  • Out Of Sight - From Quarks To Molecules Science & Reason on Facebook: Complexity (Chapter 3): From Quarks To Molecules --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • • • • --- QUARKS-NEUCLEONS There are two kinds of quarks (physicists call them flavors of quarks) that are found in normal matter These quarks are the UP quark and the DOWN quark. A proton is formed from two up quarks and one down quark while its slightly heavier cousin, the neutron, is formed from two down quarks and one up quark. The red, green, and blue colors of the quarks represent a property that attracts them to one another ... it is this color-charge property of the quarks that holds them together in a proton or neutron. NUCLEUS These protons and neutrons can then combine to form the nucleus of each element in the periodic table. One proton in the nucleus makes hydrogen, two form helium, 6 carbon, 8 oxygen, 79 is gold and 92 uranium. Neutrons help hold the protons together. Because of their electric charge, protons would repel each other more strongly if neutrons were not present, and the heavier elements would come apart. There are approximately as many neutrons in each element as there are protons. ELECTRON SHELLS Atoms are formed when the positively charged protons in the nucleus capture negative electrons. Neutral atoms have captured one negative electron for each positive proton in the nucleus. So Hydrogen has one electron to go with its one proton, Helium two ...

Molecular evolution emerged as a scientific field in the 1960s as researchers from molecular biology, evolutionary biology and population genetics sought to understand recent discoveries on the structure and function of nucleic acids and protein. Some of the key topics that spurred development of the field have been the evolution of enzyme function, the use of nucleic acid divergence as a "molecular clock" to study species ...

  • DMT - The Spirit Molecule - Documentary Interviews - Part 1 of 5 Dr. Strassman's studies investigated the effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a powerful entheogen, or psychedelic, that he theorizes is produced by the human brain in the pineal gland. DMT is found naturally in various natural sources, and is closely related to human neurotransmitters such as serotonin and melatonin, which helped create the basis of this theory. During the project's five years, he administered approximately 400 doses of DMT to 60 human volunteers. This research took place at the University of New Mexico's School of Medicine in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was tenured Associate Professor of Psychiatry. Dr. Strassman has conjectured that when a person is approaching death, the pineal gland releases DMT, accounting for much of the imagery reported by survivors of near-death experiences. He wrote about the research program in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule, and a documentary movie based on this book is currently in production. Dr. Strassman has also conducted similar research using psilocybin, a psychedelic alkaloid found in hallucinogenic mushrooms.

  • NASA/ESA HUBBLE FINDS FIRST ORGANIC MOLECULE ON "EXTRASOLAR" PLANET 19 March 2008 The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has made the first detection ever of an organic molecule in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star. This breakthrough is an important step in eventually identifying signs of life on a planet outside our Solar System. Hubble found the tell-tale signature of methane in the atmosphere of the Jupiter-sized extrasolar planet HD 189733b. Under the right circumstances, methane can play a key role in prebiotic chemistry the chemical reactions considered necessary to form life as we know it. Although methane has been detected on most of the planets in our Solar System, this is the first time any organic molecule has been detected on a world orbiting another star. This discovery proves that Hubble and upcoming space missions, such as the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, can detect organic molecules on planets around other stars using spectroscopy, which splits light into its components to reveal the fingerprints of various chemicals. Extrasolar planet HD 189733b This is a crucial stepping stone to eventually characterising prebiotic molecules on planets where life could exist, said Mark Swain of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), USA, who led the team that made the discovery. Swain is lead author of a paper to be published in tomorrows issue of Nature. The discovery comes after extensive observations in May 2007 carried out with Hubbles Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). It also ...

  • IBM Scientists First to Image the Anatomy of a Molecule As reported in the August 28 issue of Science magazine, IBM Research Zurich scientists Leo Gross, Fabian Mohn, Nikolaj Moll and Gerhard Meyer, in collaboration with Peter Liljeroth of Utrecht University, used an AFM operated in an ultrahigh vacuum and at very low temperatures ( 268oC or 451oF) to image the chemical structure of individual pentacene molecules. With their AFM, the IBM scientists, for the first time ever, were able to look through the electron cloud and see the atomic backbone of an individual molecule. While not a direct technological comparison, this is reminiscent of X-rays that pass through soft tissue to enable clear images of bones.
  • DMT - The Spirit Molecule Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), also known as N,N-dimethyltryptamine, is a naturally-occurring tryptamine and potent psychedelic drug, found not only in many plants, but also in trace amounts in the human body where its natural function is undetermined. Structurally, it is ***ogous to the neurotransmitter serotonin and other psychedelic tryptamines such as 5-MeO-DMT and 4-HO-DMT. DMT is created in small amounts by the human body during normal metabolism by the enzyme tryptamine-N-methyltransferase. Many cultures, indigenous and modern, ingest DMT as a psychedelic in extracted or synthesized forms. Pure DMT at room temperature is a clear or white to yellowish-red crystalline solid. DMT was first chemically synthesized in 1931. Inhaled: If DMT is smoked, the maximal effects last for a short period of time (5 to 30 minutes, dose-dependent). The onset after inhalation is very fast (less than 45 seconds) and maximal effects are reached within about a minute. In the 1960s, some reportedly referred to DMT as "The businessman's trip" due to the relatively short duration of vaporized, insufflated, or injected DMT. Smoking DMT is extremely difficult due to the overwhelming harshness of the smoke produced. Many users cough the smoke thus wasting the drug vaporized. The taste and smell of the smoke is reminiscent of burning plastic or mothballs. Insufflation: When DMT is insufflated (snorted through the nostrils) the duration is markedly increased, and some users report diminished ...

  • DMT - The Spirit Molecule 2 Dr. Rick Strassman (born 1952 in Los Angeles, California, United States) is a medical doctor specialized in psychiatry with a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology research. Dr. Strassman was the first person in the United States after twenty years of intermission to embark in human research with psychedelic, hallucinogenic, or entheogenic substances. During the intermission period, research was restricted by law to animals studies only. Dr. Strassman's studies investigated the effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a powerful entheogen, or psychedelic, that he theorizes is produced by the human brain in the pineal gland. • Dr. Masaru Emoto's Water Molecule Experiments Dr. Masaru Emoto's Water Molecule Experiment Most people first heard of Dr. Emoto in 2004 when the hit movie What The Bleep Do We Know? was released. In the documentary-style film, Dr. Emoto's findings on the energy of thoughts are demonstrated. His central premise put forward is that human beings can affect the shape and molecular structure of water just through conscious intention. He demonstrates this in two ways: first by showing images of water molecules from the Fujiwara Dam, before and after they have been blessed by a monk. He then shows the impact of labeling bottles of distilled water with thoughts. Some bottles feature positive thoughts, while others feature negative ones. He then freezes contents from each bottle and photographs them at sub zero temperatures using a high powered microscopic camera. The resulting shape, color and structure of the water crystals shows marked variation. Water from bottles that were labeled with positive messages have intricate structures and shiny, diamond-like reflective qualities. Those that were labeled with negative thoughts have deformed, collapsed structures with black holes and yellow tinged edges.
