Invisible was a multi disciplinary project created in 2007 by artists/musicians Anna Piva and Edward George, who also record for Berlin's Chain Reaction label as Hallucinator. With Invisible, Piva and George used data evidence of the existence of dark energy as the basis for a sound art installation in the three telescope domes at Cambridge University's Institute of Astronomy, a school workshop in Cambridge, a film and sound art workshop in Stuttgart, and two performances at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre and the Science Museum Dana Centre in London. The data, taken from a cluster of galaxies by the name of Abell 2029, was given to the artists by astronomer Dr. Carolin Crawford, the project's key collaborator, running the Cambridge school workshops with the artists, as well as giving talks and presentations on the nature of dark energy, the invisible force which is accelerating the speed at which the Universe is expanding. The stadium is an attempt at undoing the interiority of the traditional stadium and using the building as an ornamental framing mechanism for a sport. By deterritorializing the stadium and using the building as an ornamental device, our stadium is able to expose the playing field to the terraced parking and tailgating areas. The decomposition of hierarchy between the ticket holders and tailgaters enables us to use the American tradition of tailgating as a device to introduce soccer as the new American pastime. As American spectators grow accustomed to the sport by developing team rivalries and favorite players, the desire to purchase seats closer to the action will develop among the spectators, therefore drawing people into the stadium. In addition, the site acts as a transitional zone that unites the formal logic of the stadium with the city grid of Los Angeles. Within the site, the city grid takes on a new identity as entrance by opening up the entire stadium. For example, the dissolving of conventional architectural elements like skin, enclosure, and the single designated entrance areas, resulting in the exposure of structure and revealing the playing field.   • Exoplanet at Formalhaut - Paul Kalas (SETI Talks) SETI Talks Archive: Advances in high-contrast imaging have produced a new sample of spatially resolved debris disks with morphologies attributed to the dynamical effects of planets. I will briefly review several cases, including our recent non-detection of Beta Pictoris b using Keck adaptive optics at L-prime. Then I will focus on the case for a planetary system around the nearby A star Fomalhaut. Optical coronagraphic observations using the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard HST shows a vast dusty debris belt offset from the star and cleanly sculpted at its inside border. Follow-up HST images have further revealed a co-moving point source with apparent orbital motion 18 AU interior to the dust belt. I will discuss both the observational and theoretical evidence that the point source is a planet with less than 3 Jupiter masses, making Fomalhaut b the lowest mass planet candidate detected via direct imaging. I will give alternate explanations and discuss future plans for the detailed mapping of Fomalhaut's planetary system.

  • Wriggraph: A Kinetic Graph Model Describing Ontogeny and Motility of Artificial Creatures Earlier models of kinetic artificial creatures typically describe ontogenetic mechanisms and motion control mechanisms separately. The latter are often assumed free from morphological constraints, reducing the biological and physical plausibility of these creatures. To go over these limitations, here we propose Wriggraph, a kinetic graph model that describes both ontogeny and motility of graph-based artificial creatures in a unified framework. The utility of this model is demonstrated by constructing an artificial creature tetrad, which can spontaneously develop into a stable tetrahedral shape, move using differentiated nodes, home toward a predefined goal, and self-repair in events of node removal. All of these capabilities are achieved collectively by functionally identical nodes and their local interaction only. We expect a number of future extensions of this research project, including the automated acquisition of more complex morphologies and behaviors using evolutionary computation, and the revision of model assumptions to make node division mechanisms more realistic. Originally observed by OMEGA, CRISM has refined the detections and allowed positive identification of several phyllosilicate minerals including nontronite, montmorillonite, and kaolinite, as well as hydrated silica, based on their distinct spectral characteristics. The textures and morphologies of these units have been characterized using HiRISE imagery. The deep ocean is the largest living space on Earth, abundant with diverse alien-looking life forms despite the fact that it is dark, cold, has limited resources and exerts high pressures. In response to these environmental challenges and unique ecological constraints, organisms have evolved a variety of forms and functions including transparent dome eye covers, cloaks of invisibility, and the ability to communicate by making bioluminescent light. Because there are few surfaces, morphologies have diversified in unconstrained manner resulting in 40-meter long jellies and diaphanous comb jellies that propel themselves with eyelash-like cilia. Many of these deep-sea species are not yet described, and current research involves understanding the diversity and relationships of these animals, as well as the genetic underpinnings of their unique bio-optical properties. Although they are obscure even to marine biologists and live in some of most unexplored habitats on the planet, these animals actually can occur as close as a few kilometers from a large city. This paradox underscores how much we have yet to learn about life on this planet.

