Nokturnal Misanthropy - In the forest NOKTURNAL MISANTHROPY- ETERNA NOTTE Boasting a complex spiderwebbed twisted tree branch construction of a logo that looks like something from the virtually unreadable Waking The Cadaver school are mournful Italian duo Nokturnal Misanthropy who despite the name are not exactly the type of black metal one might immediately believe them to be. With their first release 'Eterna Notte' out on new label Naturemacht Productions from Germany the twosome who constitute Nokturnal Misanthropy dwell much more in realms of morose doom infected depressive BM than they do in up-tempo blasting blackness. Five songs form 'Eterna Notte' spanning it a couple of minutes over half an hour in complete length beginning with the darkened drone of 'Heaven and Hell'. A forlorn procession of keys starts this off and then intermittent drums, ominous chord fuzz and harsh vocal whispers make themselves known, these caustic voicings slipping in a sibilant style whilst cold atonal guitar swims behind. There are no great bursts of speed in occurrence here, this is a trudging stifling display of icy bleak atmosphere ruled by ponderous percussion and tomb like vocals that all too often sound faint and distant. Though crawling in terms of tempo 'Heaven and Hell' possesses a fair measure of frosty aloof atmosphere and has some nice sections of old school jarring chordal damage battling with the variety of vocal methods and keystroke vulnerability.
