  • Human Body Evolutionary Patchwork-Dr. Alan Walker www.anthro.psu.edu AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION: Dr. Walker is a paleoanthropologist who works on primate and human evolution, concentrating mainly on the Neogene record from East Africa. Dr. Walker endeavors to extract ancient behaviors from the fossil and taphonomic record. Teeth record information about an individual's diet and life history and semicircular c***s are tuned to a species' rapidity of locomotion. Walker is collaborating with colleagues in other universities to quantify tooth wear in evaluating possible diets of extinct primates and has just finished a long term program with Dr. Tim Ryan of the Department and other colleagues of using high resolution CT scanning to quantify the semicircular c***s of living and fossil primates. He is also collaborating with Dr. Ryan on a study of the scaling phenomena in trabecular bone in primates, with a view to using the results to inform us about the use of the limbs in extinct forms.
  • Megafauna Extinction: Did Humans or Climate Kill Off the Mammoths? Complete video at: fora.tv Stanford biologist Elizabeth Hadly recaps a debate among biologists over whether prehistoric megafauna like mammoths, giant sloths and saber-toothed cats became extinct due to overhunting by humans, or by a combination of hunting and a changing climate. ----- Stanford biology professor Elizabeth Hadly's research in the far reaches of the globe from India to Patagonia to Southeast Asia addresses the issues of what determines and maintains vertebrate (especially mammal) diversity through space and time and how that diversity is influenced by the environment. - California Academy of Sciences Elizabeth Hadly is Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences and Departmen of Geology and Environmental Sciences, Stanford University. The research of Elizabeth Hadly probes how perturbations such as climatic change influence the evolution and ecology of Neogene vertebrates. Professor Hadly's field research involves excavation of finely stratified Holocene paleontological sites and collection of modern specimens in western North America and Patagonia. • THE WORLD'S BIGGEST SHARK EVER! MEGALODON..AMAZING! visit us at The megalodon (pronounced /ˈmɛɡələdɒn/ MEG-ə-lə-don, "big tooth" in Greek, from μέγας and ὀδούς) was a mega-tooth shark that lived in the prehistoric times, during the late Oligocene epoch and Neogene period,[1] approximately 25 to 1.5 million years ago, and was a super-predator. Paleontological research indicates that megalodon is the largest and most powerful macro-predatory fish in vertebrate history. Megalodon is principally known from partially preserved skeletal remains, which indicate a shark of gigantic proportions — approaching a length of around 20 metres (66 ft), larger than any other species, extinct or extant. After scrutiny of its remains, scientists have assigned megalodon to the order Lamniformes but its genus is disputed. Scientists suggest that megalodon looked like a stockier version of the great white shark in life. Fossil evidence confirms that megalodon had a cosmopolitan distribution. Bite marks on fossil bones from megalodon indicate that it preyed upon large marine animals.

TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Magellanic's travel blog entry: "Day 86: November 8, 2007 San Carlos to Coronel Moldes-Travels with Toyo II Breakfast was ready at 8:00. We ate and then loaded up the vehicle. I paid the bill and gave Sonia and Martina Chico Bags, knowing that they will surely be used. They are both very environmentally-minded. The bill was only 80 pesos for the night (~$25). It was another beautiful day as we drove back down the Quebrada de las Conchas, arriving in Coronel Moldes, in the southern part of the Valle de Lerma, a little before 1:00. We bought bread, meat, and cheese to eat in the field and then took the road west out of town to the Dique de Puerto Diaz and the Quebrada de Chuñapampa. At the Finca San Roque, we pulled in to let them know we would be working in the quebrada but we had to drive around a lot before we found a guy tending the irrigation channels in a field. We drove onward until we came to a locked gate across the road near a small sanctuary. Putting on our packs, we stepped into the stream and started walking up it to find the base of the Neogene section. The water was soothing on our feet but the bottom was kind of slippery. I was very glad I had my walking stick. We walked for about an hour before coming to a transition in the rocks that I figured must be ...

  • Mammal Biology: As Temps Rise, Species Shrink and Diversity Wanes Complete video at: fora.tv Stanford biologist Elizabeth Hadly explains some of the ways in which mammals may be effected by global warming. In addition to fluctuating populations and dwindling genetic diversity, she notes evidence suggesting that some species tend to decrease in size as temperatures get warmer. ----- Stanford biology professor Elizabeth Hadly's research in the far reaches of the globe from India to Patagonia to Southeast Asia addresses the issues of what determines and maintains vertebrate (especially mammal) diversity through space and time and how that diversity is influenced by the environment. - California Academy of Science Elizabeth Hadly is Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences and Departmen of Geology and Environmental Sciences, Stanford University. The research of Elizabeth Hadly probes how perturbations such as climatic change influence the evolution and ecology of Neogene vertebrates. She uses a combined field and laboratory approach to examine how ecological perturbations link or decouple levels of biological organization, because understanding the links among ecosystems, species, populations and genes is central to understanding how organisms exist, evolve and become extinct. She addresses problems in organismal biology from both evolutionary and ecological perspectives, primarily using extant mammals. One of the unique aspects of her overall approach is the focus on the decadal to millennial time scale, a scale that is ...
