Episode 4: Test for Nitrite Ion Hello Chemists. Today I will be performing the test for Nitrite. Off Camera I mixed Potassium Nitrate and Sugar in a 50/50 Ratio. I ignited the mixture and dissolved the burn residue in water. This was then filtered to remove undissolved carbon. I prepared a fairly dilute solution of Iron(II) Sulfate and carefully added 3mL of Concentrated Sulfuric Acid to acidify it. I poured the residue solution into the Iron Sulfate and Sulfuric Acid mixture. The brown color shows a positive result for Nitrite.
How Much Water Does An RO (Reverse Osmosis) System Waste? As you can see from the animation, LINX technology offers superior water conservation over wasteful RO technology.

CHINA: 3 KIDS KILLED BY NITRITE-TAINTED MILK CCTV News Three children have died of food poisoning in northwest China's Gansu Province. Investigators suspect they ingested nitrite-tainted milk. Thirty-five other patients are being treated at two hospitals in Pingliang City. One of them is in critical condition, while the others are stable. An initial investigation shows the children were poisoned by nitrite after drinking bulk milk provided by two local dairy farms. The two farms have been sealed off after the accident and their managers are being probed. Information provided by Thank you http

Lewis Structure (6): Nitrite ion A simple way to draw the preferred Lewis electron dot structure for the nitrite anion. I simply draw the valence electrons around each atom and place the extra electron on an unpaired electron. When there's more than one unpaired electron, I put it the most electronegative atom. Then, I form bonds to make each atom as "happy" as possible (ie. complete octet). :) I prefer this method to the "add up all valence electrons + add/subtract the charges + distribute accordingly" method that is often taught in general chemistry textbooks. This method doesn't require math or memorization, and it helps you understand formal charges! Oh, it also helps you draw a preferred Lewis structure (with the least amount of formal charge separation) on the first try..... Try this method to draw the preferred structure for sulfate anion (SO42-).

How to make your own DIY Aquarium Air Driven Filter & learn The Nitrogen Cycle! ~Nitrogen Cycle The ammonia can be in two forms. Toxic (to the fish) ammonia is in the form of NH3 and occurs when the ph is greater than 7.0. Nontoxic ammonia is NH4 and occurs when the ph is below 7.0. Ammonia is very toxic to fish. Ammonia is broken down into Nitrites (NO2) by special bacteria called "Nitrosomonas" bacteria. Then the Nitrites are broken down into "Nitrates" (NO3) by another special bacterium called "Nitrobacter bacteria". Nitrates are not harmful to fish unless they become high. The most effective way to keep nitrates low is through water changes. In a new aquarium very little of the nitrosomonas or nitrobacter bacteria are present, and need time to reproduce to sufficient levels to breakdown their respective nitrogen compounds. The bacteria attach to surfaces in the aquarium such as gravel (if you have it) or the material in the filter, such as sponges that have a large surface area for the bacteria to attach to. ~Homemade DIY Aquarium Filter This process requires the following items: Gravel, Filter floss or sponge, straws, tube, silicon tubing, air pump. It will take about 15 minutes to make this very efficient homemade filter.
Deadly Food Poisoning at Chinese Hotel Sodium nitrite was behind a food poisoning incident in China's southwest Sichuan province last week, according to local health authorities. One woman died and dozens were hospitalized after they ate breakfast at a hotel. Health authorities in China's Sichuan province said on Monday that they found large amounts of sodium nitrite in food that killed one person and sickened dozens of others. They had eaten breakfast at the Pearl Garden Hotel in Luding County. Sodium nitrite is used to preserve color in meat and to pickle vegetables. It also has industrial uses. It can be toxic in large amounts. The Sichuan Provincial Disease Control and Prevention Center said in a press release on Monday that noodles and porridge from the hotel had a nitrite content of more than 500 times the safe level. [Chemistry Professor Gaston Wu, National Taiwan Normal University]: "When a large amount of nitrite in the human body combines with protein-based food, the nitrite will react with the food and form a toxic substance called N-nitrosamine. This is carcinogenic." State media says 42 people—most of them tourists—were hospitalized after breakfast when they suffered nausea and vomiting. One woman from Guangzhou province later died in the hospital. Authorities don't know how the nitrite got into the food, but suspect the cooks may have mistaken it for salt. The Pearl Garden Hotel has been closed, pending a full investigation.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Diet Treatment Part 1 http The specific diet treatment tips we found helpful were: * We kept a food diary to see which foods made him feel better or worse. Trigger foods seemed to be: o Hot dogs, bacon, lunch meat anything with nitrites. I also kept from giving him too many foods with naturally occurring nitrites, though based on his diet diary these didn't seem to be a problem. But I didn't want to take any chances. I always buy nitrite free meats at home, but initially I didn't think the limited exposure to nitrites my son got from school lunches and occasional restaurant meals would be significant. Was I ever wrong on that front. Cutting out the cafeteria lunches and nitrite cured food at restaurants made a significant improvement in my son's health. o Birthday cake - we think it was the dye in the frostings that made him sick. The preservatives and high levels of sugar probably didn't help either. o For some reason chocolate doughnuts really made him worse. * My son seemed to have the least problems with MCS when his pH was within a normal range. * I made most meals from scratch when possible. I bought a rotisserie to cook up organic meat ahead of time for him to take in his lunch to avoid the nitrites in processed lunch meat. I also bought a rice cooker to make up big batches of organic rice. * I started making my son's lunch each day, packing it with whole, preservative and dye free foods from home instead of letting him eat at ...

Nitrite fun 7:3 Potassium Nitrite and Brown Rice Flour
FISHLESS cycling aquariums! Hi everyone :) I made this video to document and teach people about the fishless cycle. If you dont already know what that is, it is a form of cycling, and instead of using a couple "hardy" fish, you use ammonia. Fish produce waste which is then turned into ammonia which is deadly to fish, bacteria eats the ammonia and turns it into nitrITES, which are also deadly. NitrITES are then turned into nitrATES which are still deadly to fish, but only in large amounts. Bacically using the fishless cycle you skip having the fish produce waste to create ammonia, you just add ammonia yourself. This speeds up the proccess of cycling your tank and also is nicer to the fish. Its very simple, if you didn't quite get it on the video, heres a step by step guide: If you want to learn more about it juse search "fishless cycle" on google and there are many links that will come up. You will need ammonia (can be tricky to find, i got mine at Food Basics), test kits (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate), good to have filter material or gravel form established tank. I really believe this is a better, faster and more humane way to cycle your tank, and an added bonus, when your tank is completely cycled you will have a larger bacteria colony then cycling it with fish and you will be able to add more fish at once right away! Thanks for watching my video, hope more people will try this now! community tank or cichlid tank? Any info and comments are appreatiated :)

Persuasive Speech on Nitrates in Our Food by Ms. Amy A persuasive speech for a college-level communications class. Join Ms. Amy as she points out the inherent dangers of nitrates used to preserve meats and other foods we commonly consume. Nitrites are commonly found in the 'sodium nitrite' form in hot dogs, ham, bacon, and canned meats such as Spam. Some of the effects of nitrites can include increased risk for cancer including colorectal and pancreatic cancers. Reduce your risk by choosing nitrite-free foods and by consuming foods high in antioxidants such as vitamin C.
