From their knowledge of this profund verity, the Balkan people place the art of song at the pinnacle of artistic expression. Their genius in this field - fruit of a thousand year - long story of tears and suffering - draws his nourishment from roots than go back to another world: Byzantium. The thousand year-long tradition of Balkan songs suffered from all the tribulations of a history marred in blood - to be followed by the nightmare of five centuries under the Ottoman yoke. And so their vocal art, the only free expression open to the Balkan people, has been coloured, layered, down the ages. Monodic in its beginnings, then strangely diaphonic, this songs developed his own polyphony which encountered Western harmony in the 20th century.

A late member of the Venetian School, and a contemporary of Claudio Monteverdi, he was a prominent musician in Venice in the first decade of the 17th century, departing after the death of his associate Giovanni Gabrieli and ending his career at the Habsburg court in Austria. His music straddled the dividing-line between Renaissance and Baroque idioms. Little is known of Priuli's early life except that he was born in Venice around 1575. The first twenty-five years of his life are a blank in the record. Beginning in 1600, he was a close associate of Giovanni Gabrieli, and it is presumed he may have been his student; the two were associated for the duration of Priuli's Venetian career. Heinrich Scheidemann (ca. 1595 - 1663) was born in Wöhrden in Holstein. His father was an organist in both Wöhrden and Hamburg, and probably Scheidemann received some early instruction from him. Scheidemann studied with Sweelinck in Amsterdam from 1611 to 1614, and evidently was one of his favorite pupils, since Sweelinck dedicated a canon to him, prior to Scheidemann's return to Germany. By 1629, and possibly earlier, Scheidemann was in Hamburg as organist at the Catharinenkirche, a position which he held for more than thirty years, until his death in Hamburg in early 1663 during an outbreak of the plague. Scheidemann was renowned as an organist and composer, as evidenced by the wide distribution of his works; more organ music by Scheidemann survives than by any other composer of the time. Unlike the other early Baroque German composers, such as Praetorius, Schütz, Scheidt, and Schein, each of whom wrote in most of the current genres and styles, Scheidemann wrote almost entirely organ music. He and his associate Jacopo Corsi (the leading patron of music in France) felt that the music of the day was inferior to classical Greek and Roman art and attempted to recreate music they felt approximated this ancient music. They collaborated with the well-known poet of the time, Ottavio Rinuccini, and thus created a new work, Dafne, that we today call the first opera. (This music was probably far from anything truly resembling the uknown music of ancient Greece). Unfortunately, Dafne did not survive, but Peri and Rinuccinis next collaboration, Euridice, did. Euridice made use of a new technique called recitative, a style of speech-singing that helped moved the action along as it placed the focus on getting a lot of text out in a short amount of time. (Rinuccini was also the librettist for Claudio Monteverdis LArianna, of which only one aria, Ariannas Lament, survives.) Less well known are Peris pieces for solo, two, or three voices.
