The Nasties Review: Anthropophagous The Beast Part 1 of my series of videos reviewing the scum of the movie world..... The Video Nasties. Each episode i shall be exploring the DPP list of banned videos to the best extent i can and looking at each film in a critical fashion starting with the trashy banned film Anthropohagus The Beast, or The Grim Reaper...or The savage Island etc etc. This is a delightful tale set on a greek island with an inhabitant who developed a taste for human flesh due to a shipwreck and incidentally was driven insane when he had to eat his family to survive. Mad as a bag of rabid ferrets, this film plumbed the depths of bad taste including an abortion/dinner scene that lives as an infamous example of the VIDEO NASTIES. The Nasties Review: What is Mondo? A brief guide to exploitation documentary. As a lead into my next review I thought it would be an idea to introduce the Mondo genre to the uninitiated. This is by no means a complete exploration of the area which is something that could take a series in its own rights and an awful lot more research than i have currently done however this should be enough to get the basics of one of the most bizarre and often disturbing areas of filmmaking across. The book I recomend for further reading is 'Killing For Culture: An illustrated history of Death Film from Mondo to Snuff' by David Kerekes and David Slater. Its a very good and in depth examination of the darkest areas of filmmaking and is superbly written in an intelligent, readable and non dismisive way. Please Rate if you like it, or indeed dont. The Nasties Review: Visiting Hours There's some sickness on the ward as Michael Ironside goes on a murderous hunt for a reporter who he disagrees with rather forcefully. Visiting Hours brings terror to the hospital in this interesting and brutal slasher movie from Canada. Additional Info: this cut is the 105 mins US release The BBFC apparently passed it uncut right back in 1986 but I think this 'uncut' from the UK cinema release and that was already cut, possibly for the reasons I mentioned in the review. The US dvd runs at 105min and the UK cut is 99 mins 26 secs which when you allow for the frame rate difference etc is a cut of about 1 min 30 secs

The Nasties Review: Faces of Death This is the second in my series of reviews of the scum of the movie world, The Video Nasties. If you are unfamiliar with what a mondo film is i recomend you watch my introduction to mondo first.... This time I'm reviewing the mondo death film 'Faces of Death'. One of the poster children for video nasties this film was held up as one of the most vile, depraved examples of video excess. Depicting a heady combination of real and faked death scenes to a narration by a sombre death obsessed pathologist 'Dr Frances B Gross' (really), we are taken on an exploration or as some have it, an exhibition of death coming in many forms. So what is this film, where did it come from and what makes people watch this stuff. In this review I will examine the film in context of these questions. The Nasties Review: Deep River Savages Running as an Italian exploitation version of A Man Called Horse, Umberto Lenzi brings us this unlikely love story set against the background of a primitive world. Whilst this film has all the look and feel of a Lenzi film, it's surprisingly restrained in comparison to the utterly horrific goings on in Cannibal Ferrox, it's certainly not the film I expected it to be, hailed as it is as to be the first of the cannibal genre.
