The Nuclear Medicine Stress Test is frequently ordered when a person is not able to walk on a Treadmill with enough vigor, such that they can reach the clinically significant Target Heartrate. The Nuclear Medicine Stress Test has a duration of several hours. A Radio-Isotope is administered through an Intravenous Access. This Radio-Isotope has an affinity, or attraction to the Heart Muscle Cell, the Myocyte. The Radio-Isotope is given a specified amount of time to reach the Myocardial Cells of the Heart. At this point the Heartrate is increased via the administration of a stimulating medicine, also through the Intravenous Access. A Scan starts at this point, with the Scanner being able to detect the "breakdown" of the Radio-Isotope. The Scanning process, via software technologies, creates images of the Myocardium, based on what areas of the Myocardium the Radio-Isotope was able to circulate to. Areas of the Heart that are poorly perfused, or not perfused at all, via the Coronary Arteries, appear as weaker images, or totally absent, in the resulting series of Myocardial images. Abnormal findings may therefore require further evaluation, and potentially both medical and interventional therapeutic measures.

  • A Sketch-based Interface for Modeling Myocardial Fiber Orientation We propose a sketch-based interface for modeling the myocardial fiber orientation required in the electrophysiological simulation of the heart, especially the ventricles. The user can create a volumetric vector field that represents the myocardial fiber orientation in two steps. First, the user defines a depth field over the three-dimensional (3D) ventricular model to create layers of myocardium. Then, the user can peel these layers and draw strokes on them to specify the myocardial fiber orientation in each layer. We represent the 3D ventricular model as a tetrahedral mesh and perform Laplacian smoothing over the mesh vertices to interpolate the vector field defined by the user-drawn strokes. Our method also allows the user to perform deformations on volumetric models of myocardial fiber orientation, which is very important for studying heart disease associated with morphological abnormalities.   • Muscular Thin Film Helical Actuator The spontaneous 3-dimensional roll-up of a rectangle MTF into a helical actuator was dictated by the axis of myocardial alignment relative to the length of the rectangle. Myocardium on the convex surface of the actuator caused it to lengthen (unwind, helical pitch decreased) during systolic contraction. The cardiomyocytes were patterned into discrete muscle fibers electrically isolated from on another and required an externally applied electric field of 10 V at 0.5 Hz to initiate coordinated contraction of the entire MTF.

  • Myocardial Blood Flow - Coronary vessels During contraction of the ventricular myocardium (systole), the subendocardial coronary vessels (the vessels that enter the myocardium) are compressed due to the high intraventricular pressures. However, the epicardial coronary vessels (the vessels that run along the outer surface of the heart) remain patent. Because of this, blood flow in the subendocardium stops. As a result most myocardial perfusion occurs during heart relaxation (diastole) when the subendocardial coronary vessels are patent and under low pressure. This contributes to the filling difficulties of the coronary arteries. Compression remains the same. Failure of oxygen delivery caused by a decrease in blood flow in front of increased oxygen demand of the heart results in tissue ischemia, a condition of oxygen debt. Brief ischemia is associated with intense chest pain, known as angina. Severe ischemia can cause the heart muscle to die from hypoxia, such as during a myocardial infarction. Chronic moderate ischemia causes contraction of the heart to weaken, known as myocardial hibernation.
