  • Re: Making Time for Nothing (objectivity, impossibility, and pure being = nothing?) Three points of interest in reply to ProfessorAnton's video: 1. No phenomena given through smelling, hearing, or tasting alone, can by itself be an object 'in' time and space (as all objects must be spatial and temporal). That's impossible, since without vision and/or haptic/tactile coupling these senses are unable to provide us with an understanding of their cause(s), and the perception of objects always implies causal relations in space. This is why causal thinking and objectivist thinking necessarily go hand in hand. 2. Congruent with Corey's last video, 'possibility' is a word/concept permeated with negation. To say that "X, Y, & Z are possible" is to say: "X, Y, & Z will happen, or not" ie XY and Z are possible as possibilities. So X, Y, and Z are positive possibilities, but qua possibilities, necessarily come pre-loaded with nothingness, since a possibility is an occurrence which either will happen, or will not happen (it's possible). But what about IMpossibility? Impossibility, it seems, is that which is NOT a possibility. This is like nothingness^2, since possibility, as we saw above, already includes nothing, but now this is NOT a possibility. Impossibility needs the notion of possibility which already includes the 'not', and yet it is not a possibility. So impossibility involves two negations. And yet, we do not here have a double negative (not not possible, which is simple 'possible'). What is the status of this second-order or uber-nothingness ...

  • Objectivity Video 2 Here I read off the possible definitions for objectivity by covering each of the fields in which it shows up. Science has a different level of objectivity, since experiments are so complex and specific. By precisely describing their methods, materials and approaches scientists achieve a high level of objectivity. Would that philosophers and politicians could reach the lowest branches of science's great objective tree.

  • defining subjectivity and objectivity (1 of 2) I like wukdar, but I respond in an appropriate tone to his admonition. I really hate when people refer to dictionary definitions as philosophical authorities... make by aproximators... do you think that a scientist goes to a dictionary for a definition of relativity? of mass even? Hell no, the dictionary author is asking them and getting it only part wrong, hopefully. The point, you wukdar are MISSING the point, that is usually the case when one has the WTF? experience so profoundly. Subjectivism does not always mean dreams count as reality, that's bull***, it's really the fact that our picture of reality turns out to be just a picture, mixed with illusion. WUKDAR! It is about IMPROVING the estimates of which is "real" and which is illusion. Your illogical deep confidence about the "obviousness" just means you'll miss catching some illusion. You can know reality without thinking absolutely. That's why science uses THEORY, not "ABSOLUTE INVOLATE RULES". We call them laws sometimes, fine, but we THINK about them as theories. a reply to this: ---- This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License by Rare Earth Productions

I will be glad when #16 is finished completing section #2 and I can get to work on the final 8 episodes which should be all happiness and glory. This one I'm VERY fond of! I'm almost done with the case against religion. Next I get to move on to the materialist version of the same thing and take socialism head on. I will do my best to produce #15 soon!

  • Space of Knowing - Objectivity and Subjectivity Our tendency to conceive of knowledge (or knowing) using spatial metaphors, such that 'facts' are treated as kind of objects somehow out there in space that can be 'grasped' etc. has a number of interesting features. Specifically, the overall schema which equates knowledge with the occupation of space allows for an understanding of the distinction between objective and subjective forms of knowledge. This distinction is found in the writings of Michael Polanyi, David Perkins, and others.

  • Bill Moyers Journal | Buying the War | End of Objectivity In this excerpt from the Apr.25, 2007 'Buying the War' broadcast of Bill Moyers Journal, Bill Moyers interviews Walter Pincus, of the Washington Post, who describes the end of objective journalism -- "truth squading" or fact-checking -- at the Post during the early Reagan years. This brief segment clarifies how we've devolved to a world of "he said/he said" coverage of issues, and highlights one particular practitioner of this modern "journalistic" practice, Tim Russert. (Consider Pincus' comments, and you'll understand why people have flocked to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Their content often derives from contrasting how a politician's words/actions differ from their past words/actions -- truth squading with a comic flair, really.)

  • Subjectivity (and the stuff in between) Objectivity (Re: Re; Fluck Yourselfs - Pyrrho314) I don't know about you but I keep finding myself flopping toward some ideal version of empirical objectivity, in which some abstract transcendent laws have to operate equally on all phenomena all the time, or conversely toward a silly subjectivity that says that the only standard by which to measure is the narrow criteria of my own subjectivity. I'm sure reality is more complicated than that. Most of the moral etc decisions that are made happen in the context of particular criteria appropriate to the kind of entity that is being discussed. Different moral criteria exist that govern relations between humans as between humans and other animals, or between humans and non-living entities, or between one group of humans and another. (I'm including humans in all of these combinations because I don't think it makes sense to talk about other animals, or indeed inanimate objects as conforming to any set of 'morals').
