  • El Morro, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico The construction of the Fort San Felipe del Morro began in 1539 when King Charles V of Spain authorized its construction, including the surrounding walls. The purpose was to defend the port of San Juan.It was also constructed to control the entry to the harbor. Construction started the same year with a tiny proto-fortress that was "completed" in 1589. This small section comprises perhaps 10% of the structure people see today. In 1587, engineers Juan de Tejada and Juan Bautista Antonelli designed the actual appearance of the castle following well established Spanish military fortification design principles. Similar Spanish fortifications of the 17th-18th centuries can be seen in Cuba, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Veracruz and Acapulco, Mexico, Portobello and Panama City, Panamá,and many other Latin American locations which were governed as part of the Spanish Empire during the Age of Exploration. The first fort of the Americas, Fort San Felipe, was built in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in 1540. Many complex additional new structures were added to El Morro over the next 400 years. The outer walls are six meters thick. In 1680, Governor Enrique Enríquez de Sotomayor begun the construction of the walls surrounding the city of San Juan, which took 48 years. By the late 18th century, El Morro's walls had grown to be 18 feet (5.5 m) thick. Today El Morro has six levels that rise from sea level to 145 feet (44 m) high. All along the walls are seen the dome-covered ...

  • The SS Morro Castle Disaster "El Desastre del Morro Castle" by Leopoldo González interpreted by Trio Matamoros. When the Morro Castle departed Havana for the final time on September 5th 1934, she carried aboard her 318 passengers and a crew of 231. On September 7th, as the voyage drew near to its conclusion, the series of events that culminated in disaster commenced. That night, the weather deteriorated a fire was discovered in a storage locker in the port side B deck Writing Room. The ship was kept sailing into the wind for a regrettably long time, driving the fire aft, up through the lounge well, and out onto the boat deck. Passengers, unable or unwilling to risk running through the flames to reach the boats congregated on the open decks aft on B, C and D Deck. The vast majority of those who escaped in the Morro Castle lifeboats were crew members, a fact later to draw much negative criticism, mitigated somewhat by the fact that they were quartered forward on the ship and had a knowledge of onboard shortcuts and crew staircases that the passengers did not possess. Those trapped at the stern began jumping when it appeared that the flames were about to burst from the superstructure on to the aft decks. Many broke their necks or knocked themselves out jumping improperly with life preservers on, while others jumped or were thrown from the ship without any life saving devices only to weaken and drown struggling in the increasing storm. Passengers who did not awaken in time had to jump from the cabins in ...

  • SS Morro Castle: Heyday and Tragedy The SS Morro Castle was launched in 1930, and had her maiden voyage from New York to Havana in August of that year. Only four short years later, a mysterious fire broke out on board that has never been explained, rapidly spreading throughout the liner and forcing the evacuation of her passengers in lifeboats. Of the 555 people on board, 133 lost their lives. Featured here are 16mm home movies from that period, the first being "Sandy Sails Morro Castle" for the sail away footage, followed by amateur movies of the ship still burning on the beach in New Jersey. This video is dedicated to those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - Robin & Zelda Williams [Commercial #2] Robin Williams and daughter continue to share their passion for Zelda After becoming instantly fascinated by The Legend of Zelda series after playing the original The Legend of Zelda game in 1987, award-winning actor Robin Williams decided to name his daughter Zelda after the Princess featured within the series of games. And now, more than 13 years after the original Nintendo 64 game, Robin and his daughter Zelda are getting to grips with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS. Robin, who has an in-depth knowledge of The Legend of Zelda series, hasn't lost any of his enthusiasm for the game: "Unlike most things from the 1980s, The Legend of Zelda has held up really well. I fell in love with this series years ago, with its incredible storytelling and adventures, but enjoy it even more in 3D. Nintendo has really taken The Legend of Zelda to a whole new level that is exciting for long-time fans like myself, my daughter, and a new generation." For Zelda Williams, who has close ties to The Legend of Zelda since the day she was born, revisiting one of her favourite games from childhood is a very emotional experience: "Seeing my dad all excited when he's playing is really fun. We started to play the game around the same time and we exchange tips on how to solve puzzles and we always try to play together! The game feels really fresh and new thanks to the new improved graphics!"