This lecture describes blood, urine and skin/soft tissue cultures, focusing on the types of media, sample collection processes, culture procedures, as well as speciation and susceptibility testing. Basic staining procedures, such as the simple stain, gram stain, spore stain, negative stain, and acid fast stain are briefly discussed. Included in the staining procedure descriptions are explanations of the organisms that the stains identify. In addition to staining procedures, biochemical tests used for differentiating bacteria are covered. Concluding the lecture are some facts about fungi and viruses, focusing on the current 2009 novel H1N1 influenza pandemic.

A drop on a fiber assumes either of the two competing morphologies depending on the contact angle and the drop volume relative to the fiber size: a symmetric barrel shape where the drop engulfs the fiber or an asymmetric clamshell shape where the drop sits on the side of the fiber.   • Ralph McNeilage, Botany & Mycology 2009 Poster Session Interviews Fertilization timing and pollen tube growth in Nymphaea (Nymphaeales). Co-authors: Mackenzie L. Taylor, and Joseph H. Williams. The progamic phase is the life history stage in seed plants that begins with pollination and ends with fertilization. Investigating progamic phase development in early-divergent angiosperm lineages may provide insights into the flexibility of developmental traits that coordinate the unique fertilization process in angiosperms. Nymphaeales (water lilies) is well suited among early-divergent lineages for investigations of progamic phase biology because it exhibits pollination strategies and flower morphologies that are more diverse than most other basal lineages. The objective of this study was to characterize progamic phase development in Nymphaea odorata, the American white water lily. Hand-pollinations and sequential collections of flowers (5, 10, 15, 30 minutes and every half an hour thereafter until 6 hours after pollination) were used to determine the timing of developmental events between pollination and fertilization. Pollen tube pathway, morphology, and growth, as well as timing of pollen germination and female gametophyte receptivity were documented using light and fluorescence microscopy. Pollen germination occurred within five minutes of pollen reception on a restricted area of the stigmatic surface.   • Jellies Jellyfish (also known as jellies or sea jellies) are free-swimming members of the phylum Cnidaria. They have several different morphologies that represent several different cnidarian classes including the Scyphozoa (over 200 species), Staurozoa (about 50 species), Cubozoa (about 20 species), and Hydrozoa (about 1000-1500 species that make jellyfish and many more that do not)[1][2]. The jellyfish in these groups are also called, respectively, scyphomedusae, stauromedusae, cubomedusae, and hydromedusae; medusa is another word for jellyfish. Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Some hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusae, are also found in fresh water and are less than half an inch in size. They are partially white and clear and do not sting. This article focuses on scyphomedusae. These are the large, often colorful, jellyfish that are common in coastal zones worldwide. In its broadest sense, the term jellyfish also generally refers to members of the phylum Ctenophora. Although not closely related to cnidarian jellyfish, ctenophores are also free-swimming planktonic carnivores, are generally transparent or translucent, and exist in shallow to deep portions of all the world's oceans.

