Dean Williams - Botany 2010 Origin of a disjunct population of Hydrilla verticillata Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) in the East African Great Lakes. Hydrilla verticillata Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) is an aquatic plant that is widely distributed across Asia and the Indo-Pacific, with disjunct populations occurring in NE Europe and the Great Lakes of East Africa. Hydrilla has recently been introduced by humans to a number of areas around the world and has become highly invasive. African hydrilla is morphologically distinct from Asian plants and it was first collected in the East African Great Lakes by Speke during his 1860-1863 expedition. Hydrilla was thus thought to be native to this region and probably genetically distinct due to its isolation. We sequenced 135 samples at the trnD-psbM and trnL-trnF chloroplast regions to determine the genetic relationships of hydrilla throughout most of the species native range to evaluate whether African populations were genetically distinct from Asian forms. Our data indicate that hydrilla is genetically diverse throughout SE Asia and the Indo-Pacific with 15 haplotypes, while only a single haplotype was found in India and Pakistan. A single chloroplast haplotype was found in Burundi and Uganda and this haplotype differed from the India and Pakistan haplotype by one mononucleotide repeat. These data suggest African hydrilla has a west Asian origin and may have been introduced by migratory waterfowl.

Various histochemical studies suggest sweat gland etiology of the disease. Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is morphologically and histologically identical to mammary Paget disease of the nipple. It involves the genital and peri*** skin, and other cutaneous sites rich in apocrine glands. EMPD may evolve from two different sites. EMPD most often arises as a primary cutaneous adenocarcinoma. The epidermis is infiltrated with tumor cells showing glandular differentiation. These cancer cells originate from apocrine gland ducts or from keratinocytic stem cells. The disease may be associated with an underlying adenocarcinoma or carcinoma of the rectum, and 26% of affected patients ultimately die either from the disease itself or from an associated internal malignancy. Multiple polar bodies and two disorganized spindle structures were predominantly observed, pointing towards a cytoplasmic defect in the oocytes as the primary cause of the couple's infertility. In fact, injection of husband's sperm into donor oocytes resulted in the delivery of healthy twins. This report describes a course of action that may be applied for couples with TFF after both IVF and ICSI.

In brief, a large amount of staged embryos from young and healthy flies are collected, sterilized, and then physically dissociated into a single cell suspension using a glass homogenizer. After being plated on culture plates or chamber slides at an appropriate density in culture medium, these cells can further differentiate into several morphologically-distinct cell types, which can be identified by their specific cell markers. Furthermore, we present conditions for treating these cells with double stranded (ds) RNAs to elicit gene knockdown. Efficient RNAi in Drosophila primary cells is accomplished by simply bathing the cells in dsRNA-containing culture medium. The ability to carry out effective RNAi perturbation, together with other molecular, biochemical, cell imaging ***yses, will allow a variety of questions to be answered in Drosophila primary cells, especially those related to differentiated muscle and neuronal cells.

Rather, all three exemplars resolve as sister to several Ponderosae from south central Mexico. Here, we present the first molecular profiles for morphologically similar pines growing on other sky islands in southeastern Arizona, testing three alternative hypotheses: 1) the sky island pines fit within an extensive southern Rockies group (ie P. brachyptera Engelm.); 2) the sky island pines form a taxon distinct from P. brachyptera; 3) reticulate evolution created the distinctive genotype observed on Mt. Also, because multicellular organisms have cells which, like zooids, are specialized and interdependent, siphonophores may provide clues regarding their evolution.[1] Like other hydrozoans, certain siphonophores can emit light. A siphonophore of the genus Erenna has been discovered at a depth of around 1600 meters off the coast of Monterey, California. The individuals from these colonies are strung together like a feather boa. They prey on small animals using stinging cells. Among the stinging cells are stalks with red glowing ends. The tips twitch back and forth creating a twinkling effect. It is theorized that twinkling red light attracts small fish that have been found eaten by these siphonophores. While many sea animals produce blue and green bioluminescence, this siphonophore was only the second lifeform found to produce a red light,the first being the Scaleless Dragonfish, Chirostomias pliopterus.
