  • SEN. MIRIAM SANTIAGO: HUWAG NA TAYO MAG PA-EPAL DITO! JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED. Day 5 of impeachment trial: List down your witnesses now AFTER A week-long absence from the impeachment trial, Senator-judge Miriam Defensor Santiago erupted with a blistering scolding of her colleagues as well as lawyers for both defense and prosecution panels and demanded to know how many witnesses and documents they intend to present during the trial. Santiago said it was about time both parties made clear how many witnesses they intend to present, with a summary of the testimonies they will make. "Huwag na tayo pa-epal dito," (Let us not grandstand) Santiago said. "Justice delayed is justice denied." "Nawawalan na ng gana ang mga nanunuod. To shorten the proceedings, how many witnesses do you intend to present," Santiago asked the prosecution and defense counsels. Santiago said that to be fair to all concerned, "and to determine the length of the trial," the two parties should present in writing a list of witnesses they intend to present, a summary of their testimonies that they will present, and a list of documents to be submitted. Confronted by Santiago, lead prosecutor Niel Tupas asked for three days to come up with their list. Lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas in turn said they expect to present at least 15 witnesses to prove the innocence of Corona. Santiago said she wanted to correct the "misimpression" by many people, including her colleagues, that the impeachment was either political or judicial in nature. With respect to your footnote 1, you emailed me that a 91A request was "coming." While I volunteered that I would review the matter when the holiday weekend ended, and will do so, an email to me referencing a future request does not trigger obligations on the part of the City under the RSA. Eigh*** Black athletes represented the United States in the 1936 Olympics -- triple the number who had competed for the United States in the 1932 Los Angeles Games. African-Americans dominated the popular track and field events, and in the end, Black athletes brought home 14 medals, nearly one-fourth of the 56 medals awarded the US team in all events. Many American journalists hailed the victories of Jesse Owens and other Blacks as a blow to the *** myth of Aryan supremacy. However, the continuing social and economic discrimination the Black medalists faced upon returning home underscored the irony of their victory in racist Germany. • The Energy Independence Implications of the Auto Bailout Proposal (Part 2 of 2) The Energy Independence Implications of the Auto Bailout Proposal (Part 2 of 2) - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2007-09-20 - As Congress considers a multi-billion dollar program of loans to America's auto industry, many measures of success or failure exist for the industry and the government's attempts to help the automakers. Chief among those measures of success is how effectively America's auto industry, and the industry as a whole, is transformed to build cars for the future that reduce our dependence on oil. Will the auto industry meet the fuel economy rules passed by Congress and signed into law nearly a year ago, which could revitalize the industry? Should American taxpayers expect even higher fuel economy performance in return for their investment of additional billions in loans? Do the auto companies' plans impair their ability to meet the current fuel economy regime? A panel of auto industry and fuel economy experts will discuss these issues and other energy implications of the automotive industry loan program at a hearing tomorrow before Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Chairman Markey authored the House language that became the current fuel economy standards of at least 35 mile per gallon by 2020. • John Brennan CIA Confirmation Hearing Interrupted By Protesters DONT DRONE ME BRO John Brennan CIA Confirmation Hearing Interrupted By Protesters DONT DRONE ME BRO CIA Director-designate John Brennan strongly defended anti-terror attacks by unmanned drones Thursday under close questioning at a protest-disrupted confirmation hearing. On a second controversial topic, he said that after reading a classified intelligence report on harsh interrogation techniques, he does not know if waterboarding has yielded useful information. Despite what he called a public misimpression, Brennan told the Senate Intelligence Committee that drone strikes are used only against targets planning to carry out attacks against the United States, never as retribution for an earlier one. "Nothing could be further from the truth," he declared. Referring to one American citizen killed by a drone in Yemen in 2011, he said the man, Anwar al-Awlaki, had ties to at least three attacks planned or carried out on US soil. They included the Fort Hood, Texas, shooting that claimed 13 lives in 2009, a failed attempt to down a Detroit-bound airliner the same year and a thwarted plot to bomb cargo planes in 2010. "He was intimately involved in activities to kill innocent men women and children, mostly Americans," Brennan said. In a sign that the hearing had focused intense scrutiny on the drone program, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., told reporters after the hearing that she thinks it may be time to lift the secrecy off the program so that US officials can ...

