  • Global nitrogen pollution: nitrate build up from soils to the sea (by Philip Taylor) The creation of nitrogen fertilizers have greatly benefited humans by increasing crop yields and ensuring food security in many areas of the world. While some places need more fertilizer, like much of sub-Sahara Africa, many places are rife with nitrogen. The overabundance of nitrogen, particularly nitrates, creates a host of environmental problems, including dead zone formation, elevation of infectious disease, drive harmful algal blooms, enhance greenhouse gas emissions, among other negative consequences. The challenge ahead is maximize the obvious benefits while minimizing the damaging effects of nitrogen use. Here, I briefly describe findings presented in a paper published in the journal Nature ("Stoichiometric control of organic carbon-nitrate relationships from soils to the sea", April 22nd issue, 2010) that explains how nitrate accumulates from soils to the seas across earth's biomes. Our findings represent a new framework to understand the fate of nitrate in ecosystems worldwide, which could help management strategies targeting nitrogen pollution. They fix it to be assimilated by the plants, some of which are woven right into your pants. They get it most from dead stuff, now isn't that nice? Decomposing to NH4, NO2, and NO3. Ammonification is what that is called. (The decomposition if you wondered at all.) Decomposers (surprise!) do all the dirty work, literally. It's going back into the dirt! Nitrification is where bacteria take power, convert ammonium to nitrate over and over. NH4, NO2, and NO3, chemical abbrevs for simplicity. Legumes, or beans, filled with that stuff, harvested and never getting back to earth. Denitrification is the last of it all, followed by the anaerobic ammonium oxidation. In anaerobic places bacteria wrap up the cycle, making gas from the nitrogen that's left over. But waste water dumping and digging up legumes might mean the environment is doomed! No need to worry though, there's plenty to do. Like not digging up the legumes... Clean air and water acts by the USA help with pollution from plants... industrial plants! By cleaning up our actions we can all help, cleaning the N cycle and saving the planet.

  • Logging in the Amazon Deforestation in the Amazon is a very real problem with large losses of biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and oxygen production. Some of the main causes of deforestation are forest conversion to pastureland for the short economic gain involved in the cattle industry. The soil of the amazon is not a very good soil and depends heavily on the nitrification and nutrient load that a closed forest system provides. When a forest is clearcut cattle can be raised and grazed on this land for several year s but then it is left so depleted it will require high fertilizer inputs to be production or the natural forest regeneration will occur very slowly. This is the norm of what is happening in the amazon which is continuing to lose forests at an alarming rate. It then might seem strange to hear that argument that investing in lumber companies will be one way to help save the Amazon rain forest but it is a very viable option. The current clear cutting is performed by illegal logging companies that have no investment in the land they are logging because it isn't their land. Companies like Cikel the operation shown in the video own large tracks of land that they do their logging on. This land ownership is the key to developing a sustainable logging system in Brazil. If a company only cuts the land it owns and the most expensive wood comes from tree species late in the forest regeneration cycle then there is a big investment to do selective, sustainable harvesting of lumber.
