  • Musculoskeletal Simulation-based Study of Biped Locomotion Paper Abstract: Researchers have hypothesized that animal locomotory patterns seen are consistent with the resonant frequencies endowed by their musculoskeletal structures. Further it is posited that systems succeed in minimizing their energy expenditure by moving at this resonant frequency. We choose to systematically study this hypothesis in the specific context of bipedal locomotion. Researchers have sought to correlate the preferred strike frequency with the resonant frequencies of the model or used indirect measurement such as oxygen consumption, electromyography (EMG) to assess expended effort. In our study, we employed virtual prototyping with a capable musculoskeletal simulation model to study the same hypothesis. We benchmark against the available literature and demonstrate that valuable insights can be obtained that can complement the current knowledge-base in biped locomotion. *This paper won the "Best Poster Award" at the conference. • Prolotherapy TMJ by a Musculoskeletal Physician肌骼科醫生示範顳下頜關節的保絡治療 A Musculoskeletal Physician in Hong Kong, explains and demonstrates a typical Prolotherapy procedure to the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its related tendons and ligaments.Musculoskeletal Physicians of HKIMM have been treating patients from around the world with Prolotherapy and other comprehensive musculoskeletal treatments. Musculoskeletal Physicians of HKIMM have found that Prolotherapy is an excellent alternative to conventional surgeries for treating pain of the musculoskeletal systems. Prolotherapy offers a permanent solution for the ROOT CAUSES of musculoskeletal problems typically not released with traditional anti-inflammatory treatments, which includes NSAIDs and cortisone injections. A pertinent musculoskeletal problem which showed excellent improvement with Prolotherapy is the Temporomandibular joint disorder which have the following symptoms:  Biting or chewing difficulty or discomfort  Clicking, popping, or grating sound when opening or closing the mouth  Bruxism  Dull, aching pain in the face  Earache  Headache  Jaw pain or tenderness of the jaw  Reduced ability to open or close the mouth  Tinnitus  Secondary restriction and increased tension of the neck muscles in the same side of the lax TMJ (commonly missed). Unlike typical finger or vertebral junctions, each TMJ actually has two joints, which allow it to both rotate and to translate (slide). With use, it is common to see wear of both the bone and cartilage components of it ...
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries When treating musculoskeletal injuries, you should first ascertain what caused the injury and check for any other injuries. When you begin treating, check for any deformity to determine the potential for the injury to become a compound fracture. If the area merely appears red and swollen, you may then begin the RICE treatment Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. To splint the injury, have the patient hold the injury while you place it in a splint. Next, you want to begin wrapping the injury at the distal end, moving toward the heart. In the case of arms, you may then continue to wrap around the body to give extra rest and support. Once you are done splinting the injury, pinch the nail beds to ensure circulation has not been cut off.

Sluka of the University of Iowa, USA, introduces the concept of musculoskeletal pain and the importance of understanding it.

  • Musculoskeletal Simulation based Optimization of Rehabilitation Program Title: "Musculoskeletal Simulation based Optimization of Rehabilitation Programs". Author: Leng-Feng Lee (llee3@eng.buffalo.edu) Advisor: Dr. Venkat Krovi URL://www.eng.buffalo.edu/~llee3 Summary: Rehabilitation is a complex multifaceted process with complexity and variability that depends not only on human patients and/or specialized equipment but also on the nature of their functional interaction. Rapid and effective customization of the functional interactions between the patient and the rehabilitation device thus becomes critical for any rehabilitation program. Two principal dimensions govern the effectiveness of such functional interactions: geometric placement of user-device (ergonomics) and exercise selection and performance (regimen). In this paper, we discuss aspects of creation of a Virtual Design Environment, leveraging tools from musculoskeletal ***ysis, optimization, simulation-based design, that will permit a therapist to rapidly evaluate and systematically customize various candidate rehabilitation programs. Specifically, this framework: (i) permits study of parametric performance variability due to ergonomic or regimen variability; and (ii) facilitates use of all design tools such as optimization to determine the best program. We illustrate various aspects of this customization using an illustrative case-study of a motor-rehabilitation haptic virtual driving environment. • Musculoskeletal Simulation of Optimal Gait Frequency. A musculoskeletal simulation of a single crab leg motion to determine the optimal gait frequency. This is a small project while working with Dr. Medler in a research where he is interested in studying the relation between strike frequency and body size. The 'hypothesis' is that: For locomotion that involves repetitive motion, the optimal gait frequency (lowest energy consumption) is one at the speed of it's propulsive structures (arms, legs, fins, wings) resonant frequencies. While there are many experimental / field data to support this hypothesis, we would like to see if the musculoskeletal ***ysis tool such as AnyBody could gives us such result. In a setting similar to a pendulum in swinging motion, we would expect the muscle do not need to do any work if the pendulum is swinging at its own natural frequency. At other frequencies beside the natural frequency, the muscle will have to slow / speed up and swinging motion and thus work need to be done to accomplish this. The result from this simple study give the expected result, in which at the pendulum natural frequency of about 0.78Hz, the muscle work is minimum; at other frequencies, the muscles need to do more work to achieve the desired motion/speed.
