  • Los Pinos Peak, Cleveland National Forest Did a late spring hike to the top of Los Pinos Pk one fine Saturday. Started on the west side of the mountains at the Trabuco Creek trailhead. Hiked up the Trabuco Creek trail to Munhall Saddle at the Main Divide trail, then attacked the scree slope directly to the west. This is the Los Pinos trail and it is a ridge trail along the backbone of the Santa Ana mountains. The peak had great views, though the steepness and loose scree made footing a challenge at time. There were SO many insects up there! Clouds of ladybugs and non-biting flies. The flies were the worst, as they loved getting in your face and ears. You can see and hear the bugs in the video. It was crazy! Forgive my breathing, I forget how sensitive my camera's microphone is.

Was sure I had picked up bed bugs at the Castillo plus the rooms are less nice there. It's fiesta time, the town patron San Diego's bash, so there are processions & local ant dances, though not today unfortunately! However it was the anniversary of the school so the kids got dressed up & paraded the streets, which was fun. Did see the saint being carried round the streets from the church next morning. Don't travel on Sundays in Nica - I discovered hardly any buses run & no-one can tell you when they will!! Having got up early to breakfast prior to the 7.40 bus, found there was only instant coffee available at that time, no chance & getting & eating food as the restaurant opened late and then no bus either - not a happy bunny. Locals promised an 8.00am one - nada! By 9.15 still no coffee or breakfast or bus! Finally at 9.20 one rocks up. No coffee or restaurants at the dock in Moyogalpa while waiting for the 11am ferry but did find one tiny place cooking sopa on a wood BBQ but it wouldn't be ready untill 10.30. Didn't fancy my chances of getting down all of the huge bowl (think Wagamama bowl size - massive!) of soup with massive chunks of yuca, squash, chicken & chicken/masa dumplings but was going to have a damned good go! Really hit the spot & at $1.50 you can't complain ...

TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Modernnomad67's travel blog entry: "We camped for two nights along the shores of beautiful Tsaagan Nuur Lake inside a national park centered around a volcanic region. Our campsite was close enough to hike to the relatively low Khorgo Volcano crater. Surrounded by impressive lava flows and very accessible, Khorgo is actually lower than many of the peaks around it but still provided impressive views of the surrounding lakes and volcanic scenery. While the crater itself was impressive, I personally found getting there hiking through the flows of lava rock to be the most fun. The adventurous might try extending the Buddhist tradition of walking clockwise three times (or 108 times, the other lucky number in Buddhism) around a mountaintop roadside shrine, tossing a rock onto the pile, and making a wish to their visit to the volcano crater, but I found one time around which I mistakenly did in a counter-clockwise direction to be plenty for me, especially since the brilliant blue morning skies had turned threatening by noon. Although many of our campsites in Kazakhstan, Siberia, and Mongolia were in beautiful locations, bush camping isn't all fun and games. It's actually a lot of work. Besides putting up your tent every night you move camp and taking it down in the morning and cooking ...
  • Gnats Swarming Under Trees It was a cold, sunny October day. Gnats are mosquitoes but they never bite people in this part of the country. Once, when I was in Switzerland, I had to ask people what the insects were that had been biting me. I'd never seen anything like them close up. They were mosquitoes and although I grew up seeing gnats swarming in the summer I never knew they were like mosquitoes. Probably the success of gnats helps to keep out varieties of mosquitoes that spread malaria. Could non-biting gnats be spread where mosquitoes do cause malaria and help to keep them under control there or would they start biting people in such climates and spread malaria? Or would they die from the heat? What if geneticists modified them to have a bright colour so people knew they were the good ones? After I wrote this I found that there have been trials with a mosquito whose larva is predatory towards other mosquito larvae. That one is Toxorhynchites rutilis rutilis and both male and female are nectar feeders - they do not feed on blood. They are metallic purple, green and blue, with white markings. They have been used in field trials against mosquitoes that live in small temporary pools and tyres with pockets of water etc. Trials were quite successful though the last results quoted were from the end of the 1980s. Toxorhynchites rutilis rutilis is one of the many types of mosquito found in the USA. I have to wonder if there are more non-biting mosquitoes in the world that might help to control others in ...

  • 184 Orange Plus Distortion Warning: Loud Audio Sorry bout the 'no' shirt. Alot of distortion in this video. This is how I find something that works with the recording environment. As many know, the EQ is seriuosly modified, the presence is cut, the treble toned back, and Tone knob on the guitar is 50-100%, constantly adjusted. First 3 minutes recorded w/headphones. I do NOT like headphones because they destroy the recording, things sound thin and weak. The MP-1 is 10,10 gained. The Orange is 75% gained. Mostly just rocking the Reverb in/out between lead and rhythm sections. Real time control over the recording effects. Ch1 & Ch2 of the amp switched at 0:16. Ch2 is much warmer, thicker. Tone knob adjustments change from thin-thick. During this time, the Reverb and Delays are mixed between 10%-100%. During the 'dissonant chord' the effects are 100%, during the rhythm the effects are mixed down as low as 10%, but not always. 3:09 ends headphone section. 3:10 Feedback is achieved by cranking the monitor speakers. This is how I EQ the tone, according to those speakers. The EQ is leveled, no punches to any frequencies during this stage. Stereo Delay, Reverb, Flange effects used with volume swells, a Rush 'By-Tor' progression. Swells are used to fluctuate the guitars gain level, cleaning up the distortion for some of the Flanged effects, trying to find something warm, non-biting. Since the effects add highs, the Tone knob is dialed back, or Ch2 of the amp is used to mute most of the higher frequencies ...

  • Alligator Clicker Training.AVI This is us (Eduardo Fernandez, Flavio Morrissiey) beginning the click-food pairing process, and then very quickly moving into using the bridging device followed by food to shape "calm", non-biting behaviors. I (Eduardo) is delivering the clicks and filming, while Flavio maintains the stick that functions as the line to not bite/cross, as well as delivering the food. Obviously, I was a bit anxious to be working in near-waist deep water with an almost seven foot alligator, and with 50+ other 6'+ alligators swimming all around us. Nonetheless, there was only one blatant error, and the alligator appeared to learn the basics of our desired contingency, even in just a few minutes. End result: alligators are fun to clicker train!
