Oryx - Fauna Clips An Oryx is one of three or four large antelope species of the genus Oryx, typically having long straight almost upright or swept back horns. Two or three of the species are native to Africa, with a fourth native to the Arabian Peninsula. Small populations of several oryx species, such as the "Scimitar Oryx", exist in Texas and New Mexico, USA as captive populations on wild game ranches. The profile of an oryx with perfectly symmetrical horns, especially viewed in silhouette, appears to have only a single horn, which has led to speculation that it may be the source of Unicorn myths[verification needed]. An Arabian Oryx named 'Orry' served as an unofficial mascot of the 2006 Asian Games held at Doha. Oryx eyes are considered beautiful by Arabs of Arabia and are usually used to describe the beauty of women's eyes. In popular culture, a skit on Sesame Street shows six oryx walking by while a group of kids apparently count them. In an episode of Planet Earth, oryxes are trying to chase lions away. In Margaret Atwood's sci-fi dystopia Oryx and Crake, one of the primary characters names herself after the animal. Oryx, along with Lions, Zebras, Leopards, Ostriches, Capuchin Monkeys and an Elephant, can be seen in Shawn Levy's children's movie Night at the Museum, wherein taxidermic models of them at the Museum of Natural History are brought to life each night by an ancient Egyptian curse.

BowHunting Africa Gemsbok / Oryx Hunt On this hunt, I was sitting in a blind looking over a mineral lick. My PH Reneir was concerned about the wind, so he burned some cow patties to cover our scent. About an hour into the hunt a nice Kudu bull and some cows came by, but I already had one on the ground so he got to walk. A little while later, a group of Gemsbok caught us by surprise. I shot the bull at 25yds right in the shoulder. Because of a slight quartering to shot angle and his reaction, the broadhead skipped off his fron legbone and went rearward into his liver. We tracked him thru the afternoon almost 2 miles and found him the next morning. The trackers were amazing to follow thru the brush. Baby Oryx at Knowsley Safari Park One of the new arrivals for Knowsley Safari Park in 2011 is a little Oryx calf. The striking and attractive scimitar-horned oryx was once widely distributed through much of north Africa. However the advent of four-wheel drive vehicles and modern firearms contributed to a very rapid decline in animals through much of its range and often extinctions at a local level. Extinction would have occurred without the introduction of captive bred animals to the Boo-Hedma National Park in Tunisia during 1985. Now all wild Oryx are related to captive bred animals. Scimitar-horned oryx horns can grow to 1.5m (5ft) and are used for defence and establishing dominance. Re-introduction continues but is not possible in many areas of this magnificent animals former range due to war and poverty.

Oryx at Samburu Reserve, Kenya This video clip of oryx was taken at Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya on 25 January 2008. Our party stayed at Elephant Bedroom Camp on the Ewaso Nyiro River. With only 12 tents, this luxurious camp is surrounded by beautiful shrubs and doum palms. Furnished in a rustic African style, Elephant Bedroom offers all of the comforts one would expect of a luxury tented camp, such as flush toilets and running hot water in the tents. We found the game viewing at Samburu to be very good!
