  • Wholefoods Opera BSO On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, shoppers at Whole Foods Market in Harbor East Baltimore received an unusual surprise. Singers from Washington National Opera's (WNO) Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program disguised as Whole Foods employees were embedded throughout the store. All of a sudden, the introduction to Giuseppe Verdi's "Libiamo" or (Drinking Song) from La Traviata blasted over the loudspeaker. Then those same "employees" broke into song and performed the entire opera scene for confused and amused Whole Foods customers. This non-traditional performance is part of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's ongoing mission to make classical music more accessible. The BSO and WNO thank Whole Foods Markets for partnering for this event.

  • Carmen - Royal Opera House The Spanish heat and gypsy passion of Carmen take to the stage as The Royal Opera presents the first revival of Francesca Zambello's vibrant production with Tanya McCallin's richly coloured designs. It's a great stage recreation of the sun-drenched and sultry world of 19th-century Spain, with its ranks of soldiers and crowds of peasants, its gypsies and bullfighters, its spectacle and its deadly, white-hot emotions. Star tenor Marcelo Álvarez is Don José, the soldier she forces to murderous jealousy over her new affair with the bullfighter Escamillo, played by Kyle Ketelsen. It's a perfect cast to bring alive the ***y solos, rousing choruses, impassioned arias and Spanish dances of one of the most famously tuneful of all operas and one of the most enduringly popular works in the entire repertory. A Royal Opera House production

  • Walküre preview from San Francisco Opera A powerful god finds himself torn by conflicting loyalties in the second installment of Wagner's majestic Ring cycle, which features the famous "Ride of the Valkyries." Director Francesca Zambello gives this epic tale of an emotionally volatile father and his disobedient children a distinctly American touch while honoring its mythic roots. Donald Runnicles, whose command of Wagner's music "offers one of the city's most reliable musical thrills" (San Francisco Chronicle), conducts a world-class cast including two stunning sopranos: Nina Stemme, the sublime Senta of San Francisco Opera's The Flying Dutchman (2004), and Eva-Maria Westbroek, whose Wagnerian vocalism was called "outstanding" by London critics. Mark Delavan, hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as a "robust and commanding" Wotan in the 2008 Ring cycle opera Das Rheingold, continues the journey. "Prepare to be utterly amazed," raved the Washington DC Metro Weekly. "This is a supremely cohesive operatic and theatrical experience, a tremendously absorbing ride in which we thrill to Wagner's brilliant, evocative score while realizing just how relevant the work is to modern audiences. Time will fly like a Valkyrie on the wind."

  • Madame Butterfly (1995) - Love Duet - Opera Movie w/SubTitles Madame Butterfly (1995) Directed by Frédéric Mitterrand. Ying Huang - Cio-Cio-San (Mme Butterfly) Richard Troxell .. BF PINKERTON, (Lieutenant, USN) Directed by Frédéric Mitterrand 1995. Madama Butterfly (Madame Butterfly) is an opera in three acts (originally two acts) by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. Puccini based his opera in part on the short story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long, which was dramatized by David Belasco. Puccini also based it on the novel Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti. According to American scholar Arthur Groos, the opera was based on events that actually occurred in Nagasaki in the early 1890s. The opera is set in the city of Nagasaki. Japan's best-known opera singer Tamaki Miura won international fame for her performances as Cio-Cio San and her statue, together with that of Puccini, can be found in Nagasaki's Glover Garden. The opera is a staple of the standard operatic repertoire by companies around the world and is the most-performed opera in the United States, where it ranks as Number 1 in Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.

Featuring the greatest Wagnerian soprano of the twentieth century, Birgit Nilsson, as soloist, the concert provided an electrifying opening for the iconic building. Here is an excerpt from the concert, which for the first time is now available on CD and bonus DVD from ABC Classics.