  • Radley Balko on the 3 Worst Cases of Police Abuse in 2011 Due to the violence depicted and discussed in this video, viewer discretion is advised. The 1991 beating of Rodney King by the Los Angeles Police Department, which came to light after being caught on video by a citizen trying out a video camera, ushered in a new age of transparency and openness when it comes to law enforcement. Since then, sound and vision from any number of sources - including cell-phone cams and pocket recorders, not to mention footage shot by police themselves - have captured law enforcement in action in a wide range of circumstances. Sometimes, the footage exonerates the police and sometimes it incriminates them. Always, though, we as citizens gain from having a better sense of how law enforcement operates, even (or especially) when what we see is hugely disturbing. Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie talked with Reason columnist Radley Balko, proprietor of The Agitator and a long-time student of the increasing militarization of police. We asked Balko to talk about he thinks are the three most-schocking videos of police abuse that have come to light so far in 2011. Ironically, Balko notes that widespread video of police at work gives rise to the misimpression that such violent abuse is on the rise while police are almost certainly more respectful of civil liberties than they were 50 or 60 years ago. He argues that it's precisely because citizens and watchdogs (including many with the law enforcement community) have more tools at their disposal to ferret out ...

  • CNN American Morning Sells Out Cancer Survivor for Coal COAL IN YOUR STOCKING THIS CHRISTMAS: CNN CNN's report on coal ash was welcome attention from a national news outlet for the people near Little Blue Run. But the coverage left a mis-impression and was neither objective nor without bias as CNN often claims. The coal industry is one of CNN's sponsors, and their commercial airing during the report is tantamount to a rebuttal of the claims of the citizens harmed by the industry. Not only is the commercial inaccurate propaganda; the industry perspective is furthered by the reporting. Some of CNN's news report was wrong or uninformed. Opinion was given as fact, and worse, it was the opinion of the sponsor. It cannot be considered objective journalism to report on a story when one of the parties is supporting it financially. In fact, After the Press considers the very idea of objectivity to be false and misleading. After the Press does not claim to be objective and instead provides the views of Paul Joffe, whose opinions are clearly stated. Little Blue Run is a coal ash dump owned by First Energy. The company promised the residents back in the '70s that it would build a retention pond that they could use for boating and recreation -- just like the one shown in the Clean Coal commercial. At this time there is no operational Clean Coal technology. Coal contains small amounts of heavy metals like selenium, cadmium, arsenic, and lead. When coal is burned, whatever doesn't burn is left over, and it's called fly ash. Heavy metals don ...

Brennan for Brennan's evasive answers to tough questions about US anti-terror policy (transcripts follow, excerpts are in full beyond the soundbites played in the show, for full context). Radio excerpt enhanced with C-SPAN video. - A question from Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss (who represents Mike's home state Georgia) about interrogation techniques: In a November 2007 interview, you said that information from the interrogation techniques "saved lives." But you also said that the CIA should be out of the detention business. "The main benefit that I saw in CIA's program was the ability to hold and question individuals about whom there was significant intelligence that they were terrorists but not necessarily evidence that could be used in the court of law." Your view seems to be that even if we can save American lives by detaining more terrorists using only traditional techniques it would be better to kill them with a drone or let them go free rather than detain them. Can you explain the logic in that argument? John Brennan: I respectfully disagree, Senator. I never believed it's better to kill a terrorist than to detain him. We want to detain as many terrorists as possible so we can elicit the intelligence from them in the appropriate manner so that we can disrupt...terrorist attacks. So I'm a strong proponent of doing everything possible short of killing terrorists, bringing them ...