  • Red Bull Desafio no Morro in Rio de Janeiro (BRA) - Track Intro Slovak Grabs Victory at Favela Downhill in Rio Members of the international downhill mountain bike elite were confronted with obstacles of a very different kind at Red Bull Desafio no Morro as they raced though the winding paths and over the roofs of the Favela Dona Marta at the foot of Rio de Janeiros famous Christ statue. Slovak rider Filip Polc powered his way to victory in the Brazilian metropolis. RIO DE JANEIRO. Downhill mountain bikers may well be more than used to sprinting, jumping and sliding down over steps, roofs, walls and rocks, but the challenge that awaited some of the worlds best at Red Bull Desafio no Morro in Rio de Janeiro surpassed anything and everything that had gone before. The 760-metre course descended 170 vertical metres, contained 13 special obstacles and was punctuated with plenty of jumps. So, sounds like a normal downhill, right? Wrong. The location for the high-speed event wasnt a mountainside but the Favela Dona Marta at the foot of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue dominating the Rio de Janeiro skyline. Reaching speeds of up to 50km/h, the athletes hurtled through alleys no more than 80cm wide in places as they passed living rooms, bars and shops. Its a bit like in motor rallying when the drivers manage to squeeze the car through the gap at the very last second, commented Slovakias Filip Polc. As if the course through the shanty town wasnt challenging enough, the competitors also had to contend with unexpected obstacles of the ...

  • Downhill bike race in Brazil slum- Red Bull Desafio no Morro Slovakia's Filip Polc took top honors in the Red Bull Desafio no Morro, an unprecedented mountain bike downhill competition inside a favela (slum) in Rio de Janeiro. Polc's best time of 1:39.91 down the 760 meters of the favela's alleys and staircases was enough to edge Brazilian Markolf Berchtold by over 1.5s. Britain's Dan Atherton completed the podium with a top mark of 1:42.29. Dan's brother Gee Atherton entered the competition in Brazil as the clear favorite, and confirmed those expectations by topping the qualifying session on Saturday. Race day didn't equal lucky day for Gee, however, who ended up last among the 10 riders competing after suffering a flat rear tire halfway through the course.

  • El Morro of San Juan Video accompanied w Music of Revolución Pics of Puerto Rico, great music--awesome. They're listed on MySpace, I let them know of this video and haven't protested using this track. If they want me to remove it, now, their loss, but I will. (Sidenote: don't use music w/o permission in videos, then you lose all your sound when the "big guys" don't like it! They still come after you even when you make it private!) * Location: Bayamon, Puerto Rico, United States * Genre: Alternative/Punk » Post-Grunge Biography The dictionary defines Revolución, or Revolution, as a radical transformation in any order. It is from this definition that this band from the island of Puerto Rico takes it's name. In their beginnings, the singer and guitar player of the band (Miguel Rodríguez, b.1980) decided to learn to play guitar in 1993, when he was only 13 years old, to form a band. The main reason he decided to do so was the lack of bands playing music which he truly liked. As time passed, he began to trust more his musical skills, so he started searching for members of his future band. The first person who expressed interest was his brother (Adenawar Rodríguez, b.1978), who started playing with an old, horribly sounding drumset which was later upgraded for one that sounded as they previously envisioned. After practicing together for about 8 months, exclusively songs by other bands, they decided to complete their sound by adding a bass guitar. They did not want just any bassist, but one who had the same line of musical ideas that they ...
  • [Xenoblade Chronicles] Gameplay video (CAM) Game play video for Xenoblade Chronicles sneakily taken from the back of a Nintendo Unleashed event. Following details were revealed: Slated for September 2011 for UK Translation supposedly complete Voice acting done with British accents Controls The area in the video seems to be some sort of starting area like a tut but not really, is guess this since you get messages when you encounter new things which have their own inbox of sorts. This also implies that the translation is finished and it did seem at the time that the game shown was FULLY TRANSLATED as there was no time limit of any sort. The controls are quite difficult on the Pro controller but the attendant only said a few of the controls and i had to guess the rest. You switch between Arts or moves i guess using the d-pad but this was actually quite hard since you need your thumb for movement. The z triggers didnt seem to have use but i think they can also be used to switch between arts as that would have been a lot more fluid. The graphics are great, just take Monster Hunter Tri and add a bit of awesomesauce and thats Xenoblade. No framerate issues were apparent and the camera glitched once but it was only the one time as for the most of the day it was fine. There were references to games such as Last Story by the attendants but they just stated that it was in need of a translation.
