skills and are not familiar with chemistry, please DO NOT attempt to reproduce the experiment. Do not heat ammonium nitrate nor fertilizers. Do not inhale the gases. The reaction CAN turn into a detonation. This experiment does not show the safety measures, but that doesn't mean there were none.

  • Oxidative Stress on Fruit and Your Body Things "They" Didn't Tell You There are many things you weren't told growing up..., about life on this planet, or who is in control of it. But you live here anyway, and that's a fact. There is some crazy stuff going on all around the world but there is no way you are ever gonna know it all, and that's a fact. Now what about your health, do you know everything you should? Are the doctors really trying to keep you sick? Is your food really drained of nutrition? It's funny how a species like the human can go from living off the land, and eating healthy to city dwellers obsessed with medications and drugs. Okay, I am going to go back to school and talk about something They did tell you. They most likely showed you how the inside of an apple will quickly turn yellow, then brown, when exposed to air. Well oxygen or air does that to you too. Not always on the outside where you can see it, but inside as well. In you body and in your cells. The body needs oxygen everywhere and it circulates throughout the blood stream and travels all through your body. This is where most of us stop in what we know about the oxygen in our bodies. It has to be there so it's a good thing to have healthy lungs and breath clean air.... Reeeally? There is the other stuff They don't always tell us. Stuff like, exercise can dangerous if it is creating more oxidative stress than the body can handle. But exercise is healthy and good for you... isn't it?? "The first suggestion that physical exercise results ...

  • Oxidative Phosphorylation This course is part of a series taught by Kevin Ahern at Oregon State University on General Biochemistry. For more information about online courses go to ecampus.oregonstate.edu 1. For every oxidation, there is an equal and Loss of elecrons by one molecule means gain of them by another one. Oxidation is a process that involves the loss of electrons. Reduction is a process that involves the gain of electrons. 2. Electrons are carried to the electron transport system in the mitochondria by NADH and FADH2. 3. Mitochondria are the site of electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation. 4. Electrons from NADH enter the electron transport system through complex I. 5. Electrons from FADH2 enter the electron transport system through complex II. 6. Coenzyme Q (CoQ) accepts a pair of electrons from either complex I or complex II and passes electrons singly to cytochrome c through complex III. Thus, coenzyme Q acts as a "traffic cop" for electrons. 8. Oxygen is thus the terminal electron acceptor and is a limiting compound during periods of heavy exercise. 9. If oxygen is not available, electrons will NOT pass through the electron transport system and NADH and FADH2 will not be reoxidized. For these reasons, the citric acid cycle will not run either. This is part of metabolic control. 10. Several compounds inhibit electron transport - rotenone (an insecticide) and amytal block all action of Complex I. Antimycin A blocks all action of Complex III. Cyanide, azide, and carbon ...
  • OXPHOS - Oxidative Phosphorylation 3Dme presents a look at OXPHOS - Oxidative Phosphorylation to help you visualise this complex process. Through a fascinating process called oxidative phosphorylation, oxygen is used by the mitochondria to absorb electrons & help generate energy. This video uses beautiful, high definition 3D visualisation to take a look inside the human body to follow the path the oxygen molecules take from the in breath, osmosis through the arterial membrane, bound by haemoglobin in red blood cells, to reach the mitochondria. Once inside the mitochondria, the powerhouse of all cells, we demonstrate how oxygen is used to produce energy. This process includes the oxidation of macronutrients, electron carriers such as NADH, the electron transport chain & the cytochrome oxidase complex. Creative imagery has been used in this video to facilitate your understanding of the process of oxidative phosphorylation. We welcome your feedback & suggestions re: future topics you would like to see 3Dme produce for the upcoming App Video Catalogue.