Setting University research laboratory. Animals Cryopreserved mouse ES-D3 (American Type Culture Collection, Manassas, VA) cells. Intervention(s) ES cells were exposed to either 0 (control), 0.4, or 12.2 million/mL mixed-size fluorescent nanoparticles in culture (37°C, 5% CO2 in air) for 6 days. Main Outcome Measure(s) Cell viability and morphometric ***ysis were performed. Result(s) ES cells exposed to both concentrations of nanoparticles exhibited smaller cell surface area. The effect was not concentration dependent. In contrast, ES cell nucleus size was unaffected. The nanoparticles distributed into the cytoplasm, pseudopods, and the perinuclear region. ES cell viabilities were reduced 40% and 30% in the low versus high relative concentration, respectively. ES cells in low-concentration nanoparticles became mostly columnar and embryoid body shaped.   • Roberto Matta Roberto Antonio Sebastián Matta Echaurren (November 11, 1911 November 23, 2002), usually known as Matta, was one of Chile's and France's and America's best-known painters and a seminal figure in 20th century art. Born in Santiago, he initially studied architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, but became disillusioned with this occupation and left for Paris in 1933. His travels led him to meet artists such as René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, André Breton, and Le Corbusier. It was Breton who provided the major spur to the Chilean's direction in art, encouraging his work and introducing him to the leading members of the Paris Surrealist movement. Matta produced illustrations and articles for Surrealist journals such as Minotaure. During this period he was introduced to the work of many prominent contemporary European artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp. The first true flowering of Matta's own art came in 1938, when he moved from drawing to the oil painting for which he is best known. This period coincided with his emigration to the United States, where he lived until 1948. His early paintings, such as Invasion of the Night, give an indication of the work he would continue, with diffuse light patterns and bold lines on a featureless background. Through auditory stimulation, this works aims at widening the visitors' perception of the environment, immediately during the experience of the installation, and later when going back to the real sounding world, keeping the musicality in mind. The installation extracts information from the sound environment, using an integrated microphone. The sound ***ysis follows dynamics, pitches, salient sound events, and the presence of speech, on multiple time-scales. The installation reacts on and adapts to the sound environment, including visitors' actions. A sound scenery is created by multiple agents, controlled by the sound ***ysis. An agent induces the behaviour of generated sounds, following different models such as shy, proud, ignore, adapt, dialogue, perturbation, and imitation. The elementary sounds are precise and localisable, including clicks, coloured noises, and pitches. Combined to more complex morphologies, they can evoke sounds existing in the environment such as mechanics, birds, and speech.   • Swarm Stadia Midterm This is a graduate architecture studio project at SCI_arc in 2007. Hernan Diaz Alonso, and Benjamin Bratton were the instructors. The stadium is an attempt at undoing the interiority of the traditional stadium and using the building as an ornamental framing mechanism for a sport. By deterritorializing the stadium and using the building as an ornamental device, our stadium is able to expose the playing field to the terraced parking and tailgating areas. The decomposition of hierarchy between the ticket holders and tailgaters enables us to use the American tradition of tailgating as a device to introduce soccer as the new American pastime. As American spectators grow accustomed to the sport by developing team rivalries and favorite players, the desire to purchase seats closer to the action will develop among the spectators, therefore drawing people into the stadium. In addition, the site acts as a transitional zone that unites the formal logic of the stadium with the city grid of Los Angeles. Within the site, the city grid takes on a new identity as entrance by opening up the entire stadium. For example, the dissolving of conventional architectural elements like skin, enclosure, and the single designated entrance areas, resulting in the exposure of structure and revealing the playing field.   • Invisible [pt1]. Science Museum Dana Centre. London 2007. Invisible is not so much the name of a band as the condition of most of the things and forces that make up our Universe. Invisible was a multi disciplinary project created in 2007 by artists/musicians Anna Piva and Edward George, who also record for Berlin's Chain Reaction label as Hallucinator. With Invisible, Piva and George used data evidence of the existence of dark energy as the basis for a sound art installation in the three telescope domes at Cambridge University's Institute of Astronomy, a school workshop in Cambridge, a film and sound art workshop in Stuttgart, and two performances at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre and the Science Museum Dana Centre in London. The data, taken from a cluster of galaxies by the name of Abell 2029, was given to the artists by astronomer Dr. Carolin Crawford, the project's key collaborator, running the Cambridge school workshops with the artists, as well as giving talks and presentations on the nature of dark energy, the invisible force which is accelerating the speed at which the Universe is expanding. Piva and George gave the data to a quartet of musicians: trumpet player Jim Dovorak and sax player Harrison Smith, both veterans and shapers of the UK's jazz and improv scene, and to sitarist Raj Virdee and tabla player Sukhdeep Singh, two highly respected Indian classical musicians. There are multiple species of lingzhi, scientifically known to be within the lingzhi species complex and mycologists are still researching the differences between species within this complex of species. Lingzhi is a polypore mushroom that is soft (when fresh), corky, and flat, with a conspicuous red-varnished, kidney-shaped cap and, depending on specimen age, white to dull brown pores underneath. It lacks gills on its underside and releases its spores through fine pores, leading to its morphological classification as a polypore. Lingzhi generally occurs in two growth forms, one, found in North America, is sessile and rather large with only a small or no stalk, while the other is smaller and has a long, narrow stalk, and is found mainly in the tropics.
